In a lot of mainstream shooters, you're a one-man army, set to destroy the entire enemy race, using only nail clippers. The premise seems like it'll be impossible, but the nail clippers are nuclear bombs, the enemies are stoopid, and you're wearing indestructable armor. This is the case in a lot of games. But some games actually provide a challenge. There are situations, where you, and only you, literally have to take on a huge amount of your enemy alone. For instance:

In the game Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction, a game I've been often been frequenting, I am set to face one man. To subdue him, and transport him to a helicopter. Or simply kill him, but I've been trying to complete the game on a perfect run, i.e. capturing everyone. But here's the thing: He's holed up in a mountain fortress with tons of Tanks, AA Guns and Artillery Cannons. You're a private mercenary, employed to capture/kill 52 people, I won't get into the details now, and most of the time, they aren't insanely fortified. Unfortunately, he is in this case. I can hijack the enemy's helicopters, but every time I do, there are around four AA guns surrounding me, and sure, I can commandeer a tank, and kill some soldiers/other tanks, but once I've killed 1/2 other tanks, the enemy detects I'm there, and about two dozen tanks, four helicopters and any number of soldiers are ready to annhialate me. So, that's my story. After I'm finished posting, I'm gonna take an enemy jeep and run guns a' blazin' into the enemy's lines. So, tell me what your 'impossible' gaming situations are. /post

Diving headlong into the Ravenholm Headcrab cave and slaughtering every single one of the suckers without such as a scratch. Admittedly thought, I use "host_timescale 0.1"
But it was fun anyways. And Ravenholm for me is always the most intense level, because I tend to sprint all the way through it to avoid them fast ones and miss the poison zombies. And the snipers are easy to dodge if you keep moving.image

I'm going old school. Wing Commander 2, last mission.

Me vs. 2 squadrons of fighters as a warm-up, a squadron of cloaking ships, the entire ROYAL GUARD of Prince Thrakath, Prince.......wait for it...Thrakath, and then if you survive all that, successfully flying through the flak cannons of a giant space station 3 times to drop torpedoes.

I wanted a freaking medal after I finally did it.

Megaman games, typically in the 2nd to last stage there is a point where you choose right you live, choose wrong you die, a horrible, painful death.

That doesn't require any skill though. You're given an ultimatum, but even a baby could sucessfully choose right/wrong. I doubt he could run in, blow up FOUR AA cannons, call an air strike by standing in one place for ten seconds, and call in an Evac while keeping yourself and your trainsport copter from being blown up.

Rock Band. Hear me out! Green Grass and High Tides on medium. FUCKING MEDIUM! theres a horrible red-yellow-kick pedal beat and it starts halfway through and goes on for about 30% of the song. Bear in mind the song is something like 20 minutes long, and i am left wondering how the real drummer ever did it! seriously! did they have caffeine fed into their arm! what?!

Disgaea. "Hmm, How can we infuriate gamers with our game?" "I know! After every chapter, jump the enemy level up to way above the players party levels so that to actually win anything with more than one guy left, you have to go through the insanely repetitive dungeons for over thirty hours, and then raise the levels again to create a horrable, unending circle for the entire time!" "Great idea Saki, you get a raise!" Screw you Saki, screw you.

Pretty much Colony Wars.

One paricularly fine mission had you defending a refinery from wave after wave after wave of fighters. At the same time as trying to slow or halt the advance of an enormous mech capable of destroying the refinery in a single strike.
The Mech having no obvious weak points, being all but invulnerable to your standard weapons fire and ignoring you to focus on it's primary target.

In fact, both Vengeance AND Red Sun had missions like that.

Or defending yourself from enemy fighters that outperform you in every aspect. Only for a cruiser to come along and join in pelting at you.
Or just about every other mission in the whole series.

A game series designed wth controller snapping frustration in mind.

How about console to PC ports with one save and automatic save points? You're down to 3% health, surrounded by enemies, and fighting desperately - then you hit the save point. Now your only saved game starts you out with 3% health and surrounded by enemies, and your only out is to restart the level. Thanks guys! Forcing me to replay the same 45 minute section really adds to the game's value. Really. I'm not being sarcastic.

COD 4 in the TV Station on Veteran for me at least. I'm not the best at FPS's to begin with, but no matter which path I took I was slaughtered. I ran to the room all the way down on the right, but I could only throw back so many grenades before I was blown up or picked off. Then i'd try the room on the south wall just before the one all the way to the right, but that was worse then before. Then i'd try to stay in the main area with the desks, and that proved successful until i was picked off every third time by the men on the balcony, and if I focused on them i was hit by those on the floor. Lastly I did the unthinkable and rushed through the offices. It eventually worked despite it being the tactic everyone says DON'T do, but I cleared the first set of offices and held up there whilst killing those on the floor, and sniping those on the balcony as I saw them. Eventually (about an hour or so of doing this) the numbers waned down enough and I was able to press on.

