A lot of people will disagree with me on these. Fortunately, I don't give a crap.

Resistance : Fall of Man. Any plot that follows such a logical procession up to what would be considered by many to be an impossible situation is a good game in my view.

Goldeneye : Rogue Agent. Say what you will, it still had a better plot than any of the Brosnan movies.

Hitman : Silent Assasin.

LOZ : Majora's Mask. I found the interweaving stories of each character and how they all reached a crescendo within these three days to be one of the best plots of the 5th generation of consoles. That and the subtle plot within a plot of Terminia's hubris and doom.

GOW, both I and II.

Story-wise, Halo (all of them), Jak (all of them), KH (all of them) and Bioshock. Oh, and FFX.

Nothing comes even remotely close to being worthy to comparison with Planescape: Torment in terms of writing and plot.
But I did enjoy the stories of FF VI, Arcanum and parts of Morrowind, Chrono Trigger and the Metal Gear Solid series.

EDIT: Deus Ex has a great story as well. And Vampire: Bloodlines was okay too. Too bad the game was bugged and generally annoying to play.

So true about Goldeneye: Rouge Agent,
The game it's self is bad but the plot is great.

I really don't agree on that, I genuinely did enjoy the game. I don't know why, I just liked it. I honestly accept any attempts to convince me why this game is bad, I enjoy a chance to gain the ability to see another perspective.

Like the attitude.
K, starts of GREAT, u in a helicopter with 007, awsome, then downhill.
Gun fights are slow, as it takes way to many shots to kill an enemy, and the 'goldeneye' is is more awarked then it is useful.
I love the plot, so many 007 villians in the same game, but i couldnt get past the gun fights (comparing them to Nightfire (which was awsome).
What did u think about 'Agent under fire'?

I agree on Majora's Mask, even though it was more gameplay oriented than Ocarina of Time. The villain was crazy and I love that. The subplots could be hard to follow though with the 3-day limit.

The first chapter of Radiant Dawn. That was entertaining, especially in the beginning.

1) Psychonauts

I mean, so many stories, so many character developments, the game really takes you there. Kudos to Tim Schafer for that.

Also, the twists and straight plotline are awesome, as well.

2) Legend of Dragoon

I mean, its not very original, but it does grab my attention, because every new piece of the story just fits in with another, leading to many large plot twists, a thrilling climax and a "Why didnt I think of that?" attitude.

Also, I love the concept of Winglies. I want to be one, shooting fireballs out of my hands, flying on wings of light, and controlling Virages. VIRAGES, I TELL YOU!

Ehh, the only one like that was the two lovers, and that to me was easily made up for with sight of them united, awaiting their death but with no remorse.

Silent Hill 2. Never had a bigger mind-fuck than while playing this game. And the Hitman series has a pretty darn good narrative too.

1) Starcraft and it's expansion
2) The original God of War
3) Bioshock

That's pretty much the cream of the crop to me.

It was still messy. Oh well, I'm just ranting. Move on and forget me (for now).

Biohock, if only because you actively had to hunt down the plot instead of it being spoon-fed to you.

Baldur's Gate, the original. I spent quite a while going "why the fuck are all these bounty hunters and assassins after me!?" while slowly uncovering a plot to throw the entire region into war. Much love.

But the master;
Planescape: Torment. The only game to be genuinely epic yet intensely personal. No saving the world, no supervillain with a deathray, just a guy trying to find out who he is.

I think FFX had an excellent plot in conception, but the implementation (voice-acting, charecterisation, appearances) just didn't pan out as awesome as it should have. At the riskof sounding emo (which I'm not, I'm way past that in terms of complex despair and cynicism) there should have been a little more heart-rending misery, arguments, infighting and general chaos. But sadly there wasn't, and the plot suffered.

On the other hand, another thumbs up to psychonauts, and okami. Most of the FF PS1 series had their moments, as does the metal gear series.

I liked Lylat Wars, although it was more for the character design than actual 'I WILL AVENGE YOU FATHER!' plot.

I didn't think the story in Psychonauts was that awesome. The villain was pretty obvious, and i hoped for a twist of some sort. I don't know, a doublecross or something. I loved psychonauts for the levels, the atmosphere and the humor, but not the story.

I thought the story in mgs2 was pretty awesome to begin with, but then i lost track in the conspiracy-fest that was the ending.

As for the greatest story?.. I don't really think a game has really caught me because of the story, it is allways more the universe and the characters that catch my eye. But if a have to mention one of the top of my head, it's got to be Dead rising!...

It's a standard zombieflick, but it's well executed and it kept me interested. Also nice to see some social commentary in a game really..

Hmm...I'd have to say Baten Kaitos Origins. It's not exactly every day you have a game where your party gets transported back in time at certain intervals, and while in the past, do all they can to help out the same people whose actions are responsible for the problems in their present. Seriously, how original is that?

I really can't go wrong with Metal Gear - the saga itself is mostly put together pretty well despite all the different games and it's one I always look forward to.

The original Ninja Gaiden was also pretty good, and the precursor, I think, for all of these "cinematic" games that have an ongoing story.

Final Fantasy Tactics, sometimes I felt like having PHDs in both political science and theology might have made the plot even MORE intriguing than it already was.

I have to say that i think that maybe

Oblivion

or

Resident evil (most of the resident evil line)

are fucking good plotlines and they make sence in a way!

I like FF4 (2 here in the states), Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver was pretty good (and even Defiance if you think about it); Mass Effect is great; Vagrant Story (gotta love that one): Hotel Dusk: Room 215; and last I would like to mention Gun (yeah that cowboy shooter game) I was really surprised on how good the plot in that game was (even the voice acting was top-noch).

The Half Life series as a whole. It started with the greatest of all games, Half Life. The story asked more questions than were answered and left you wondering who the G-Man is and who he works for. Many more questions were asked in Half Life 2 while some previous questions were answered if you just watched what was going on around everyone's favorite emotionally oblivious mute, Gordon Freeman. Half Life 2 Episodes one and two answered some of the questions left by the previous installments while upping the intrigue. No FPS has ever been able to nail the story side of a game like HL.
