Is it just me or does anyone else find the six axis pointless/over-hyped?

Admittedly I do not own a PS3 but I have played on one several times now and I find I just cannot enjoy the six axis controls no matter what game I play.

Does anyone feel the same, or do some people like the six axis feature? Does anyone prefer it to the analogue controls?

P.S. I was going to add a poll, but accidently tapped 'Enter' before I finished setting up this topic. Sorry.

EDIT: Okay seeing as this thread has turned to pros and cons of different consoles controllers, and as I just did a quick search to see if anyone else has posted a similar topic, with negative results, let's make it offical! (title/thread topic alteration).

I hate it I sold my PS3 on ebay with all the games I bought for it for nearly a grand.

Meh, the sixaxis can be useful at times. Though there few and far between. In any case, I want my rumble. lol

Too bad I don't want to buy a new controller, and have to lug around something as heavy as the Xbox 360 controller. Hey, at least I don't have to buy batteries for the damned thing >.<

It's neither here not there for me. It's a bit gimmicky and not as useful for immersion as say the rumble capability. However I don't think it's without merit.

EDIT: The X360 controller makes a great impromptu weapon.

Hold a 360 controller in one hand, and hold a ps3 controller OR wii mote in the other hand...
There ya go... Heavy lol... It's the heaviest controller. And that ridiculous battery pack doesn't help. =p

I don't know, the 360 controller does last twenty-four hours with only a one hour charging time if you use the battery packs. And has rumble.

I played my friend's PS3 for about 3 hours once, tried at least three different games, and only used the six-axis once, in one of Call of Duty 3's many "OH MAH GAWD GERMAN SNEAK ATTACK SHAKE HIM AWFF!" sequences.

I don't find Six-Axis useful, and I've used it once or twice. Maybe I didn't play the right game, but I feel it's just there for Sony to say "We have motion sensor, just like the Wii! Come buy the PS3!"

I also find the Xbox 360 controller much more comfortable, due to it's even distrubtion of weight, and that I don't feel that I can snap it in half while playing, something I do feel when holding a PS3 controller.

The 360 controller also has grip, not a smooth plastic finish that gets all slippery during those intense games...

the only thing i found really bad with the sixaxxis was flying a helicopter in gta 4, reloading is fun tho

the biggest hang up i've seen is how you hold the controller, it NEEDS to be level or you're screwed. they should have put in a visual key to show you how the gyroscope is placed

heveanly sword uses the sixaxxis and twing twang lvls were hard at first, then i figured out how to do it and i was doing crotch and head shots all the time

lair was actually pretty fun playing with the sixaxxis, not as bad as everyone said

Yes the sixaxis is useless. I wish they would lengthen the grips a bit and soften the edges like on the 360's pad. Oh and at the least put real triggers for l2 and r2.

It's not entierly useless, it does have it's places. I personally don't use it but every now and again when i have to use it it gets the job done.

I don't know why everyone rags on the sixaxis, it's not meant to be used ALL THE TIMe like the Wiimote, it's meant to give developers an option to work with and (usually) we don't have to use it. But some people do find the sixaxis a bit more accurate.

Please explain what Six Axis is. Playing it, I can't see much difference with the old controllers.

Speaking for myself, Six-Axis was touted (by both Sony and a few fanboys I know) as a revolution for the market. If I remember correctly, Sony stated that rumble was 'last-gen', and motion-sensors are this gen... which kinda bit them in the arse, what with the introduction of DualShock 3.

Yes, I agree. I think Sony was a little bit hasty to discard the rumble feature and replace it with six axis - I know which one I prefer.

Ungh, please don't make me say this again. The whole "rumble is last-gen" was a cover-up for the lawsuit that the makers of Dualshock made. I thought everyone knew that by know?

And even the wiimote isn't that great, from the experience i've played with it the Wiimote never uses it's motion controls or if it does very seldomly or just for pointing at things and jumping by just flicking it up. With motion control that great, you'd expect your arms flailing everywhere (though i guess we should be thankful for that >_>;) instead of just flicking the wiimote up every now and again to do something the game designer wants us to do. IMHO, i don't think the wiimote's motion sensitivity is being used at it's full potential, either being used as a gimmick or just being used as sparingly as the Sixaxis only that it's almost ALWAYS required.

It was that whole "sueing" thing, microsoft just payed off the company right away, sony decided to stick it out, and lost... They didn't have much of a chose in the whole "rumble" feature for the PS3, it was either "Pay or get sued"

Ah I see. I did wonder why they would be so foolhardy to ditch such an obviously successful feature. Must have missed that when it was around in the news. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Still strikes me as foolhardy they didn't pay like Microsoft though, but I guess you win some and lose some.

An example would be in, say a motorbike racing game you would tilt the controller left or right to steer your motorbike in those directions, tilt back to pull a wheelie and forwards for a stoppie. It's usually a feature you have to turn on in an 'options' menu. Try it if you have GTA4 for example, and see if it's for you.

I find all console controllers pointless since the perfect gaming controls, the mouse and keyboard, already exist.

Only game I've played where the sixaxis is actually useful is Uncharted, and I've only played the demo.

Still, sixaxis should be used for "subtle" things like "changing the arc of a grenade's trajectory" (it's in uncharted and it actually works pretty well) and not "controlling vehicles".

and I have that Dualshock 3 which has sixaxis and rumble and I must say, rumble is also over-rated. I guess it's useful to know if you are getting hit but I think by then it's too late, unless it's Halo.