KH2, the part where you fight literally 1000 heartless. I know you're flying through the air and whatnot, but still... 1000?!

All you need is patience. If you simply wait for the enemy to come to you they eventually will. Then you can peek out and snipe the rest one at a time.

The final skydive mission on Veteran makes me cry. The closest I got to completing it was when I actually got through to the hostage in time, only to shoot the hostage in the head myself. I literally dropped the controller and just stared at the screen for 10 minutes in disbelief.

Disgea is a turn based tactical strategy game...how can you get out leveled...don't you know that in order to ensure victory you MUST spend the time to be 10+ levels higher than any encounter, and if you find one that is less than ten levels below you, you need to gain 20 levels to avoid it happening (these are Disgea levels so gaining 20 is no big deal)

ugh lets see..... The Level in COD4 where its a flashback on to how that dude loses his arm (sorry my mind is TOTALLY drawing blanks). yeah, try picking up your crippled friend, protect him from like litterally HUNDREDS of troops, with two claymores, and about 200 shots of a gun. on the hardest level!. and then, run all the way back to your friend, pick him up, and carry him to the chopper with Russians still shooting you!

i hate that level....

various bits of Halflife 2... probably the final battle in Ep. 2 was my most frustrating, no matter how stupidly fast I drove, I always got there _just_ as the building got knocked over... Never have I been so bloody relieved to hear the words "I think it's over"

Really? What difficulty were you playing on because I've always thought Half-life 2 was one of the easiest FPSs around. Although I did struggle with that final bit in Episode 2 on Hard.

Oh God, *that* mission. I remember playing that level for the first time and getting completely owned twenty seconds in.

Well I don't think you get much harder than Ninja Gaiden: Black. I am going with the final boss run on that, try it on hard. Wow. I tried close to 50 times but couldn't get past the final guy as I was always out of health.

Yes, that is true, but I would like to spend that time advancing the story, not grinding Etna From level 1 to 30 for eight hours!

Impossible situations....hmmm...no I can't think of any most games are pretty realistic...

do you think that "Mr. Rowland" (it's been such a long tiiime!) really sees 3 little squares pop up in the upper left corner of his vision everytime he throws a knife at someones face?

The Merchant in Resident Evil 4. He gave me the Punisher, which I immediately sold back to him. Would anyone in real life do that?

I'm just gonna say that Veteran is a pain... it took me 2 days to get Mile High Club on Veteran! Though, I've finished all of the game on Veteran now.

For the KH2 battle, the 100 heartless thing was a bloody joke. All you had to do was hammer the triangle button.

As for my 'impossible moment', it was trying to get 'zombie chopper' (playing throughout Ravenholm only using the Gravity Gun). It was hard, but do-able, until I got to the bit where I had to wait for the pulley to escort you to Father Gregori. Thing was, I didn't have anything to kill the zombies with, so I had to run around in a circle attempting to dodge the fast zombies... ugh, that was such a pain. I think it was all luck...

TV station on COD4 is a ball ache until you realise that you can spam your 3 nades into where they are going to come from and then rush past the bodies to stop more spawning.

On one shot one kill, you can leave Price to do whatever he wants and go and hide behind the building furthest away from him.

Sephiroth in KH1 .. I don't remember even laying in a hit before he killed me in one shot. KH2 Sephiroth I faced on Proud Mode and tried .. no joke, close to 30 times to kill him (these were mostly short tries, mind you, because I would screw up somewhere and he'd make me pay for it) I DID manage to beat KH2 Sephiroth, though. Had to get Sora up to level 90 though and max out most of my drive forms.

Um .. the ultimate boss at the top of Pork City in the Another Day chapter of TWEWY on Hard or Ultimate. Just ... gah. GAH.

C + C Generals, this Chinese mission on the hardest level where you have to take a town and the GLA are just constantly sending wave after wave at you, never relenting, and then just when you've got on your feet, Scud Storm! Then more waves. Then you have no resources.

I concur with the last part of Half Life 2.

For me, though? Metal Gear Solid's torture sequence. The original one, for the PSX. You can just submit any time, but for the love of god, it is the only thing that deterimines whether you get the good ending, and I *cannot* mash buttons fast enough to win. I hate button mashing sequences, and to this day, I still can't beat it.

It's not impossible, since I completed it, but one of the toughest missions I've faced was in Great Battles of WWII: Stalingrad, there's a mission called Collective Farm where you must defend a small farm and village that you captured in the preceding mission from an onslaught of German tanks and infantry. The amount of carnage is insane, obviously it's an incredibly fun mission for the same reasons.

Here's a screenshot I took of a small area of the level:

Anyone attempting to get a 3 star rating on Mario Kart DS/Wii, I tell ya its bloody impossible! You have to make every boost, take every corner perfectly and go through every race hoping that the AI doesnt pummel you with red/blue shells, lightning strikes, which are inevitable.
