Muckraker Posts: 302 Joined: 8 May 2008 | I've got a novel concept right here. What if you get picked on just as much as everyone else in the gaming world, you just bitch about it more. It has been proven that women tend to react more to emotional insults, whereas it men just punch each other and shrug it off. You wanted to be treated the same? You are, on the online world, everyone insults everyone, and makes threats and sexual innuendo on a regular basis. However entering a room/post/server and saying "I'm a girl lesbian with a persecution complex! and cutting your wrists when you find out that ***OMG SPOILER ALERT!!*** people pick on people who are different, is completely idiotic. Likewise, if you don't want to get bitten, don't cover yourself in BBQ sauce and hide in a pile of chicken wings. Its common sense, if you don't have that, and you can't take insults, then GTFO the internet. |

Obviously being a guy I can't truly understand the total crap you must cop from random 12-15 y/o male idiots who seem to flood the gaming world. Whilst all I can offer you is apologies from the mature non-moron males in the gaming world (we make up about 2.97% of them btw), I must say I feel for you. Your anger is duly deserved. I've been playing in the online FPS world for a good number of years now and cop no endings of crap from pimply little retards who refuse to even look at me at big LANS but will spout crap to you over the safety of the interweb. Kudos to you for every single one of them you kill. May it be many! Cheers, |

OP, I find myself utterly uninterested in your sexuality, please address one issue at a time, this is about your pity party, which is a pain and inconvenience everyone has to put up with once in their life, like right now I'm putting up with your general hatred of men. |

funny that isnt it? You could even compare this to the treatment of the jews in the 1930s. They were hated for being rich and controlling all the banks... and hated for being the poor and weaker race on the streets =/ No matter how good or bad you are, the person who hates you will find any excuse to do so because theyre insecure. So yeah, the only thing to do is not care, as soon as they make fun of you in that way, you already won. |
Paperboy Posts: 14 Joined: 29 Mar 2008 | Your boat full of fail has arrived. Do you want to know why guys are such "dickheads" ? Because we can't do ballet or aerobics without being called gay, we can't go shopping together and have it be a normal social activity, not that any decently straight guy would do such things I'm just trying to prove a point. So then you have gaming which has been since its inception in the world been a male dominated past time and we enjoy it, then girls have the audacity to to enter our playing field and want equal treatment when it is clearly not their place to ask for it ? But I'll get to the point : stop bitching about being called a lesbian or a 10-year-old boy when playing PC games because I know for a fact that if I do ballet I'll be called a queer or a 10-year-old girl. |

Everything, but the boat full of fail part i think best explains the girl gaming situation. |
Paperboy Posts: 17 Joined: 8 May 2008 | In the end, your grieving about something thats utterlly pointless to complain about. Theres always going to be a section of the audience aimed against women, but then again, same can be said for race, age, looks in general even. Theres probablly many more that Ive forgotten at the moment, but in the end you have to shrug and accept that a large part of the gaming audience are, for lack of a better descriptive word, douche bags. Heck, sometimes its a case of friendlly banter, but perhaps Im just used to that seeing as Ive spent most my life growing up near Glasgow. So all in all, enjoy the game and the banter, youv been accepted already, you just havent realised it yet. |