Love PC gaming, but... Several flaws...

Not the most portable item (Desktop that is)
Horrible with group (split screen and such) multiplayer
And!!! More expensive...

1. True (sort of) - but you can get a smaller case, saw one called a "Litebox" and it was basically just a bigger gamecube.

2. Depends on your layout and setup but in general you're right, but it does have better online so I guess it's balanced out. Split screen play is a little harder to setup than a console would, and is only worth the effort if you have a select group of friends who visit frequently.

3. False (or Half True) - a gaming PC is what you make it to be and mine was cheap. I'll spare the details, long story short, 400 dollars in upgrades, and haven't had to upgrade since.

Giggidy.
Anyway. I like the 360 controller. It's fitted and properly weighted. The PS3 controller is a bit unwieldy, but the six-axis is a pretty cool idea. Some times the cons out weigh the pros. And the PS controller, is a prime example.

Alright here's my quick rundown.

Wii-mote: It's responsive, it's quick, and the only annoyance is no charging cable and very small battery life - and if you can't stand that stupid connecting wire then it'll cost even more for you since you need the wireless, and these controllers are already pretty damn expensive. Syncing controllers is a nuisance if you use the Wii-mote jacket.

360 controller:

Good: It fits well in my hands and has a good grip. The triggers are nice, and the LB and RB are probably the only working buttons on the damn thing.

Bad: It's very unresponsive and is pretty much only designed for shooters, The D-pad is small and a bit annoying to use, the buttons aren't pressure sensitive and have a round surface so that when you attempt to press two buttons at once chances are the character you are controlling will do the exact opposite thing you told them to do, the battery life is good but most SKU's don't come with charging cables and you need a certain battery pack that is compatible with the charging cable, as opposed to the pack that just holds two AA batteries, and last but not least, syncing controllers can be a pain sometimes.

PS3 original Sixaxis:

Good: It's got a decent grip, it's comfortable despite it's small size, and if you had a PS2 then you will already be familiar with this. Very responsive, D-pad works well, analog sticks are right by each other, the buttons have a flat surface, pressure sensitive, and are packed closely together so pressing multiple at once won't jeapordize your game progress. Once you get the hang of Sixaxis you won't hate it as much but you will still find a game that has it implemented badly. Triggers are also pressure sensitive but can still be pressed down quickly and can be good for certain games, like driving in GTA.

Bad: No rumble, sixaxis isn't incorporated well into the first few games that came out, sometimes it's thrown in there as a gimmick. Sixaxis has a harsh learning curve, making people give up too quickly. Sixaxis needs to be level to work correctly, but most people don't hold the controller that way. It's got a smooth surface and if you've got sweaty palms that could be bad, but, it's not like the controller flew out of my hands or anything.

Dualshock 3:

Good: It's got rumble this time and it works on all games, and it also gives the controller more weight, so it doesn't feel hollow. Now just copy what I said in the "Good" earlier.

Bad: If you hate sixaxis well this also has sixaxis functionality. Hardly any games have forced me to use sixaxis and when it does, it is VERY easy - but if you hate it, then you hate it.

PS3's FragFX:

Good: Puts all other console controllers to shame, just look at it - you'll know http://img.hexus.net/v2/gaming/screenshots_ps3/fragfx/fragfx_large_1.jpg" alt="image"/> - oh, and you still get sixaxis functionality and since you are already leveled it's easier to use, but only on games that incorporate it well.

Bad: No rumble but if you bought this chances are you don't give a **** about rumble.

--------------END

I'll do mouse and keyboard later but I think that's good for now. Now if you've had a different experience with these controllers or you just prefer one over the other then so be it, all controllers are nothing but a matter of preference don't start a fight with me because I don't like your precious controller as much as you do. If I missed some details please let me know though, I tried to make that text wall as small as possible.

Fixed! Har har har. What makes the PS a "Prime Example" though? I know controllers and peripherals are mainly a preference thing but...

I mean, it can't be as bad as this beast...

image

I guess it's only good for those with giant hands but if anyone has played the original xbox controller, I think we can all agree that there was no room on the back of it because the triggers took up so much room, so it felt very awkward. There was no way to put the rest of your fingers on the back of it once you wrapped your hands around it.

I like the Sixaxis, as long as its done well. In games like Heavenly Sword its brilliant, with the Aftertouch. I also really thought it was great when I used to play the demos of Motostorm, and using it for the steering. That was just so cool.

In games like GTA IV its a really fun feature. Its really satisfying to reload with just a flick of the wrist, and using it to control the Bike, Boat and Helicopter are just the shits.

In games like Resistance and Metal Gear Solid, where its used for a few little features, then its good too.

I don't like it in Uncharted, where it seems tacked on for no real purpose.

I agree with all of that and I've only played the Uncharted demo so I can't say much except for what I've seen, and that's the whole "balance beam" thing and the "grenade arcing" thing. Anything else or is that really it?

flOw was cool with sixaxis. It actually looses a lot of its charm without it. Other than that, I haven't really used it a lot. It was only used one time in MGS4, right?

By the way: Is it possible to connect the 360 controller with a PC via the USB cable used for charging?
