Only on lower levels. Infact, even when i played on the lower levels i still had to shoot them in either the Head, butt, or crotch to knock them out in one hit.

Knew it. Golden gun is okay but EZ gun isn't c'mon you fell right for it like the MGS4 comment guys (oh yea...) did when Yahtzee said it.

Or, is it a combination of the above?

So, what do you think is required?

That one, you need a good balance with weapons, otherwise they'll have obvious weak points which will hinder you in the long run.

Hi there, long time reader first time poster.
I really like the red6 in resident evil 4. When you max it out its accurate and powerful. And it looks pretty cool too.

I would define a satisfyign weapon as...

An assault rifle, big bullets, so you can practically feel the impact of the badguy splattering the wall.

And some form of secodary fire that makes a rocket lancher look like a pussy cat.

To quote the merchant - "Guns ain't always about shootin', it's realoadin' too. You'll know what I'm talking about."

Basically, loading the Red6 (or was it the "Red9"? I can't remember) also made you look like a badass, but it didn't take as long as the Broken Butterfly.

What makes weapons 'Satisfying'

the asthetic look and the gut renching feel it gives you when you land a hit with it.

that is what makes a weapon satisfying.

when you fling a washing machine at a combine trooper you just Feel the pain that he ragdolls with the heavy peice of machineary.

It was red9.

In response to the thread, I would say a loud bang and a good firing speed. I like it to be thin though, those clunky rocket launchers are ugly. I like the Shotgun in Resident Evil 4 because it would make a load sound and destroy everything you shot.

10 words to describe how to satisfy me with a weapon:

Titanic Blue Laser of Destruction that lasts for 10 seconds.

I have to say it would be creativity - if it can blow shit up in ways its never been blown up before. Thats why I like the Screaming Mantis Dolls and all of Insomniacs games

The most satisfying weapon?
One that has the potential to be hard hitting, have a fair ammo clip, and requires a good amount of talent or skill to master. One that you can say "yeah, I worked for that, and now that I've worked for it I can use it to a sick dangerous degree"
In other words, almost every single weapon in the Unreal Series, especially unreal 3. Mastering any weapon in that game gives you a monster to unleash, because every weapon is balanced so well.
Now if I had to go for an instant gratification weapon? Proxy Mines. Hands Down.
Funny, Fatal, and with a slight touch of random chance, "just to keep you on your feet" If you don't know what I'm talking about; look up Chaotic Dreams or ChaosUT Proxy Mines. Fun fun weapon.

Sound is important to me. I loved all of the guns in Red Orchestra and Brothers in Arms because they sounded like real exploding weapons, even if they did sound alike. Nowadays, guns in games sound like (in the words of someone) "they were manufactured by Mattel" in order to make them sound different.

Ehh? I don't get it.

BUt it's still funny watching the soldier fall asleep after you shoot them in the crotch.

A satisfying weapon doesn't have anything to do with reload speed, or power (just a little bit, explained) or ammo or something like that to me.

It has to do with the effect it has on enemies. The nail thingy in FEAR is AWESOME! Nothing short of that. It nails people to walls. How can a weapon be any more awesome than that?

Rail guns are often satisfying to use as well. Large beam and often killing in one hit. And they usually sound nice and have a lot of moving parts that just do things (cool reload). I mean, just check the reload animations of the rail guns in Renegade and tell me those aren't awesome weapons. That game also has a few other awesome weapons. Electricity rifles are awesome, depsite the fact that they don't look very satisfying when you hit people with them in that game. A minigun that sets people on fire (laser minigun) can't be wrong. And the tiberium-guns. Those are plain awesome, I mean, depleted uranium shells, that's quite cool, but shooting someone with poisionous slugs that drain the body of minerals and causes the hit persons to turn into monsters? That's sweet...

Desert eagles and shotguns are often quite satisfying as well. They sound nice, and people go flying backwards. The aurora alpha bomber in generals deserves a mention as well, sure, it's not quite the kind of weapon people are talking about, but damn, when I blow up a whole base with those things I can't even sit down in my chair and lauch like hell. Those are awesome.

A satisfying weapon is one which does the amount of damage you'd expect it to. There's nothing worse than swinging a giant sword, only to realize it does barely any damage at all.

