Let me explain.

Whenever I play on Xbox Live, I usually play with friends, we like to talk to each other obviously. However we usually mainly play at night which means we encounter a lot of Americans (this isn't a bash America thread, so chill) and when they hear our accents I hear the words "Are you British?"

I know an "insult" is coming when I hear that.

Of course I say "insult" because Americans seem to think that talking about Tea, Crumpets, the Royal Family and (god help me) The American Revolution will somehow reduce me to tears, calling my therapist and eventually resulting in me sending them a message complementing them on how big their penises are while I beg for mercy.

When you're on Xbox Live, do you ever hear something that just makes you roll your eyes and say "Here we go" Feel free to go into detail.

P.S. Why do people talk about World War 2 and the Revolution as if they were actually there fighting?

On response to seeing someone's gamertag being 'RapX', 'Pdiddyy' or whatever, a high pitched, nasal tone saying 'Hey, Rapx...are you black?'

Time for some hilarious N wording everyone!

My spartan has pink armor in Halo 3, cause I like that color. It's usually a kid with a high pitched voice who begins with a line similar to "Hey dude, why's your armor pink." Cue comments about how gay I am and bla, bla, bla, generic homophobic comments. It's at this point that I usually remove my headset. I know I could easily remedy the problem by changing my armor color, but I choose not to.

You know, I've heard quite a few Americans ask the question of other players "are you British?", heck I've even had it asked of me and I'm Australian. My stock standard response is "depends on how far you want to go back". Mystified silence....

How about when someone asks your age?

Here's the "Catch 22". If you're over 18, the little punks say you have no life because you play video games alot (even if it's not true). If you're under 18, the 20 somethings say your a little brat who has no girl/boyfriend and again has no life. If you don't answer, then you're fair game for both sides.

Internet anonynimity is both a blessing and a curse. This is the curse side of it.
Generally, unless I'm playing with friends, I keep my microphone switched off for just this reason. Xenophobic halfwits account for probably about 30% of the Xbox Live community, unfortunately.

I don't have Live, but my best guess would be:

"I don't like Halo that much". ESPECIALLY if in the middle of a Halo match.

EDIT: Suikoden II FTW! (see initial poster's avatar).

its quite simple, you ask them the same question becuase no matter what they're hypocrits

anytime a 10 year old starts talking I know an insult is coming because its probably coming from me...

YES.

However, I seem to have little to no trace of any accent whatsoever. I don't think anyone on XBL would call me out for being an American southerner.

And I figure that the only time I'd insult some one is if they're up in my face and I come up with a good comeback. Else wise I'd tell them to shut up and focus on the game at hand.

Excuse me while I divert, because I'm usually the American doing the bashing... :)

Ok, I don't bash people just because. It's usually justified.

Once, an odd ball guy got on and people said how bad he was.

He went on about how "he's a real person and deserves to be treated with respected". So like a true American, I abused someone asking for respect by delivering none. Every word from f*g to f*ck was used.

But don't worry, I won't go racial. I hate racists.

I never play match making on halo 3 because I have the worst luck, no matter what I'm gonna get a game full of retards that are gonna endlessly insult each other and me.Example: I was playing Rocket race with one of my friends and he quit as soon as the game began for some reason, and no one in the the game was even racing, they were acting like the retards they were and trying to kill each other and occasionally me if i got to close to one of the fuck-ups, and I managed to win the game by myself on FOOT.I wish they would do the world a favor and grow up or kill them selves.

I love playing warhawk on the PS3 and listening to some prats just bag ON AND ON at eatchother about being stupid. We're on the same team, shut up, just play.

Gawd, I remember this one time that 2 idiots where bitchn' at me cuz I wanted to fly the dropship. Well, god, shut it.
I just left the game. Then, they sent me messages questing my manhood, mother, and sexual orientation. How witty. BLOCK LIST!!!

Oy, same game, another time, one twat just gets all up my ass. I then get on the other team and proceed to launch tank shells up his ass. I win, fuck you.

