Muckraker Posts: 236 Joined: 17 Jun 2008 | I learned english from games. I started playing Redalert and Heretic when I was about seven years old, before I started taking english classes. As I continued that habit up until now, most of my practice in English and my first encounter with it was through games. That's kind of cool, iron curtain and nuclear missile launched were two of the first phrases I learned. |

Seriously, I have no idea how anyone younger than I am will ever play it if they don't have a ready and dog-eared dictionary sitting faithfully at their side at all times. I consider myself to have a fairly robust vocabulary, and that was the first place I encountered the word "pharos", which I now use all the time. |

Kraut's an extremely old term for Germans, you'll find it in the oldest of war films, especially the British centric ones. And, err, as far as I'm aware, Genophage was made up by Bioware. Writers make up words all the times, Phillip Pullman's "Northern Lights" being a good example. |

The book not the term. Perhaps I should have said "Phillip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy, but I'm lazy. |

According to wikipedia a grade school is the same as an elementary school. That means it's a quite early age, and I don't see it as strange that Wlkn didn't know the words at such an age. It doesn't have to mean the schools were bad either, as long as you encounter the word first in a game, it doesn't matter if you learn it at school later. It was still the game that thought you the word. |

yeah I sort of figured out it wasn't real when I wikied it and it only linked to mass affect page when I first heard it (I'm a complete Wiki addicted I look up everything and anything I don't know about) although if mass effect's plot gains greater noteworthiness and something similar to that weapon is created or contrived the media will most likely christen it after it. which usually does happen to those things created in fiction. although I must say I hope they don't ever create a 'genophage' :) |

You have to remember Wlkn, not everyone has a level 12 intellect like you and not everyone on this forum speaks English as a first language. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 702 Joined: 30 Jun 2008 | I've been reading above my grade level since primary school, so the only things I learned were tactics, weapon terms, equipment terms, and lots of acronyms from the MGS series, and many other tactical shooters. |
Muckraker Posts: 236 Joined: 17 Jun 2008 | That's true. Hell of a lot of weapon names. And in extension games have caused me to practice my english a lot (and french) when I visit gaming forums, something I'd never do if I didn't play. It also got me into developing games, and that has taught me even more, does that count? |

When I first got called a "buttwelder," I was laughing so hard I had a difficult time believing it was intended as a serious insult. ^_^; |

Well I played Exile 3 at a young age (around 8) so even basic words like awkward were new to me at the time, despite starting elementary school at 5 (Canada). Also, I don't think I've even heard the word incontrovertible being used outside of that one mission in Brood War. I'm not even too sure that I can blame it on my elementary school sucking, although that is most likely the case. I was considered a genius there as far as vocabulary went. |

Copy Clerk Posts: 109 Joined: 17 Feb 2008 | if it wasn't for pokemon version red on the gameboy i wouldn't know how to read at all. i just lacked the enthusiasm to learn at school but because of that games heavy text based element it forced me to recognise key words which later helped me string sentences together which then lead to me reading. therefore if it wasn't for computer games i wouldn't be able to read. |

Back in my grade school days, I was referred to as a "human dictionary," due to my (at the time) vast knowledge of words. Now that I think about it, I've learned a lot of said words from games. You know, the games that teachers/parents are always bashing because you supposedly don't learn anything from them, and your time would be much better spent reading books. With that said, I've learned the following from games off the top of my head:
Starcraft
progeny
fervent
incontrovertible
albeit
despondent
latency
dormant
Exile 3: Ruined World (funny thing is, the first thing you see in the game's intro is "exile: verb - to banish or expel)
exile
repertoire
tarry
awkward
smite
dispel
dexterity
agile
ambidextrous
dumbfounded
oaf
Phantasy Star 4
magnanimous
distortion
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
malevolent
Diablo
dyslexia
atrophy
Warcraft 3
lethargic
Grandia 2
behest
nostalgic
lament
7th Legion
immolate