Copy Clerk Posts: 113 Joined: 28 May 2008 | Wow, what hasn't been said at this point? Hahaha. I'm just gonna throw in my 2 cents I guess.... 1. I've personally rarely run into girl gamers, online or offline. (In fact, half the girls I know love rolling their eyes if I bring up anything related to games, which I find rude cause when they're talking about their shit, I sit there and listen politely) And the girl gamers I have run into are light gamers at best. But when when a girl does come on to Live, I do agree it sucks the way some guys seem to either shoot out a rude remark or act like they've found the rarest thing in the world like a unicorn shitting out diamonds or something. However, as far as the 10 year old boy remark, please understand that we come across FAR more little kids than females, and over a headset it's not always easy to tell the difference. So give us a break, we're not trying to piss you off if we make that mistake. 2. As has been stated before, anyone who plays online, on any network, knows that half the people you meet will be immature pricks / stupid kids who use the annoymous nature of the online world to dish out their stupidity without fear of reprecussions. It doesn't stop with gamers... it's everywhere, check any BBS, go to any chat room. Sexism, racism, it all runs rampant. And it's not gonna stop until we invent a way to punch people through T.V. / Computer screens. I'm working on it... (On that note though, the Escapist forums do a good job of filtering that out). 3. I forgot.... I had a third point... but it's almost 7 am and I've been awake all night for some god forsaken reason. Oh well... Either way, best thing to do is focus on playing with your friends, or people who you already know are cool, and don't worry about the random jerks, cause you don't have to listen to them. It sucks for everyone, there's not a single person here who hasn't dealt with it in some form or another. Hell, I've had cases where someone's being a douche (I'm sorry to say, but usually some kid), I'll actually retort with a mature, level headed arguement, and their response is "Shut up fag". Everyone goes "Ohhhhhh" like I was told off, like I lost the arguement because I didn't resort to mother insults or accusations of homosexuality, and I shrug, mute them, and put them on my "avoid players" list. It's that simple, so don't let idiots get to you. |
Anonymous Source Posts: 1 Joined: 21 Jun 2008 | I don't usually post, but this prompted a reply. Sorry, I haven't read every reply. Speaking as a girl who plays games, I'll agree, there's a whole lot of stereotyping and general ill treatment. Between WoW and Live, though, I'm getting used to it. I don't see why everyone else can't, too. Dicks will be dicks, and all that. The people actually being mistreated however, are the ones more prone to make forum topics about it. Every week or two, on various forums across the tubes, some irate girl gamer posts about what an injustice it is, and how fucking annoying it is. Well, yes. But, it was annoying the last time someone posted about it. Can't we just drop the accusations and general whining? It's starting to look like women being women and drawing attention to themselves. And really, though... outside of Live and the internet community, I really don't get much teasing for being a girl gamer. My local game store, two of the people working there are girls, and three are boys, and we joke around plenty, and I've never been shortlisted for Nintendogs. Maybe I'm just lucky? (For the records, since someone posted about it way back on page one, I'm bisexual. But, three of my female best friends are gamers, and two of them are straight, so we have a 50/50 split. Conversely, two of my best male friends don't own a current-gen console, and have no interest in getting one.) |
Muckraker Posts: 302 Joined: 8 May 2008 | This thread has such a large popularity. I'm willing to bet most of it is due to guys wanting to gain favor with "teh hot babez" that frequent gamer forums. Or that from girls who crave attention, even if it is from gamernerds. Its a good thing I don't have any flaws, or else I would have to make a thread capitalizing on them and dig for all the attention I can get. I'm not saying being a girl is a flaw, but the the OP certainly seems to think it is, or else she wouldn't be using it to push so hard for the pity vote. Cry me a river, build me a bridge, and jump off of it. If you can't take the heat of the internet, the best thing to do is avoid it, not stand on a fire and bitch when you get burned. |

Now that's how it's done! In fact, that's how everyone does it. Funny, that. I must admit that when I saw the topic title, my first thought was "Fucking hell, not another 'Wah, men suck! Don't you agree, men?' topic!" If the morons on Live rail at you for being a lesbian, counter with something like "Yes, I have sex with women. That's something you're not likely to ever do." You're going into a community, and now you know for certain what it contains. Strike back at those who insult you over the Net, but there's no point getting offended. Hell, they're on Live. The best revenge they could muster would probably be spam email. Take the piss out of them, it's what they do. Oh, and the first lesson you need to learn about the use of swear words is that they're rarely used in the correct context (And even then, it doesn't really matter). They're mostly used as indicators of a person's irritation. There's some kind of subconscious grading system, I'm sure of it. It checks for frequency of use, specific words/phrases/combinations, pitch and tone, speed of speech and assigns values to individual words, then calculates the total value of the... tirade. And then there's the bonus points that can be earned for fitting swear words inside one another or for reeling off a constant stream of swear words without repeating yourself or stopping. |

They laugh it off and manage to beat those jerks. Respect must be earned, you can't just expect it to be handed to you. I have no problem playing against a girl, in fact I enjoy it more because they are usually less of a whiny brat if I manage to beat them. |

Irrelevant. That's the thing, girls are always drawing attention to themselves. You had a good point going and then you messed up by saying this, it was completely irrelevant. Like i have said(and others too have said)in the nicest way possible, we, don't, care. Is knowing your sexuality relevant or even moderately beneficial to your experience on Live or in your "rant"? No, it's not. The OP made the irrelevant point that she was a bisexual and now you've done exactly the same thing. It's just attention seeking, no one cares, least of all me. *bangs head manically on table until it bleeds* Jesus Christ, i can't take it anymore, i've had it with humanity lol. |

