Did it? I know it did on the bridge, but did it when it was struck by lightning due to Volgins hubris? |

I'm loathe to do this, because I hate it when people say things like "Use Google, duh!" but you might get more luck on Wikipedia or something like that. |

I tried that. Wikipedia has the problem of continuosly spoiling things about Sons of Liberty. I just want a look over what happened in the first three without telling me what happened in the 4th. |

The games go in this order Metal gear solid 3 snake eater A breif plot summary is is years later Snake (aka big boss) then goes renagade and hijacks a facility called 'outer heaven', Solid snake (from mgs + mgs2) is sent to destroy outer heaven and kill Big Boss. Years later 'Grey fox' (ninja guy) goes missing and big boss returns. Snake is sent to find grey fox and kill big boss. grey fox 'dies' during the rescue Years later (Metal gear solid) snake is sent to 'shadow mosses' to stop the launch o a nuke and kill Liquid (Clone of big Boss). Grey fox apperers and cuts of Occolets arm (Occolet's in MGS3 but doesnt impact the plot, other then meeting snake). Snake then kills liquid and escapes. MGS2 (Tanker) MGS2 (Plant) |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 4854 Joined: 30 Jan 2008 | Wait...That might explain something. So far, MGS2 deemed me unworthy to play the tanker part, and shoved me straight into the Plant. What the hell? |

yeah, thats understandable. |
Red Guard Posts: 1554 Joined: 21 Feb 2008 | This problem is that the plot of the Metal Gear Solid franchise is incredibly and in fact deliberately intricate, so any synopsis any of us try and do will invariably leave something out. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 4854 Joined: 30 Jan 2008 | So effectively the only way I'm going to understand this at a functioning level is to play the actual game? Where am I supposed to find a copy? |

There may be plot FAQs on gamefaqs. If you do search around you may even find some relevant information on video sites as well. I don't think you have to play the game really, you just have to just understand it enough to get the backstory. In addition, I seem to recall that MGS2 had something in the options that showed you what happened in MGS or at least tried to tell you via walls of text. There's always the punchy yet, entertaining Thumbnail Theatre on Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 (you have to scroll down to see it). |

The first three MGS games were recently rereleased as MGS: The Essential Collection. It should be easy to find since it was released back in March. Every time I go to my local Gamestop, I see various copies of it. |

Just to clarify, Naked Snake kills The Boss, he's then given the title Big Boss, the first person to be given the rank. However, he doesn't like the title as he doesn't think he's surpased the Boss in anyway. Also, not sure if anyone has mentioned this but Big Boss is who Snake, Liquid and Solidus are cloned from, as he was considered to be the perfect solider. |
Beat Writer Posts: 159 Joined: 2 Apr 2008 | Here is my attempt at a summary of the events of Metal Gear Solid: Solid Snake (hereafter just "Snake") has been re-recruited after a long retirement due to the Special Forces unit FOXHOUND going rogue and taking over Shadow Moses - a nuclear storage and disposal facility. The FOXHOUND group comprises Revolver Ocelot (whom you may or may not know by now - he is a gunfighter and torturer), Decoy Octopus (master of disguise), Vulcan Raven (giant and shaman), Psycho Mantis (so powerful, he can read your memory cards! Ph33r him!), Sniper Wolf and Liquid Snake (hereafter "Liquid"). Snake infiltrates Shadow Moses. He is sent to rescue two hostages, both of which die in suspicious circumstances. Along the way, he encounters "The Ninja", and The Colonel's niece, Meryl. Snake proceeds to bump off the various members of Foxhound. He locates and rescues Hal Emmerich (Otacon), who helps him on the way. During all of this, Snake learns that Shadow Moses contained a secret military weapon; Metal Gear REX. REX is capable of firing "missiles" via a railgun mounted on its back. As there are not actually missiles, just nuclear railgun slugs, they cannot be detected by conventional anti-missile defence systems. Following a fight in a computer lab, the Ninja is revealed to be none other than Grey Fox; an old friend of Snake who was in the old FOXHOUND unit. Grey Fox was supposedly killed in Metal Gear 2, but has survived and is now hunting Snake down - only by killing Snake, or dying in the process, will he find peace. For your benefit, we will now skip several hours of unimportant bits and cut to the good stuff. Liquid activates Metal Gear REX and tries to kill Snake. He is ultimately defeated with the help of Grey Fox, who dies saving Snake. Liquid kicks off into the "Emo Rant", whereby he cries about how Mommy didn't love him and Snake got all the best toys, clothes and genetic data from the lab they were born in. Yes, they were born in a lab. Liquid is the clone-brother of Snake, both of which being created from the genetic material of Big Boss (you may have worked that out already, what with Naked Snake and Old Snake looking identical and all). It is also revealed that Snake is infected with "FOXDIE", a synthetic virus designed to kill off all of FOXHOUND, and Snake along with it. This Virus is what killed Decoy Octopus (posing as the DARPA Chief - the first hostage who was killed during torture by Ocelot), and the second Hostage, Kenneth Baker. More fighting follows, and Snake escapes with his life (along with Otacon and Meryl, as MGS4 has both of them in it). Liquid is slain by the FOXDIE virus. The end of the game reveals that Ocelot survived, and was working for the President. There was also a third "Son of Big Boss", known as Solidus Snake. If it hasn't happened already, he will be explained in MGS2. I have played MGS 1, 2 and 3. I have played them in order. I have played them so many times I've managed to unlock MGS1's tuxedo outfit (with Grey Fox in ugly-Red), just about every secret in MGS2, and get every camo in MGS3. I STILL have no &*£$?%! clue what the hell all that "La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo" bollocks is about. If you want to enjoy MGS2, I strongly suggest you ignore everything every character says or does. Mind you, if you do that the game's only an hour long, so it's your call. |

The La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo is an example of the Patriots censorship. All of the characters with Nanos were actually forbidden from actually saying the word Patriots, and the phrase was automatically scrambled - sort of a measure to prevent their secret from emerging. The President got away from it cause they were housed in a lead-lined bunker - his actions were not controlled. User was banned for: The league/association /brotherhood of Trollslayers. I'm psyched about Metal Gear Solid 4. However, I'm having a bit of trouble working it out. I'll need some people who have played them in order, well, in order to understand it. I've played all of 3, and I think I worked it out relatively well. The Boss trained Big Boss, then went on a final mission, which went pear shaped when the sadistic electrified wackjob revealed that (shock horror) he was actually a prick (Seriously, what did she think a man like that would do when given a nuke? Its her own damn fault). And there was a Tank that violated half of the laws of Physics, and a drunk Russian who invented the Metal Gears but no-one liked the ideas. This robs the game of its poignancy, but you get the idea.
However, I'm playing through MGS2 for the first time, and all I've worked out is that everyone thinks Raiden is a chick, that Otacon is an incestuous perv, and Rose is batshit crazy (What the fuck, man? "Your room is empty, like your soul!") Having had no briefing on Les Enfantes Terribles, Shadow Moses, or Metal Gear Rex, half the plot is sailing over me.
Is there anyone who can give me a clear, concise rundown of the events that transpired in Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2 and Metal Gear Solid?
