Whats with the PSN ad in the middle? |

Yep. First off - a lot of men on Xbox Live (relax, I'm a dude[and straight]) are d1ckw@ds, but you just have to accept that fact. Microsoft's core demographic is more of a "casual" gamer. But, in there own realm, they've turned hardcore. A lot of hardcore gamers have trouble dealing with a new person, who is, may I say, inexperienced. They call you a n00b and try and get you to go away. Now, I am aware of the irony of including Shatnershaman's post about stereotyping, while it may seem like I am myself. Log on to any MMO (especially World of Warcraft) and the second you ask for any advice, a level 70 will call you a n00b. Soooo, back to that Xbox Live thing...if you find those people annoying, then just don't converse with them. Find a group of friends who aren't crazy, and just play with them. Also, if they're hitting on you, complain to Microsoft. One more thing...girl gamers aren't a 'rarity,' but there are sure as heck a bunch more guy gamers then there are gal. I'm not being stereotypical or sexist, it's a STATISTIC. Until females/shemales (ha!) can be widely accepted by the male community, they will still be partially ostracised. And holy crap you're a bisexual!? Sorry, I just had to get that out. |
Paperboy Posts: 47 Joined: 25 Jan 2008 | Gee, there seems to be a bit of young-gamer hate flowing around this forum... And that makes me the saddings! Anyway, onto the subject... I have played with about... five or six girls in my time on Xbox live (at least, that nmany have had their microphones on), and in EVERY SINGLE SITUATION, the majority of male players would all start their obvious, predictable, and most of all, pathetic sexist remarks. Yes, I know, it is sad, but it is (probably) inescapable on practically any gaming platform. I guess we young gamers suffer the same sort of persecution, but probably to a lesser extent... Oh well... |

The fact that you have multiple consoles and talk to people online doesn't make you an objective expert on the subject at hand, but it does explain how you've reached the mindset you have now All that will sprout in this thread now is 1. you saying that you've had bad experiences, and 2. other people saying it's not true. Or at least, that's my opinion :p |
Paperboy Posts: 11 Joined: 20 Jun 2008 | Not really sure who you (AlisonPrime) mean when you say "you" in your posts. Im assuming you mean men? or Xbox Live people? Also, your Deviant art link says your a manager of a Gamestop. Why not just go to your own and avoid those "idiots"? Im easily confused... PS: First post, and love the escapist community. One of the rare places that is moderated well and people post intelligently. |

I like how the percentage of Males on an online service fitting into the subjective opinion of them being a "d1ckw@d" is FACT. |

As i said, i was on my way home from a doctors apointment, and to get to my gamestop, i'd have to go 5 miles out of my way to get there, and 5 miles to get back on the road home, and there was a gamestop on my way home from the doctor, the gamestop was in lake in the hills so i went there, it was to avoid wasting gas which i ended up doing anyway out of spite |

ok i was actually going to say something nice and possibly supportive, however that's changed sure ppl can be douchebags, EVERYONE can, including women complaining about how they are treated. see the pendulum swings both ways, they can be wankers and so can you. and frankly for all the gay ppl i do happen to know, they don't sit there and go "oh i'm bisexual but i might go 100% gay", they say those ppl are saying that for attention now also to bring up another point have you noticed how everyone treats each other one live and not just the women? cause they treat both just as bad, they insult guys as well as women, so that's a twisted version of equality. so really, yes being called whatever sux but if they're calling both sides that, how can they really be targeting one side? you also have the option of insulting them right back too, it is a two way street sadly most ppl don't understand equality, they think it means treating one side better than the other. there was a black equal rights person, sorry i forget his name, he actually thought Dr King was wrong, he didn't want civil rights he wanted the same rights, he actually named his daughter Miss, so you had no choice but to call her Miss. this actually applies to anyone |
Copy Clerk Posts: 82 Joined: 11 May 2008 | The overwhelming majority of girls I know play video games. An even(ish) play P.C as play console games. Problem is, none of them are "gamers". They never go online, they don't consider themselves "gamers" and they don't like to play with the guys because we get too competitive (apparently). I think that's the real problem. It's not that girls don't play games, it's that they don't want to play them surrounded by idiots. |
Paperboy Posts: 11 Joined: 20 Jun 2008 | I supose my message is, as others has posted. That while sometimes life is inconvient, there are steps you can take to avoid "idiots". Sometimes taking the easy route home (in your case literally) means you run into people you dont want to. As far as sexism online, I see it both ways. There are and always will be idiots online, and not everywhere is as well managed as the Escapist forums. So I can understand your need to post this thread and why you posted it here. But on the other hand I can see there are steps you can personaly take (and most users to do, men and women) to avoid idiots and to play your game, how you want, in peace. Even if its to move to PSN as you have. That aside I feel some of your posts are a bit aggressive and are looking for light sympathy. To be brutally honest. I know it may seem Im trolling (esp with my low post count), what your facing online IS real and is a problem. But Im not sure how posting here will help change that. |

It's a bit of a conundrum. On the one hand, the women of Gamerchix feel secure knowing that there's a safe environment for them (and their daughters) to play in, and that in turn encourages them to keep playing. On the other hand, by cordoning themselves off from the main community, they are perpetuating the very divisions that make them feel uncomfortable in the first place. |