I hate the way people act on XBL. No matter what race or religion you are, you are bashed out. I myself am an American. One time i was playing with a British kid who was 12-14 years of age. He thought he was making fun of us when he said, "I'm going to teabag Gorge Bush!" Naturally everyone laughed and told him to go ahead. And most American people aren't only pricks to Brits and Jews, but to everyone, including other Americans. Thats why i like Battlefield. You can only talk to other squadmates, who are usually made up of your buddies. I quit CoD4 because i couldn't take anymore of the, "55 Cross! You have no life! You're gay!" I usually reply, "Well i have 2 other brothers who play the game, and even if i didn't, i wouldn't have no life. You're playing, that means you're trying to become the highest obtainable rank." Which is usually replied to with, "FAG!" "LOSER!" etc. I just think that most people should lighten up and realize that we are all playing video games for the same reason, to have fun.
Thank you for reading my long rant.:)

God, I love when people get up about age. And I love it when people claim to fuck my mum. Yeah. Sure.

Hi, I'm an 18 year old New Yorker from the US of A. I have a sexy girlfriend. I graduated from high school with a regents diploma with honors. I play for fun. Shut it, and lets kill eatchother.

I read this as i am on xbox live. I feel your pain. You will never see more racism and prejudice than on xbox live, and the majority of it comes from Americans. This is because most Americans are oblivious to the outside world, They use television and stereotypes as common knowledge.
I'm Canadian, I never say "eh", and I don't live in the dark ages. I don't see whats so bad about being a Canadian, I would'nt want to live anywhere else, especially America...terrible beer.

Personal favorite of mine happened on cod4 cage match, some little English kid was saying o you must be 38 you need to get a life ect (i'm 16 O.o). So after the match he won 10 - 8 and said i got owned, then i told him he was 16 and had just got my xbox (which i had) and he said o did your mummy buy that for you?

Later i found out he was 10 -.-

that's easy, just ask them if it's turning them on and if they want to perform some sexual thing with you, they usually shut up at that point

my retort when dealing with young kids when i was over 18 was "well when i was your age i was out partying and getting laid and yet you're at home playing xbox live, who is the one that doesn't have a life?"

This one time in Gears of War a random coincidence had me and some other Americans against a team of Brits (it's not insulting to say "Brit," right?). And these were the most horribly racist Brits immaginable. Every conceivable way to bash America was used; "Football is for pussies, rugbie is a real sport," being the one I recall best. We endured the verbal abuse for a while but we just got tired of it and lashed back. "You guys can't speak English right and you invented it," that sort of stuff. Of course they responded with more intense assaults. I eventually asked them why they were playing this game if they hated America so much, I'll quote the response. "I'd like to tell you a li'ul story 'bout somethin' called the Triangle Trade. See, we sent ships to America an' colonized it so technucly you guys are Britush." Counter-response: "So technicly you've been insulting yourselves this whole game."

It was very satisfying to pwn them, and they claimed that we only won because we're so violent, citing the invasion of Iraq as proof. I politely informed them that the UK was part of the coalition that invaded Iraq and they left in disgust (I assume).

In response to your post-script; It is patriotism, citing those event as evidence for the inherent superiority of the American people. Not unexpected especially from a culture as militant as the US, but also not very sensible (as you pointed out).

Private chat for the LOSE. I consider being in private chat (especially with someone in the same party) as reasonable grounds to unleash the most potent insults of my arsenal, except in Free-For-Alls. I'd win much more than I do if my team would do a little tactical communication and coordination as I try.

Uh I usually get called Chinese or Russia and in one case Puerto Rican......Uh...And they hit me with: "speak English!!!" in that annoying generic American accent I hate so much...I can understand the Finnish and Danish guys who speak engrish yet they can't understand English that's accented?

One guy even said(no joke!): "Speak American you Nazi b*st*rd" and I'm just like "wtf?"

The most annoying English person I met wanted to be my wife and kept singing "here comes the bride" as he charged me in Halo! But I found it funny!

Most people even if their alright and friendly enough curse like there's no tomorrow...and can be considered "racist" But I don't believe in the term so whatever.

