so i recently saw this webpage linked in the article called 10 things that dont suck about the game industry. http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=10681

i found it really interesting and think that it might be more accurate than the far too general categories we have today. there are six types of gamers listed in the site, and id appreciate you clicking the link before you answer the poll

i would say im a power gamer because im guessing that means you play ALOT of video games, know about the new upcoming games, have played video games for a long time, and have a high amount of video game knowledge.

Leisure gamer. But that's only because I don't have much money and my Sexbawcks 360 kept on breaking :P.

I fall between "Leisure gamer" and "power gamer"; I spend the hours of a leisure gamer, but generally on titles leaning towards the power gamer end of the spectrum.

I'm easily a power gamer, however that is because I'm kind of a product of my environment, the store I go to game at (they do everything but computer games, which is fine I have my own computer.) is highly competitive, to the point that you don't qualify as a decent gamer until you can go to any other store in our state, sometimes country, and waltz over most of the people at the new store. We have one or two players who have left the area who were classified in the excellent gamer (even if they are a horrible sportsman) based on their record of wins and losses, they now dominate the stores in the areas they now reside in. Honestly I just want to have fun, but after 3 years of not winning (yes it took me that long to get in a few wins, this is playing 4 games every weekend except on Christmas if it is on a weekend), losing is most certainly not fun, unless it is mind-numbingly close.

Yeh, I think I fall under power gamer, what with me playing games for long periods of time, and not playing casual games.

I am a leisure gamer as I am too poor to afford any of the current gen titles except for the Wii, and I bought my first PS2 just last year. I even traded in almost every Gamecube and PS2 game I owned so I could buy a new PS2 after my old one died.

I went with leisure, mainly because of my aversion to most multiplayer services, which seem to be a requirement of the "hardcore" crowd. Also, I'm not obsessed with shooters.

That said, I like my games as hard as I can get them, am usually on top of gaming news and new releases, and am generally pretty decent at my hobby of choice.

But yeah, my lack of willingness to submit myself to XBox Live with anything other than folks I already know, plus my apathy towards shooters pulls me out of the hardcore group.

Friendship via programmed engines and digital characters For-Teh-Win! Intentional spelling error as opposed to Acronyms!

I love video games, mostly for Escapist fun, but when it comes to [however seldom] Multiplayer, I only play to interact.

i'd have to say i'm a dormant gamer. I love games but am currently underwhelmed by the market, probably because i have a love for complex RPGs and strategy games. I do keep a very keen eye on new releases in hopes i will return to the power gamer corner some day.

I love games of all shapes and sizes, but I don't have enough money to buy very many of them. I like playing with my friends, but I don't have very many, and they never hang out with me, and I can't afford online [Except with the Wii] so I'm forced to play single-player a majority of the time. I play games all the time, but competitively I'm not very good. I rarely have the skill to beat a game on hard/expert mode, and if I do it's barely scraping by.

What does that make me?

POWER GAMER!

It is my main source of entertainment.
I have enough money to buy new games.
I have gaming as long as I can remember.
I bought a PS3 when they were relativly new (that should say a lot considering how damn expensive they were).

I don't think i fit in any of those. I game reguarly, but I don't like playing with freinds oftern uless we have a massive LAN party. And i refuse to play any game online because as Yahtzee said "they're a bunch of hooting dick holes"
P.S. I guess i am a power gamer since i finish every new game i get in a single day, or two if i'm really struggling.

Power Gamers for the win.

Gaming makes me forget about my life when I am depressed and it is a great stress reliever.

This is a site devoted to gaming culture. Did you think you were going to get anything but Power Gamers?

I chose Dormant Gamer - I love games and keep up with the industry and new releases and all that, I have a PS2 and Xbox 360, but I don't actually get a chance to play much.

I would be a power gamer, but I don't exctly spend that much money on games. So, we'll just say, I'm the wrong kind of gamer.

I voted social, but there's definite aspects of leisure and power gaming in there as well.

I think Richard Bartle's groupings beat these guys to it, heh

http://www.mud.co.uk/richard/hcds.htm
(Try and forgive his awful colouring scheme)

Admittly, Bartle was writing about Virtual Worlds (including MMORPGs) but still. His book (Designing Virtual Worlds, preview available on google) further split players into 8 groups for motivation, and alot of degrees for immersion, play style, etc.
