Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 730 Joined: 9 Jan 2008 | First thoughts on the game? Hmm... well. I really enjoyed the game, even though for the most part it looked black and white; But irrespective of this fact the graphics were actually pretty astounding. The textures on the walls and the illusion of bump mapping, sometimes real bumpmapping, the figures and the skin. The game really presents itself well. Like the graphics I feel the gameplay aspect failed to disapoint it was very well thought out, being able to perform rolls whilst in a prone position, the cqc, the gunplay. It was all really well done. Althought some times it would just not do as you asked it to, for example; what used to be no trouble at all in the older games, pressing up against walls, is now an ardous task in this one. So is shooting from cover. you would just throw yourself out into enemy fire instead of clinging on to the wall for what little hope there is left. That got annoying but I managed to soon perfect the way of doing it. The story (which I will not elaborate on) was amazing. If you've been with the Metal Gear series from the beginning like I, then you will not be disapointed. All ends are strung together. One thing you may have to do though, like me, you may have to pause the game to work it out every now and again. For those who have not been with the MG series from the beginning may find a lot of names floating around that you can not pull to people or visa versa. Not only that but the story is so cluster fucked that you would have to either play or read about the previous games to get a slight grip to not fall into the spike ridden sea of fuckery. But that would be from your view, I like the fuckery of the story, the complexity is a wonderful addition to my faviorate game series. Another thing, the characters backgrounds really make you feel for them, but again, that is if you know of their backgrounds from the other games. Christ. If you want to enjoy this game, buy the others. Otherwise your just going to trip and fall perhaps even pushed into a pit of confusion where the walls either side of you are a mixture of ketchup and toffie. PS. I really don't know why people keep complaining about the long cutscenes. Have you ever played a Metal Gear Solid game before?! EVER?! (insert spoiler here for comical effect -->* *) |
Muckraker Posts: 284 Joined: 17 Oct 2007 | Ok so both IGN and Gamespot gave it 10/10. Likewise with GTA. Twice in a year? That's unheard of. Then again, Gamespot is a cesspool. But still. Hmmm. . . |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 730 Joined: 9 Jan 2008 | I agree, both games have at least 3 or 4 flaws that can not be redeemed by other traits. So why give a 10? Money? |
Anonymous Source Posts: 3 Joined: 22 May 2008 | GTA definitely didn't deserve it's 10/10, I reckon they got paid for that one, but seriously, MGS4 is worth 10/10, I completed it earlier today and I wont give away any spoilers, but i've got to say, it's storyline for me, and the storyline is absolutely incredible, the shooting and stuff works really well and all the enemies are well designed and balanced nicely towards kicking your arse, to my mind mgs4 has no flaws, apart from slow aiming but thats a problem with all console shooters so i'll forgive it that. |
Muckraker Posts: 284 Joined: 17 Oct 2007 | Yea GTA gets like. . . idk an 8.5 for me? I mean. . . it's AWESOME, but some missions are "meh" and dates are annoying. Pity i never played a metal gear game besides substinance for the Xbox, which was good, albeit the most pretentious game i've ever played, i half expect Hogima to wear a lapel and smoke a pipe while shooing away homeless people with a newspaper. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2234 Joined: 10 Mar 2008 | Well, with IGN, they listed many flaws with GTA4 but still gave it a 10/10 which really annoyed me. But in the review on MGS4, they didn't list any flaws at all (or atleast the ones i read). Big difference there, and MGS4 does deserve a 10/10 IMO. As for what i think of MGS4; it's fucking amazing. Simple as that. Now, keep in mind that i have NEVER played a single MGS game, let alone an MG one. The story is absolutely incredible, and the cutscenes keep you interested no matter what. Seriously, the only time you realize (or atleast me) that the cutscenes are extremely long or that you haven't shot something yet is when the annoying codec beeping comes into place. It's challenging, even on the Naked Normal i'm playing on. I honestly can't think of that much flaws in this game, it's just awesome. |