Actually, it is difficult for many people used to the . . . umm, annoying generic American accent (Midwestern is the proper term) to understand thickly accented English. Esspecially the accents that warp vowel sounds, just substituting consonants is usually fine.

Although the worst thing is English speaking accents that use more slangs, idioms, and contractions than proper English.

Out of curiosity what accent do you have?

EDIT: One more thing, there is a reason for the genericness of the Midwestern accent. It is the least idiocentric accent on Earth (by that I mean any language spoken with a Midwestern accent will probably be well understood anyone fluent in that language). That's not bragging or anything, just statistical truth.

As an australian, if i get asked whether or not i ride a kangaroo one more time, me and skippy are going to leave big fat pawprints all over whoever just asked.

I went to america once, and each day for those 3 weeks i was asked whether i owned a knife, rode a kangaroo or had killed a crocodile.

Apart from that america was cool... even if your air tasted like my toilet and you have a scarily low amount of birds and trees, it took me a week to get to sleep without any of the bird noises i was used to.

Oh god how many times has this happened to me, when I'm playing Team Tactical with my other freinds who are Rank 10 Prestige.

So if the other team win they say "Holy Shit! You guys suck, we beat Gold crosses, you fucking suck!"
So if the team loses they say "Fucking Gold crosses you have no life, I bet you do nothing but play this game"

The Easy reply to that is to ask if they ride buffalos to school/work/general commuting, worked for me when i went to school there for 6 months.

you obviously went to the city... where i live there plenty of clean air, birds, and trees. really quite a sight out of my front door. and no im not a redneck, or a "hick" i just moved there for the nice quiet enviroment.

ok back to the XBL insults, i have never been in any games with really bad racism. i met plenty of british people, african americans, australians, and none of them bothered any one, regardless of race, culture or any thing else. i guess im lucky. i meet british people, australians ect. and i never had a problem, in fact alot of them i have on my friends list now. there were some americans (now dont call me an american hater because i am american ok?) that would fight for no apparent reason, but it wasnt because of someones accent. it was because theye were either A: annoying 10-14 year olds or B: they were immature 16-20 year olds who were losing. i have never met someone over the age of 20 who gave any one a problem. thats my view on the topic.

Insult incoming when...

-ever I speak. I get comments about being some tween, or gay, etc. (My voice is on the high and light side...and by on, I mean sadly, very.)

On the other side, if I play and never speak, sometimes people figure out who the stoic one is on the chat and start insisting I say something. I won't, because of the former, so if the option to kick is there, I likely get it.

I play games to forget things like work, bills, and flaws like my voice. Don't force me to put a target on myself.

I go text only, keep voice chat off. It's not worth it if you're gaming with strangers.

The worst I've ever called someone was a "Mexican Jew lizard." It was all in good fun, of course. (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2003/11/07/)

Ah man where did you end up going? Cause youll get that kinda stuff in the cities up north. If you ever visit again try somewhere down south and get some good old southern hospitality.

Edit: O and great story here, I was playing with these 12 year old british kids in CoD4, who upon losing went on about how we were "bloody yanks". So me and my bud, just to mess with them asked them what bloody meant and then why they called us yanks. The response to the yanks question was because we were American so we asked them if they actually knew what a yankee was. They had no clue. We laughed so hard and then told them what a yankee was and told them we were offended to be called that cause we were southerners.

I do get rather annoyed by the 12 year olds british and american, but I know 2 british guys and an australian who are all cool.

yeah im from london, and i always get that crap from americans. i dont generally respond, i leave that to my more aggressive/annoying friends.

but it does wind me up a lot when two retards start an arguement along the lines of 'its all you fault we're losing because your sniping/not sniping/being a retard/not playing with the team or whatever. and they just bitch backwards and forwards about how we'd be winning by now if everyone just did what they were doing. and you can't even tell them to shut up 'cos they'll both start insulting you, and possibly your mum as well.

I'm a Mexican. You wouldn't believe how much racism I encounter.

I was in a match with my clan and we were talking and my accent slipped (if I talk too fast, you can hear it). The other team laughed and made fun of me until I just quit. Also, people find it hilarious that I love metal and dislike tacos.
