Paperboy Posts: 15 Joined: 14 Jul 2008 | Oh, where do I begin. Good boss fights: MGS4: Metal Gear RAY - You are fighting a metal gear...piloting a metal gear! What's not awesome about that? MGS4: Liquid Ocelot - Fun and varying combos, context sensitive commands, environmentally contextual attacks, great music and the culmination of twenty years of gaming history. And the view! My God, the view! Chrono Trigger: Lavos - Seriously...you have to fight your way to him through two other tough as nails bosses and then spend the next twenty to thirty minutes hoping this last one doesn't blow you mind, even when you've been through the game 30 times! Great music to accompnay it and engaging background visuals. You get to go all out on this guy. Katamari Damacy: The Moon - You spend the whole game getting bigger and bigger and finally on the last level you start getting ridiculous. You're rolling up unimaginable and hilarious objects. Tornados? Islands? Rainbows? Thunder Gods? The whole game is just awesome, all iterations of it. Rock Band: Green Grass and High Tides - Not only is this just a phenomenal song but it is really challenging (unless you're singing, ha ha). The guitar and drum parts are a lot of fun. You feel just awesome getting through it. And the song is epically long, making a grand way to top of an evening of jamming with your friends. Final Fantasy Tactics: Ajora, Bloody Angel - You fight and you fight and you fight your way down to this final boss fight and it can be a real pain if you don't know what you're doing. But after years of war, betrayal and one of the best plots Square has ever concocted (even though they stole it from a book) everything comes together and you're graced with a pretty good ending. GTA IV: Jimmy Pegorino - This is the path I took when I first played. This fight was a complete and total pain, but it dragged on and on and shifted from vehicle to vehicle. This was action movie good. Once you do everything right and you finally chase this smug bastard down you are more than happy to put a bullet between his eyes for ruining your one chance at a normal life. Seriously, gunfight from behind a car, gunfight in a building, chase a boat with a dirtbike, jump the dirtbike onto a helicopter, chase the boat some more, land the helicopter kill the bastard at the feet of the Statue of Happiness. Bam, ending. I think it was great of Rockstar to actually make a GTA that didn't really glorify the life of crime. You face real consequences and decisions and nothing ever turns out right. Niko just hates himself. This boss was also a nice change of pace after I stormed that freighter and killed Dimitri with a blind-shot RPG. Patapon: Gorl - Great music, just like the rest of the game. Your patapons are all raring to go to defeat this god of darkness. Evil, nasty looking boss with great animations. You want to see IT don't you? Fight, patapons! Win so you can see IT! Ha ha, I love this game. Black: That last, awesome room - You just fight a hoarde of enemies with your best guns just firing away. Ripping through enemies with the M249 or blowing them away with the .44. It's all good. What a great way to go out with a bang. Not to mention the game is just beautiful. BAD bosses: Lost Odyssey: Gongora - Could this guy have been any easier? I was even paying attention, really. I didn't even need to use buffs! And then there's the part where he uses all these super-moves that absolutely cripple your party...except immediately afterwards your non-prty members magically heal you right back up. And what a cheezy, campy ending. Great game, though. Soldier of Fortune: Pains in my assholes. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune: They seriously wanted me to shoot long-range targets with a shotgun. Long range targets hiding behind things. And you only get so much ammo. And you don't get to hide behind anything. With a shotgun. HRRGLBBL Heavenly Sword: Great game, but that last fight is just ridiculous. You don't get to be mega-powered nearly long enough and Bohan is just outrageously hard. I did love, though, earlier in the game I after-touched a dead body around a corner and smacked a guy in the mouth with the foot of it when he was mid-sentence during a cut scene. The cut scene just ended right there. Hilarious. Sid Meier's Pirates!: Same as the hundreds of other bad guys you had to fight to make your way to him. Lame. Indigo Prophecy: This game was really neat and inventive. I was really enjoying it right up until the end...and everything just sort of went off the deep end. Game's good for a few laughs, though. Bushido Blade: The guy has armour. It's not fair. :( Enchanted Arms: Holy shit. That Ice Queen is a real cold bitch. Yeah, too bad your main damage dealer and main character is fire element. Good luck! Digaea: Kind of a lame ending to such a great game... Fortunately there's so much more to do than beat the game so it makes up for it. You know you've contemplated diving into and leveling up that horse wiener. That's all for now... I'm sure I'll think of more after I post, though. Ha. |