On average, I believe you are actively complaining about the maturity of individuals that are likely 5-10 years your senior with whom you are playing against. This is to be expected. If you were to go into a local youth-hangout and begin trying to interact with those teenagers on their level, you would likely be ostracized in a different but equally poignant way. As you repeatedly cite MGSO, you are likely dealing with an older demographic, and thus have encountered 'more mature' individuals and a friendlier environment. I hardly claim this to be the definitive synopsis of your life experiences, but I would be willing to place money on it being fairly accurate.
It is regrettable that your experience is often the motivating factor driving so many women in our society into the arms of other women, all due to a few bad apples in the mix. It tends to make things damn difficult for us normal fellows when half of the 'interesting' women we encounter via online activity DO turn out to be 'off limits'. While I respect and sympathize with the prior conditions that have schooled you to think as you do regarding the majority of men, I believe you are failing to register what is likely the larger community of adult male gamers (Outside of 'jockish' college boys that play Halo 3 because it is 'boss'), that being we social introverts (mostly DUE to gaming) that could just use a good snuggle.
From your descriptions of your current life partner, work, driving, etc etc I can surmise you are at least over the age of 18, and thus, should have a fair amount of wisdom about you. I can understand the need to vent one's feelings on a forum where you believe they might be cared for, and the haste in which words may be written when one is agitated. However, it would seem that from the above quote, you are now fishing for attention. Your comments regarding turning away from men forever unless we shape up is rather trite. If you care for your opinions to be taken seriously, I would suggest avoiding such commentary in the future. As an aside, while you have a splendid figure and I would happily take you to my bed and make you breakfast the morning after, the other picture on your site is so much more respectful of yourself and much more demure. You do not need to grab your chest for a forum to gain attention. :D |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 623 Joined: 8 May 2008 | I think the big picture here, that has nothing to do with you being a woman, or Live , or guys is that THERE. ARE. IDIOTS. Like I've said Live is how it is, you have to accept it, no amount of whining or complaining is going to change how Live is. Either accept it, or don't play it, it's a simple solution, sometimes the simplest solutions are the easiest though people(myself included sometimes)like to overcomplicate things when the answer is staring you in the face, no scratch that, the answer is clawing your fucking eyeballs out yet you're oblivious to it. In closing accept it. If you can stand your ground against a Gamestop employee then i'm here holding my head in my heads asking myself why you never thought to just ignore people on Live. |

1. I'm sick of pointing out stereotypes. |

2. I never claimed anything was wrong with the game, nor playing a game that you enjoy. 1. Stereotypes exist for a reason: for a large sampling of cases, they tend to be the most common result. Should you find yourself in a demographic that is normally stereotyped one way, and you happen to be different, then jolly good for you old chum! Way to break the mold! The fact remains that a statistical average of your peers WILL and DO conform to said stereotype, so telling others not to utilize said convenient generalization is a bit asinine. |
Beat Writer Posts: 149 Joined: 13 Dec 2007 | Men are egotistical assholes, women are needy bitches. Case closed, moving on. Men need to accept that women play games and treat them like guys and just play. Yes, gamer girls are hot, but if we scare them away, then there won't be any for future generations. Also, everyone needs to chill out and not continue any flame wars started by jerks online. Yeah they are annoying, but whatever, their own social ineptness is causing them to yell at you. Let it slide. http://xkcd.com/438/ is a good example. See also Jonathon Gabriel greater internet f@#kwad theory. |

So what you're saying is that XBOX Live reflects people in real life as well? |

I will stop when you show me that statistical average. |

So what do you suppose we do about it then? Tell these people on Live that they're being rude and obnoxious? Yeah that'll fly. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 717 Joined: 31 Oct 2007 | Why are people acting like stereotyping isn't completely natural for every human being on the planet? We all do it, because we have to do it. If we don't, we have complete internal chaos. We categorize people in our mind so we can determine how to act and how to respond to different stimuli from said groups of people. There's nothing wrong with it. It's how we separate the wheat from the chaff. Now, being a bigot or a racist or some such thing is obviously very wrong, but there's an infinite number of ways to stereotype. |

Preach it! |
Anonymous Source Posts: 7 Joined: 11 Jun 2008 | AlisonPrime how long have you been online gaming? There is always going to be someone acting like a jerk no matter what your doing or where you go. Some people are just stupid like that. From my experiences from playing online since Quake in '96 to now, my only advise is just get use to it. Granted that I don't play consoles so I have not (and never will) used Live but things haven't changed much and they probably never will. Anyway, do you really care what some punk kid that you never met says?
|
AlisonPrime: Thank you for details. I'm partly in agreement with WlknCntrdiction here, and I think alot of ppl on this forum are too - no one cares if you're guy, girl, straight, gay, bi, tri, multi, quasi, or pseudo. You're a gamer. The mods here do a damn good job of keeping this place mature, and giving the banhammer treatment to the immature assholes.
I guess from my point of view, I'd never had many (read: any) girl gamer friends in high school. Then I got into pc gaming a few years ago, got on the web, found forums and gaming sites, and suddenly there's alot of them. The ones I got to know, and the ones who posted details like you have, have been enough that I 'noticed' alot of them were hot for girls (again, it doesn't always imply lesbianism specifically). I wondered if maybe there was some kind of link - you like girls, you like playing aggressive games, or killing stuff... maybe there's a connection ;)