You must hate Soul Calibur.

Well I guess I've kinda missed the point of the thread, I went with "what is more important in a gun" and not "what makes a weapon satisfy you" - and I guess what really gets me is high powered rifles with a slow rate of fire. Don't know why I like the "slow R.O.F." so much, it's kind of like it delays gratification, lets you enjoy what you've done for a moment. It could be a bolt action or just a slow semi automatic, doesn't matter.

I could go on more about certain other weapons but those are my favorite, despite not being "ideal" weapons.

The titan canon from DoW right?

-or Samus Aran's final smash?

Or an ion cannon from the C&C series.

Anyway, I feel I must agree with you. Slow rifles are awesome, for some stupid reason. I don't know how many times I've opted for a worse weapon because it feels more satisfying to use (and in extension gotten my ass handed to me by my friend that always uses the best avaviable).

If I had to choose 1 weapon it would be the M16 from COD4. Put on the laser dot sight, stopping power and the deep penetration and you have an unstoppable wapon.

The weapon's sound is, by far, the most important factor. More important than the look or even the utility of the weapon. This is very clearly illustrated in Deus Ex, where there are two pistols, a conventional 10mm pistol, and a silenced "stealth pistol" with a very unusual (cool looking) design. Despite the fact that the stealth pistol looks cooler, has a larger magazine, and is more useful (since it's silenced), the standard 10mm pistol is more satisfying to use because it has a great, loud report.

reliable damage output. i want a gun that i'm confidant can get me through most situations. pretty much any of the rifles in Day of Defeat; they have accuracy, power, range, and a reasonable enough rate of fire. the steak gun in painkiller also deserves mentioning; it serves the role of a rifle, and it's damn cool to boot.

there's also just no substitute for running someone through. be it the energy sword from halo, or sneaking up on and gutting some irritating sniper in the battlefield series, shanking someone is the best way to say "you're my bitch".

Shot f-ing gun. Always gives me a nice feel when blasting someone from behind.

Although I did kill a group of 5 people in Condemned 1 with just a crowbar without loosing any health, so I've made that a weapon close to me. Seriously, two of them where carrying guns and I wiped them all out!

I think the best weapon is actually the Falcon's Talons from Ninja Gaiden II. Nothing quite says "Overkill" like ripping someone's head off with your foot.

the steak gun in painkiller

Sorry, had to quote this... A gun that fires steaks would be hilarious!

Most satisfying gun for me is a P.O.S that you consitently die while using, trying to get kills and then eventually manage to pull off an aforementioned kill. That or actually get halfway decent with the bloody thing and annoy everyone [CoD4 RPG ^ ^ ]

A gun that shoots shuriken and ligh-wait a minute(re-checks forum again). damn beaten to it...
maybe a gun that shoots rabid fanboys, everyone knows how deadly one of them can be and it's fun to watch them mow down an enemy,
A sword that draws power from the stupidity of men, It would be massively overpowered

Silly question I think, we all know the answer. The "hugely satisfying penis-extension gun that pins enemies to walls with trees" from Painkiller. Also, again from painkiller, the Shuriken/Lightning combo gun.

Oh, by the way, yes I am aware that this has been posted at least 20 times by now but come on...Shurikens and fucking lightning...

I might add that the 10mm is also more powerful, delivering more damage per bullet.

I find the most satisfying weapons are the ones that make my controller vibrate..

Seriously though, I prefer the weapons that allow you to really 'feel' that you're causing a lot of hurt to someone who most likely has a family and never really expected to be in this evil henchman business anyway. (see austin powers)

Weapons should do what they look like they do. A shotgun that doesn't even stagger somebody when hit in the chest from point blank range is a good example of what we don't want. The same applies to tiny and useless .220 pistols that somehow have more recoil then a 120mm cannon.

In RTS: If it creates a screen obscuring explosion but only harms one or two of the twenty units in there, the designers should feel ashamed(Glares at Rise of Legends and it's, well, everything)

The most satisfying weapon is the one that makes the controller rumble when it shoots its load.

Mmm...satisfying...

Anyhow, I feel the most satisfying thing you can do in a FPS is take some guy out with a shotgun to the face. It just sums up exactly what FPSs are all about. Firepower. You're not there to think, you're there to kill and blow shit up.