Copy Clerk Posts: 62 Joined: 30 Apr 2008 | People haven't mentioned many RTSs yet so I'll go with: Good - World in Conflict, the entire last level where you had to save Seattle from nuclear annihilation was a serious challenge on the Hard difficulty setting because of the time limit and the wide variety of units needed to take out the Soviets. It was also a freaking epic battle, plenty of absolutely devastating TA strikes and whatnot that made for good eye candy. Bad - Age of Empires III: the very last level of the game sucked major balls. You had shitloads of resources, the ability to build very powerful units and several gigantic uber-cannons with which to buttrape an enemy who's only real advantage was that he had one unit with an instant kill attack. Lame. |

So was the previous boss as well, Seriel Killer X. After running after him for a bit you manage to lose him. The the realisation hits you like a ton of bricks... you're being stalked by a crazed killer in an abandoned house away from any help. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 4475 Joined: 24 Apr 2008 | Good: Crying wolf in MGS4 A sniper war in a blizzard surrounded by a legion of soldiers? hell. yes. Bad: Kingdom hearts 1 The final ship fight, too easy considering the fun and skill needed for the previous incarnations, that battle in the ruins of the island? brilliance... a fight against a ship with big labelled weak points? poor form. That said, i find KH 1 and 2 has some of the best boss fights in the game. MORE GOOD: The members of Orginisation XIII? hell yes. ONE USES 13 SPEARS! 13!!!!! one uses a guitar! (in my opinion hardest boss battle of the games) Big assed heartless? hell yes 1000 heartless? hell yes Trippy illusion-weilding souless wizard with lightsabers in his wrists? HELL YES (final boss from #2) I guess i just like the combat of that game, on hard mode it goes beyond pumping X and becomes a strategy filled bonanza |
Paperboy Posts: 13 Joined: 14 Jul 2008 | I really liked Ares in Spartan: Total Warrior. Took me about 2 hours of trying to finally beat him, but after I did, it felt so goooooood. If ever you play this game, NEVER KILL THE FLAMETHROWER GUYS AS THEY'RE BEING RESURRECTED. THEY WILL EXPLODE AND YOU WILL DIE. Actually, every boss in that game was great, except for the whole 'Fighting yourself' crap in Troy. Sejanus was especially fun. Lightning cannon ftw. |

Muckraker Posts: 349 Joined: 9 Nov 2007 | The end boss of neverwinter nights 1, hordes of the underdark expansion. I clicked on the boss to attack him, fetcched a cup of tea, waited 10 minutes, and then he was dead. neverwinter nights 2 had a better boss battle, but the end movie was lame (yup, a cave-in, you mysteriously disappear, but everyone lives happily ever after) The end-end boss of FFIX is damn tacked on. I hated it right that moment. |
Press Junketeer Posts: 468 Joined: 14 May 2008 | The Good: Everything or Nothing; not the final battle on the launch pad which felt more like punctuation than a final showdown, I preferred fighting the hover-jet thing in the main elevator shaft. It was imaginative and fun, and was especially challenging on higher difficulties where you had to have quick reactions, a good knowledge of the enemy and excellent timing to ensure your rockets always hit their mark. Overlord: Final showdown with 'The Wizard'; major plot twist followed by having to regroup the minions and regain your power, followed by an interesting (if somewhat easy) final battle. The Bad: Destroy All Humans 2: Fighting Premier What's-his-name on the moon. Hideous and unimaginative, like most of Destroy All Humans 2 compared to the original. Also, it was way too easy. Seriously, I defeated him on my first try within five minutes, no problem. I mean there's fairly easy, and then there's 'broken' easy. Easier than 343 Guilty Spark, on easy mode, in a game were normal is already the equivalent of easy in other games. It's just that easy. |

Really? I loved that fight, mainly because it was so cinematic and it seemed pretty intense. |
Paperboy Posts: 15 Joined: 14 Jul 2008 | Earth Defense Force 2017: Storm 1 is the last remaining member of the EDF still fighting and he stands alone against the biggest damn mothership you've even seen. While you lob rockets and missiles at this gargantuan menace, doing your damnedest to dodge the attacks of the mother ship and the other guys flying around you hopeing to hold out for just a few more seconds so the ship opens up and exposes its weak spot one more time. Awesome battle. |