Muckraker Posts: 230 Joined: 17 May 2007 | Just to offer a counterpoint in the GTA-MGS debate: I think GTAIV is an astoundingly "complete" game, whereas MGS4 sounds like a very "special-interest" game. They're both great at what they do, but surely you have to take the breadth of a game's appeal into account when reviewing it? MGS games are obtuse. For a lot of people (most people, I think) the extended cutscenes and awkward dialogue are boring, while for others they're manna from heaven. I think even its most fervent supporters would agree that MGS games are divisive - they're not for everyone. And I think review scores should reflect that. Certainly the reviews themselves should. A game that's perfect for two people and dull for everyone else shouldn't get a 10/10, so why should a game that's awesome for a lot of people and frustrating for a lot of others not get knocked back to a 9 at least? On the other hand, IMO, GTAIV is a game with broad appeal. Since every aspect of the game is so polished, that sandbox choice of where to go next, while still having a clear path to follow, should make it inclusive enough to host a lot of fun for nearly anyone. Even stealth lovers - ever tried killing as many cops as possible without getting a star? Maybe it's just perfect for me, like MGSIV is to other people, but I haven't met anyone who honestly disliked GTAIV outside of MGS4 forum threads. *shrug* (The one criticism I keep hearing about GTAIV is that you're always doing the same few missions: shoot dudes, chase cars, be a taxi. But I don't get why that's a problem, because it's the core gameplay element. It's like complaining that Halo has too much shooting or Super Mario has too much jumping. But hey, maybe I'll find it gets old eventually.) |

I bet that at least 30% of the people who buy this game will never have even played an MGS game, including me. I understand most of your points, but i think that the reason everyone is angry about GTA getting straight 10s is that they listed several flaws such as "Not that good aiming","Cover system flawed","Missions repetitive", and i think a couple more, but they said those flaws were even noticable at times but they still gave it a 10/10 despite all those flaws. Apparantly i'm one of those people who thinks GTA4 didn't diserve all of those 10s because the game does get repetitive for me, and usually only good for short bursts. I can perfectly understand a 9.9 from IGN UK (though i'm slightly irritated) hell, if pushed i could accept the 9.5 from IGN AU (which listed 1 positive point out of every 5 negative points, go ahead read the review) but most people will not accept 10/10s if the reviewers list serveral flaws in a game of which they did not with MGS4. And, i don't think you could "stealth kill" a cop, you could either get a headshot or get out of the circle but I don't know anyway to kill a cop and not get one, please elaborate on that. |

If you think about it for a while, you will find some flaws in the game. Baring in mind this is coming from an MGS fanatic who knows the story inside out and has helped a fair share of confused MGS fans on the web understand it. There are some parts of the story that are just plane, well, ridiculous. The new control scheme takes a while to get used to and is quite complex, but once you have the hang, it is possibly the best scheme ever. The way Raiden had to fight nearing the end made me laugh more than anything the MGS series has ever done; And it all proves my theory that Hideo is a Crazy genius. |

