that statment you quoted from me is in regards to the original Xbox. the 360's chipset was more difficult to program for but its workflow still followed the logic of PC game design. the PS3 architecture is built more like a rendering work station where processing is outsourced to the SPUs |

tell that to your hero Gabe cause he was drooling over what the Carmack had done, when nvidia wants to make a new chipset, they talk to John not Gabe also i do believe Yahtzee was rather critical of hl ep2 and tf2, tho he did like portal and portal wasn't developed by valve originally |

I don't even like Valve sheesh I'm the Halo guy remember just saying Valve doesn't like the PS3. I don't care what engine hes making Quake Wars still sucks balls. (It seems like a lot of the games are using unreal does id own Epic? (I really don't know I haven't paid attention)) |

Thanks thats hilarious. Riiidge Racer! |
Copy Clerk Posts: 72 Joined: 4 Jul 2008 | I think the reason why I can't stop laughing is that very same E3 conference. I don't hate Sony, they're just an endless source of giggles. Sony: We're taking gaming to the next level! We've overclocked this bitch like you wouldn't believe! Guys at the Wii booth, playing WiiSports: Dude, did you hear the PS3 is $600? |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2859 Joined: 10 Mar 2008 |
It's ridge racer! Riiidge Racer!! lol. Technically, the PS3 would only be $400 (about the same as Xbox360 forgot which version) but everyone concentrates on the $600 which still bugs me. |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 590 Joined: 25 Jun 2008 | I don't hate Sony, but their crap customer service was the reason I bought a 360 this generation instead of a PS3. I begrudgingly bought 3 PS2, because they kept getting DRE's & Sony wanted to charge me 3/4 the price of a new one to fix them. I still miss some of the games that are exclusive to Sony, which is more reason to "hate" them this generation. This may seem ironic since the 360 is notorious for the RROD, but I can only speak from my experience & my 360 is still working fine, compared to my PS2's which lasted about 6 months before failing. Also their really pretentious marketing is another reason to dislike them. I could just about handle "The Third Place" but 4D Graphics, WTF? |

Yeah, i've heard storys of that before. Usually i just assume it's bad luck, but the last time my PS2 went dead all I had to do was open it up and dust it off and after that it worked like new. And keep in mind that it's fallen off my table/desk a couple of times before AND had things thrown at it in frustration. |

For Hells Sake, Microsoft did not invent the concept of Unique Play Points. It was around years earlier in the Ratchet and Clank series. MS stole the idea first! |

Yea well they said "We don't cut corners" that $400 has no PS2 BC,Memory card readers,a SIXAXIS controller, and no HD cables. The good 60 GB is only on EBAY and its been inflated to $600. EDIT: My PS2 broke after 1 year. Bought second one then traded it in 2 years later along with the cube. |

And let's also take into consideration that they announced this in front of an extremely large conference of reporters and gamers alike, so when Sony said "It's only $600" as if it were some kind of game-winning dealbreaker, everyone and their grandma heard "The PS3 is $600." I personally plan on buying one shortly for about $500, so it's not like the price is any concern of mine; I just wanted to wait until the PS3 had games that would warrant plugging it in. |

My 360 only broke once, and that wasn't RRoD. Someone dropped it and when I turned it on the motor on one of the cooling fans died, so it would overheat after brief use. Of course, since I was wise and got Best Buy's 2 year product replacement plan I was able to trade for the newer and better pro model. So, I'm happy mine broke. You people that get RRoD need to take better care of your 360's. Stand it up and put it in the open, maybe put a fan near it to improve circulation or just keep the room cooler. (I'm surprised those of you who get broken 360's more than once don't hypothesize that you are doing something wrong). |

LOL, I didn't even catch myself - still I never saw anything wrong with Nazi analogies, they are good at getting the point across. I always tend to compare military forces to the SS and point out similarities and things like that so I guess I'm a prime example of Godwins Law, unset argument or not. |

You make a very good point. After having 3 PS2's fail on me I'm much more careful with my 360 than I ever was with any of my PS2's. I use to play them for hours, days even, also in a very smoky atmosphere, when I was at uni, so it was probably my fault they failed but I was too stoned most of the time to realise or attempt simple maintenance. |