Intense nothing. I beat him on my first try, and he could only kill one of my squad - I think it was Tali. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1576 Joined: 1 Jan 2008 | Good: Archimonde from Warcraft: "Archimondes Acsent". The mission is really difficult (especially on Hard), but in a good way, giving you an immense feeling of satisfaction when you beat him. Bad: Vladimir Lem from Max Payne 2: "That Familiar Feeling". Sure, the fight is really fun, and then ending is pretty awesome, but once you beat him, the whole fight just becomes a complete cakewalk, even if you dont use bullet time. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 89 Joined: 31 Dec 2007 | Good: The final boss (spoiler 1) from The World Ends with You. Just...wow. I have to say I wasn't expecting THAT. It's just something you have to play to really get. Bad: The final boss (spoiler 2) from Super Paper Mario. The game was awesome, the identity of the final boss shocked me, the ending itself was incredibly good...but the boss fight was a complete and utter pushover. Ugly: The final boss (spoiler 3) from Star Fox Adventures. It just...didn't fit. At all. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1051 Joined: 28 May 2008 | Good: Devil May Cry 3: Virgil - I really liked the battle against Virgil, thought that was pretty cool, and very hard. Well, pretty much all DMC bosses are great I suppose. Grand Theft Auto IV - The final mission of the main story was of epic proportions, as I had anticipated and brought the game to a good close. Vengeance is always fun. Bad: The two new games I just bought both had suck ass final bosses! Unreal Tournament 3: Akasha - When I first played through the game on normal I beat her far too easily (I didn't even die once) and although the ending cut-scene was cool, the battle one-on-one took ages and just got boring. Then again I am working my way to her on the hardest difficulty now and I'm expecting to get my ass whupped. As far as characters go you really don't get anything on her, other than she killed some people and you want to kill her because of that. Pretty crappy. Battlefield: Bad Company - When you finally take on the Legionnaire in his helicopter, I was expecting something a bit more epic or difficult than just taking him down with a couple rockets. Complete anticlimax, one of the easiest and most pointless bosses ever. |

Well yeah, he's not exactly challenging after everything else (I beat him first tme too without a single team member lost), but I meant it in the way action movies are intense. You know the good guy's going to win, but it still felt like edge of the seat stuff. It just seemed good because it seemed exciting talking a while and not being very hard. If anything, it would have felt less intense if it had taken multiple tries because that would have broken the immersion for me. |

Muckraker Posts: 311 Joined: 12 Jul 2008 | Anyone mentioned Doom? Worst end boss ever has to be the cyber demon at the end of Doom 3. You fight him in a donut-like arena, and he'll never attack you if you just stay on the opposite side of the hole. The way you defeat him? You shoot five imps (which is like the second weakest enemy in the game) which activates your soul cube weapon. You use the soul cube on the cyber demon (it's heat seeking so there's no chance you'll miss, and you get max health once you use it) to hurt him. Do this three times to kill him. Seriously. I fought this boss on the hardest difficulty and I still beat him in less than a minute. Horrible. Best end boss: Doom 2. Now THIS is how it's done. Doom 3 had you killing 15 imps total... here' there's like a million of them, hanging with hell knights and just about every other fiend you can think off. I mean, seriously, this boss is so cool. It's a freaking picture of a goat shooting out cubes of demons! Who thinks of this stuff? This is how an end boss is done - epic, challenging, intense, total fucking awesome. |

Same here, only took me a little while though to realize the Syringe would do it. I was like "Okay, I've killed him twice, obviously he doesn't stay dead... alright then what items do I have... Syringe! OF Course!" I liked it. |