The "get over it" might have had something to do with me joinging the thread. I think self-pity is for the weak. The beginning, however, can easily be explained. The nerdier people are, the less they tend to leave their homes. Often the nerdius geekalius is starved for female acknowledgment, and they fail to see that this stems from their agoraphobia. So when the situation presents it self that by some chance, they have come in contact with a member of the female persuasion, they exercise the only instincts they have. The ones they learned from video games and Japanese cartoons. This is to seem as agreeable and pathetic as possible in hopes that the female will somehow be attracted to this. Hence the large presence of nerdius geekalius in the thread, tripping over each other to be the one to impress the girl. Hate to break it to ya guys, but since men outnumber girls, its very rare that a likable one will actually search for attention. Anyone who is so needy that she needs to declare her sexual orientation (bisexual, in this case meaning "I'll take anything I can get"), and any girl so desperate from attention from the largest demographic of single men on the planet, is not going to be anyone you want to associate with. |

Right, let's make a list: And now, lets take a look at where you went wrong: 2. I'm not sure how insecure you are that you can't go to a shop with another guy without feeling gay, but I go to Gamestation and stuff with my friends all the time. 3. What was it? "No decently straight man would [go shopping/do ballet/aerobics]"? Right, because who needs to buy stuff? Aerobics? Feh. Real men have bear bellies and the cardiovascular endurance of a crippled squirrel with lung cancer. And ballet? So what if they're really strong, and have a pastime that's largely populated by women? To do ballet properly, you have to have an emotional understanding of what the dance is trying to convey. Who cares if girls go nuts for that kind of shit? It's gay. 4. Wait, so, if you're a newcomer, you deserve to be treated like dirt, insulted, and be made the butt of all the jokes just because you didn't get in on it earlier? You realise there's a difference between "showing someone respect" and "not treating them like shit", right? 5. What kind of asshole do you have to be to honestly believe that your gender somehow changes how you should be treated online? You, personally, had absolutely nothing to do with the original fans of games. You did nothing to create the communities that support the industry. Why should you instantly command more respect that someone else just because you have a dick? Real clear thinking, there. You whine about ballet and aerobics so much that I honestly wonder if you're so angry because you wanted to do ballet when you were younger, but all your friends bullied you for it, or something. Anyway, to the OP: do you want equality, or respect? On the internet, they're completely different things. It's been said quite a lot in this thread, but people insult each other constantly online. You were treated no differently. |

Really? Because I just went back to Page 1, and found people not sympathizing. There are also people at page 5 who sympathize. Your perspective is amusing. Personally though, when I saw the title I rolled my eyes and clicked, expecting a train wreck. What I saw was a different type of train wreck. I can sympathize with the OP because I (and everyone else) receive the same treatment, but at the same time, I understand the nature of the game and it's players and can only think of "yeah? so what?" |
Paperboy Posts: 29 Joined: 21 Jun 2008 | You know what I find to be a little amusing. How often the majority of you call the male community on XBL dicks, or dickheads. First thing that comes to mind? /immaturity |

Huh, well i guess i read the posts wrong but it was sympathy to bitching with a little moaning in between.
I actually thought that women outnumbered men, don't remember where i heard it but that's what i heard. I just had a brilliant idea! Record my dad yelling and cursing at something in a different language (he's bilingual) and then whenever someone tries to tell me off i would just laugh and press play on the mic and wait to hear their little ears bleed. I could give you all the MP3 :D |

Errmmmmm, well, perhaps statistically that could be true. However it tends to be much easier for a girl to find a "single" guy than the other way around. |

We had a gay day of silence at our school then we tryed to have a straight day whitch resluted in us all getting detention. Again dont state your sexuality I dont care what gender you like so long as your not talking about it or trying to get married. |

In a video game, the only thing that matters is skill, unless your playing a MMORPG then losing has to do with your level and what skills you use. but in a game like halo, if i kill you its cause my skills were better, not cause I could out gender you. Any women wanna play with smart and attractive PS3 players (and yes i have the cam to prove it).... shit, if your any good you can be on my BC squad.
I'm 31 so rather see good players than a distraction thought, bring your A game.