Yes, the control scheme was pretty complex at first because i was so used to L3 being the crouch button and Square for being reload, but i got used to it. It's more of a personal preference though. But please elaborate on the flaws you encountered, not to be a bitch, but because maybe i could relate or it would be one of those moments when my friend list the strengths and weaknesses of every Brawl character. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 730 Joined: 9 Jan 2008 | FUCK THE QUOTE BUTTON Well a lot of the flaws are in plot. I guess I could send you the flaws I found in personal message. But the other ones are things like the AI of the gekkos. You are constantly fly kicked by them, no matter what happens. It takes down you health drastically and because of rag doll you can't get away quick enough. You end up being fly kicked again, this repeats until death. |
Beat Writer Posts: 215 Joined: 6 Dec 2007 | I'm certainly going to put up one of my minimally skilled reviews at some point after I finish the game. It was a good exercise to post a Metal Gear Solid retrospective review before the release this week because it made me think of what I liked and didn't like about the previous games, to see if there were improvements. Exposition is still heavy, but it's meaningful. What's better is the way they have codec convos and mission briefings set up makes all the talk a lot more meaningful and more engaging. The control improvements are a real blessing, although I still find aiming to be a challenge. The pacing is good and the places you go are really varied. On the new features front, the weapon system alone is probably my favorite addition to the game. I'm one of those schmucks who bought a PS3 bundle, as I was waiting for a game worth spending my cash on, and so far, this is it. I'm at Act 3 right now. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2234 Joined: 10 Mar 2008 | Yeah, just PM them to me. But can someone tell me how to "stealth kill" a cop? Also, if anyone is on MG:Online yet PM your ID to me :3 mine's obviously "Jumplion" |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1759 Joined: 7 Feb 2008 | As much as I enjoy the game I must say somethings against it... 1) Kojima should stop writing games himself. His dialogue varies from heavy handed, to dramatic, to explcative and boring to downright hammy. These may just be translation issues and if that is the case someones localization team NEEDS to be fired. 2) Explication. An important rule in storytelling is show don't tell, and MGS4 LOVES to tell rather than show, giving us lengthy sequences of characters explaining the various confusing aspects of the plot. Why not leave some of that in the background as a tantalizing but ambiguous mystery? 3) The Moustache. Snakes child-molestor moustache was a mistake, pure and simple, it looks terrible! 4) The Act 3 Mission. The most frustrating moment of gameplay I have ever experienced, the ending of the act makes up for it, but the earlier part of the act had me almost throwing my controller across the room. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 2171 Joined: 20 Dec 2007 | I know why they gave MGS4 a 10. You can't give the game a "score" - reviewing this game is by far the toughest game to review, simply telling people what is on the title screen is a huge spoiler, and telling them why it's worth a 10, is a spoiler, and not only that, but MGS always combined "Last-Gen" with "Next-Gen" and used it effectively. Example: Snake's deep pockets, and invisible backpack, in which he carries an arsenal that would wipe out the Taliban, and then sneak away in his Rusty drum-can, all of which, seemed to be pulled out of his ass. Yet, who decides if this is a strength or a flaw? It's used effectively right? You still have those ID locks, still gotta get "drebin points" - it's not like the game is unfair, even on "Big Boss Hard" (why the hell are these new difficulty names so bloody stupid and unintentionally sexual? Stick with the old "extreme" or "masochistic" - not this cheesy crap.) Also, cutscenes in the game don't drag on for too long, the mission briefings may go on for a while, but they aren't boring at all, yet, some people despise cutscenes, how are we going to say "this is a strength, +1 point" - or the opposite? I think they gave this a 10, to get people's attention, to say, "this is something EVERYONE should play at least 4 times". and then there is the whole "they were paid off" thing but whatever, it's not like you can give this less than an 8. Anything less, chances are, you just don't like "action games" - you can say "I don't like Stealth Games" - but this one is able to be played both ways, you should have just thought outside the box. Are you talking about when meryl married that dude that looks like young snake at the end? Or when Eva dies from the Fox die? Or when Raiden has a baby with rose? Or when Snake fails at commiting suicide? Or when Big Boss dies from the fox die after talking to snake after snake fails to commit suicide? Or when you find out that everyone from Fox unit in metal gear 3 are the founders of the patriots? |

Games shouldnt be rated in accordance to how big their market appeal is. They should be rated on quality and quality alone. |
Press Junketeer Posts: 359 Joined: 21 Nov 2007 | Is anyone else finding it a lot easier than the other games? I'm playing on normal (Solid Normal I think) and it's no where near as hard as the other games. I recently re-played MGS3 on normal and that took me ages, even though I'd completed it five times previously. I haven't really been stuck anywhere. Maybe it's just the fact that I can now control the camera, that and the fact that I can buy any weapon I want at anytime. |

WTF?! Dud |
So I went out and picked up my nice shiny copy of MGS4 earlier hoping it wouldn't be another haze type of failure and im happy to say in my opinion it isent the only reason i am not playing it now is because my eyes hurt and I am downloading MGS online update (witch is taking its sweet time just like the demo)
For me so far no real compliant the graphics look just as they should for a next gen game (even better if I had a HD tv)The first few gadget less gun less minutes had me worried but the game soon picked up pace and I got all the stuff you would expect an expert in espionage to have. The cut scenes long but somewhat interesting (and skip-able)and the shooting not perfect but not too bad.
So has any one else got it yet and how are you finding it?