Beat Writer Posts: 176 Joined: 4 Jun 2008 | Good: Ganondorf and Ganon from the Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time - The developers of this game (Nintendo EAD) really knew what the difference between a final boss and an intermediate fight was. The bosses at the end of each temple always provided a challenge that was unique to each encounter. They were ingeniously portrayed and executed perfectly. Metroid Prime from (you guessed it) Metroid Prime - I don't know why I just really liked this boss fight. Although Meta Ridley was a joke, Metroid Prime was incredibly fun and delving deeper and deeper into the Impact Crater provided a great atmosphere for a final boss fight. King K. Rool from DK 64 - Awesome. Plain Awesome. Diablo in Diablo I - Hard, puzzles, etc. what more could you want? It was rigged however, if you repeatedly cast stone golems they would go and kill him for you and then the screen would zoom over to watch Diablo spew blood all over the place and viola, ending cinematic without ever actually fighting him. Bad: Pretty much any game where they make you so ridiculously overpowered by the end that there is no challenge. (I'm looking at you HL2 Ep1) The single strider was a joke. All you have to do is avoid him until you get to the stockpile of rockets and then blow him away. Not really challenging at all. |
Paperboy Posts: 49 Joined: 29 May 2008 | Good endboss: defeating any race on Dawn of War Soulstorm, it didnt matter which you ended with, the were all really fun and imaginative for an RTS. Bad Endboss: Kingdom Hearts Ansem. You beat him, then him again, then him as a ship, eventually the battle just got old, and none of it was very difficult |
Paperboy Posts: 34 Joined: 25 May 2008 | Good end Boss: Liquid Ocelot in MGS4, the fact that its totally different from the entire game, plus you get tracks from every single MGS game is just amazingly well thought of, now excuse me while I dispense hot man cum about MGS4 :) Bad end Boss: Sonny Forelli in GTA Vice City, man, talk about anti-climax, you have this big gun-fight in a mansion and then, you just go to the front hallway and hold the fire button till his health is zero, what a let down. |

Meh It was too easy but it was a smack in the face for me, didn't see it coming at all, and that made it all the more exciting, if not a bit easy. Good: Bad: Honorable Mentions: |
Muckraker Posts: 339 Joined: 9 Jun 2008 | Good: Not an end boss really, but I remember it taking forever to defeat Demogorgon in Baldur's Gate 2: Expansion. I definately felt a sense of accomplishment when I beat him. Bad: The Uber/asshat feind in Ninga Gaiden 2. You go through an entire game using a sword/melee weapon only to have a boss that has to be hit by arrows while he spews hot death at you that is near impossible to dodge. Just majorly sucked ass for the dramatic gameplay style change. Much like Lost Plantet end boss, complete change in gameplay = stupid. |
Paperboy Posts: 33 Joined: 22 Mar 2008 | Good End Boss- Prince of Persia: Warrior Within : I don't care what anyone says, I loved that game most over the others in the series. The boss battle with the Dahaka got my heart pumping and took me 2 days to beat. It left me satisfied to the end too. Star Ocean Till the End of Time : Really long RPG that made me happy in the end after an epic battle against an essential God with an insti-kill attack that covers the entire arena. It was a fun fight for me. Half life 2: Episode 2 : When I got the Orange Box, I fell in love with the Half Life series. It's way with cinematics was amazing and the story was perfect. I'm not really sure if the final battle against the Massive amounts of Hunters and Striders would count as a boss battle, but, hell, I'm including it. The battle was epic, and I felt a True sense of accomplishment after winning the battle, with everybody cheering around me. I had little to no ammo and I still managed to get protect the missile silo (At the cost of all the buildings around me dieing... whoops...)and i loaded the clouds with led with the rest of my ammo to let the mood set it. It was a truly good ending...Well, not counting the ENDING...that almost brought a tear to my eye... Bad End Boss- Prince of Persia: Sands of Time : After I got through that entire game, though I loved the story, I hated the end boss fight. All you do is hold block, then hit the bastard 3 times, then hit him once more behind the curtain...Not satisfying at all...though I did love the story. Mass Effect : He runs around the arena, and you just unload 'spells' ( I know it's not magic ) and led into him...fun... Dark Sector : Not only did it have no good story, horrible pacing, and only once boss fight I found fun ( The Nemesis battle ), when I got to the final battle, I was expecting something more...Something less than tentacles with 3 weak point, hit those, then hit the tentacle in the middle, then attack the main dude...rinse and repeat. This required no skill, and nothing that I've learned throughout the game. I could do it all simply with the glaive if i cared enough. I probably could write more, but I figure I've written enough for, perhaps, 3 of me? |
Well end-bosses are supposed to be killable, and you had to have cheated if you could actually kill those little bastards.
other than that, Good end bosses would probably be the Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, their just so... grand.
the end boss from;
-'Army of Two' left me face-palming. Throughout the entire game you had to actually care about aggro for the most part and even though all of the bosses are the exact same with differing amounts of mooks surrounding them, you could kill him with about 20 seconds of shooting him (with no need to actually pay attention to aggro). And then you kick him into a pool of water. If he could escape from an exploding plane and travel through flooded Florida faster then you with a speedboat, a measly 20 story drop.
-Also if anyone played 'Gauntlet Seven Sorrows', You walk to the exit and win pretty much.