Copy Clerk Posts: 119 Joined: 21 Jun 2008 | Here is my rant on the whole thing: Wireless Controllers: I know that this isn't a very big thing...but I can say every company even Nintindo stole this idea...from...Atari! That's right...Atari did do a wireless controller...if that isn't a good thing to say every company is stealing their idea nothing is. Playstation 3: I have one...I like it but I don't like the slowness in some games and also the long update times...that's it really. I can't find anything wrong...I laugh at people when they say it overheats...I have mine below my tv in a nice big space and I only get a little warmness which I enjoy on a cold day...I ask them and they go quiet and tell me to shut the **** up. Though I have to say the PS3 has a thing saying it will last for at least 10 years...one thing I can be happy about. XBox360: I don't have it but I have played it and I like it...the controller is a little to big for me and the buttons get hard to get used too but I enjoy the thing anyways. I never did Live or anything so I dunno about that but I just like the thing...If I could buy it I would and would buy loads of games for it but I just don't want the whole will break down and give you the red finger of death. Nintendo Wii: Never played it but the fact it's named after something we all give out when we drink too much puts me off there and then. Yes it has good games but then I don't want to discover after playing it I have to pay for the stuff I broke as I frantically waved my arms and legs about to play it right. I couldn't care at all if people copied each other...as long as they made it good and not something that deserves Yahtzee then I can let them off...Microsoft copies people! Nintendo copies people! Sony copies people! That's the truth and if you can accept that then your a fanboy even if you say your not...I also don't mind the whole amount of games for each console. Yea you don't get many games to play on but at least you know that through time games will come out and if your able to wait then that's a good thing. If you don't like waiting and then you complain about buying the wrong console in the future then why the hell didn't you buy it then! Sometimes it grates me and then sometimes it doesn't. I've read most of this thread and sometimes people make sence. Every company has made mistakes so what? doesn't mistakes give them the knowledge that they did something wrong and can work to make it better. Also I see the whole the companies don't care about people....that's because the bosses don't...that's why they make departments about Marketing and safty and all that so they don't have to care about them...they pay others TO care about the people. Don't blame the company...blame the fat money obessed big shots up there in their overpriced luxery homes smoking real money off their tusk tables and talk to people on their 2000 dimond incrusted phone. |
Muckraker Posts: 241 Joined: 21 Jun 2008 | I have a couple things to say. First. I like Playstations (my name says it all). The original Playstation was my first console (I'm 15). People- "Sony is just copying and making it better" And that's what everybody does! If nobody did it then we would have one console with rumble, one with motion sensor, one with online, one with achievments, one with duel anolog, one with hard drive. And then if you have to decide between Xbox 360 and PS3. The differences are minor at most (except games). What would you do if it was like this? Xbox 360- online, achievments People- "Sony's Home is like the Wii's Mii Channel" They're just trying to make it look like Sony is ripping somebody else off. People- "The PS3 has to many glitches" I've had my PS3 over a year. How many times has it broke down or done ANYTHING wrong? People- "The PS3 is to expensive" Have you looked at the recent prices? Yes it was way to expensive when they relesed it but how much have the prices gone down. People- "There were so many rumors surrounding the PS3" I never heard ANY! The only thing I heard about the PS3 was that it was going to be expensive. And don't get me started on the rumors around the 360. I'll tell you one. I don't know if you heard this but everybody where I lived heard it. Goes like this. Person 1- The Xbox 360 is going to have a hard drive so you can't tell places that rent games you have one. I call Bullshit on that. There. I'm done. Now I will let all of you who disagree start quoting me and cussing me out and telling me how I'm wrong and I don't gave a crap. |

What the hells amerge? You mean a merger? Yeah, I think downsizing is a cruel practice too, but face facts mate - thats the world we live in now. I would call bullshit on someone saying that any multinational company (in any business - mining, food, clothing, you name it) has not gone through downsizing at some point. But I do doubt it would be "a good part of their employees", thats not the common practice, unless you are the acquired company. |

Not really a surprise since Gabe isn't really a coder but a producer at Valve. That being said, if I were to pick between Half-Life 2 or Doom 3, I'd pick the former in a heartbeat. Doom 3 and its descendants really aren't games "that even turned down look great and run well".
But that's not the idea we're talking about. The idea is a universal high score that all the platform's games add to. And as far as I know, MS really did do that first. As for my reasons of Sony hate: And my reasons for PS3 dislike: As for folks complaining about kids screaming into the mic in Xbox Live, there's a mute button and you also have the option to switch to a channel that only has your friends in it. In general the whole experience on the 360 is more unified, but Sony seems to be getting there with ingame XMB and the new store. I am interested in seeing how MS answers this, since we didn't have a spring update, which hopefully means we'll be getting some new stuff as well. Like a new dashboard (hopefully). Oh, and typing MS "m$" really stopped being funny at around 10 years ago. |

Yes, but Microsoft only made, it as you said, universially known. Games had achievment-like awards that unlocked in game stuff instead of just adding a number to a bigger number. Hell, an example would be some of the Jak games, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, Ratchet and Clank series (took me forever to beat the impossible challenge) and a slew of other games that rewarded out of style gameplay. The point is is that M$/MS didn't invent the idea as most people like to think they just made it slightly more mainstream. that's the only thing i can think of that is innovative. The controller is not innovative as i've seen an episode of "Game Makers" on G4 Rewind about the history of the Xbox (original) and when the first announced the console some people thought the controller was too big so as the interviewee said (forgot his name, i think he was one of the lead designers of the Xbox) that they took the Playstation controller design and made the original controller slightly slimmer. So that can't really be innovation. Couple more things that i'd like to mention as i had an apiphany last night. 1. People: "Sony doesn't give you the HD cable with the console!" And why would they? Many people don't have HD televisions so why would they waste money packaging HD Cables for people who won't even use them. For example, my friend doesn't have an HD TV so the cable would be useless. 2. "Sony is arrogant and stupid! Nintendo is the one that wants to have fun and M$/MS is the one that occasionaly gets drunk and pisses everywhere!!" That's ironic as you're bashing Sony for being arrogant but not Microsoft even though they get drunk and piss everywhere. But as some people have said, the Gamecube made Nintendo humbler and i'm not sure about the Xbox/Xbox360, but i guess it's Sony's turn to learn from their mistakes. Besides, they're doing much better than they were in 2006, you can't argue with that. Damn, another short list. Whatever. |
John Carmack has more coding skill in his thumb than Gabe Newell ever will sorry to say, he makes engines that even turned down look great and run well
heck the almight valve had to borrow their engine for their games from the almighty Carmack
