I think FPS' definitely improve your accuracy, as it gives you a better idea of how a firearm works and how its going to kick, but the SAS are nutters. I think its impossible for games to prepare you for something like the SAS

Yea, games just increase reflexes but the SAS are a bit more than that.

Games give you some ability to shoot even before you're fired a gun. Some of the more realistic ones can teach you tactics and mapcraft etc.. (see ArmA). Some can even teach you how to fly, but none can prepare you for the physical and mental exertion of the things you do in those games.
Flying, for example, even a simple turn will push you back into your seat in a propeller plane, imagine what it'll do in a 2142 jet.
I've actually been to that warfighters place once at a friend's birthday party. In short. It was THE DOGS FUCKING BOLLOCKS.

No way in hell that shooters can prepare for the SAS, or even regular combat. They can only help with reflexes, hand-eye co-ordination, and a small amount of tactics. Everything else; accuracy, recoil, loading, the extreme physical and mental stresses of both training and actual combat can in no way ever be simulated by current video games.

Games still don't compare to their real life experiences (this is only based on those games based on "real" experiences).

But prepared for the likes of special forces of any kind? Let alone the regular armed forces? No. No way in hell. It's absurd to even feed the notion of being able to join the SAS just because you completed COD4 on the hardest setting, or that you can be a world class rally driver because you've completed a Colin McRae game.

Do you really think you could effectively breach and clear a room after playing Rainbow Six?

(the list goes on, i'll stop)

Did anyone see the Top Gear when Clarkson compare GT4 to real life? He sums it up perfectly!

If you watch the clip, at the end I think he either gets 1.58 or he spins out of control. Can't remember!

Elitist FPS players are going to feel hardcore now! Haha, I don't believe than anything as comfortable as playing video games can prepare you for the consequences and responsibilities of handling a real weapon in the SAS.

Just text my cousin who is a Royal Marine asking if he's any good at games like COD4. Keep you posted!

I'm going to hazard a guess that a real gun will kick way more than my 360 controller.

In the meantime lets hope Thompson doesn't find this article.

"Video games train people to kill! A gamer himself admitted it! Pac Man Will turn your kids into murderers arr rarr rarr rarr!".

That's like saying "IM GOOD AT SNIPING IN A VIDEO GAME SO I'M GOING TO GO TO IRAQ AND SNIPE INSURGENTS!"

no.
you'll fail.
video games cannot prepare you for actual combat.
no joysticks on a gun, kiddies.

Outside of prepping your teamwork skills or your capacity to give effective orders in complex situations, no.
