I know there have been a few "what remakes do you want threads" but this one has a different bent. How would you remake your favorite game? What would you add/change/improve, how would this make the game better etc? Lets see you all put your money where your mouths are.

My choice for this would be Final Fantasy 6 and I would go about it the following way...

1) Next Generation Graphics done by Amano and the team that handeled Final Fantasy 9 with all the newer facets of Final Fantasy Battles such as dynamic camera angles and interesting effects.
2) Music Updates based on the myriad of orchestrated FF6 soundtracks out there.
3) Make the Limit Breaks a bigger part of gameplay.
4) A cinematic rework of the story attempting to preserve as much of the original content as possible but attempting to bring it up to the newer standards of storytelling and presentation found in FFX and FFXII.
5) Extrapolation on the War of the Magi and a little more depth to the history of the world.
6) A few more cutscenes/story bits that get a little deeper into the characters, not that it wasn't good in the SNES version, I just like the characters so much I want MORE!

The only thing I would change in any old game that I liked would be to update the graphics to next gen standard. Changing too much in great games such as the Soul Reaver's or the first couple GTAs could potentially make them lose their charm.

And I don't think I'm in any position to dictate changes concerning my favourite games, because they simply wouldn't be my favourite games if I thought they needed altering too drastically anyway.

Why not? I refuse to admit that anything is perfect just the way it is, it may not NEED to be remade, but speculation is fun.

Hmmm That's a toughie, The only things I want changed in Ocarina of Time are the graphics and making the controls smoother. Also, In Pokemon Silver just the graphics.

Master of Magic. I would like to see that one redone with updated graphics, expanded maps, and deeper hero options.

Halo 1 and 2 with Halo 3 graphics. Leave everything else alone (if you fix Halo 2 single player completely its no longer a remake)

Agreed. My favorite game is Fallout, and being a hardcore Fallout fan, I think it's perfect the way it is.

Toca 2 touring cars
Race driver GRID graphics and replay feature.
24 car racing (i thinks there were 24 cars in th 1998 season)
Same season
same racers
same tracks
same commentary Pre and post race/event
same awesome dynamic weather, flags, pitstops and fun.
It would never come out of the disk drive. Ever.

Killer Instinct.

I've been hoping for it for years, but nobody wants to remake Killer Instinct.

Just do an XBLA version with a graphics update! I don't even need new characters!

A remake of Blast Corps with better graphics, more levels, vehicles, easier controls and bigger levels. Obviously we could now have leaderboards, and there is a lot of scope for multiplayer, although I don't know what form this would take. Leave this to the devs at Rare I guess!

Dungeon Keeper is a good classic, being able to command a horde of demonic minions to destroy the goody-goody hero's of good and conquer everything in sight. I also liked to slap things just for fun as well as listen to the hero's scream as they have their gonads sawn off in the torture chamber.

As for me, It would be cool if the graphics were spruced up to date and that's about it. I also wish the bastards would finally get to and bring out Dungeon Keeper 3 as being able to finally conquer the surface as well as having conquered the underworld, will finally sprout back to life the good old game that is Dungeon Keeper.

ROGUE.

What I would do is have Rogue in the engine used to make Oblivion. The engine supports everything you could possibly want in a roguelike. And I'm sure it would be possible to write a few scripts or something-or-other to randomly generate the potions and staves and such from Rogue. All it would need is more textures for potions and support for identified/unidentified items. It would be awesome. And I would play it for a long time. And I would make it available free as an Oblivion mod, and for $5-10 standalone.

I would make a proper remake of Doom. Basicly I'd just give it this gen graphics, a more metal soundtrack, more levels, and a unreal tournament style multiplayer.

If I was to remake a classic I wouldn't change any of the gameplay and story elements but would do something like improve the graphics or atleast make it compatible to todays PCs without the need for an emulater (eg. DOSbox).
A friend of mine has games like Doom and Quake with what looked like Source graphics.

I have a mod for Doom 3 which is the first Doom but it is 3d and has Doom 3 graphics. The only difference other than the graphics is the fact that there are twice as many enemies. It's an interesting remake and is good because other than the extra enemies little to nothing else has been changed (actually I don't think it had the cool music either but I may be wrong. I haven't played it in a while).

Torment.

Freshen up the graphics a little bit: don't mess with the pre-rendered isometric style, but do improve the animations, increase the resolution, and add better transparency and anti-aliasing effects; add more character sprites so the trivial NPCs don't look like clones.

Also, take the all the D&D rules and just throw them in the trash. They're holding the game back horribly.

Mail-Order Monsters, for the Commodore64.

Use Spore-style tools to create truly awesome giant monsters. Add tons of options for special powers, psi abilities, mutations, weapons and other upgrades. Add more game modes, including destroying Tokyo (natch). The original had multiplay, but my remake would expand on it.

Sonic Adventure 1 & 2. (The Dreamcast versions)

-Better graphics
-Camera that doesn't suck
-Chao system of 2 Battle, but more, larger chao gardens, with easier management and more stuff to do.
-Multiplayer maps (More than 2 Battle)
-Easier to get all A's on Cannon's Core (Applies to 2 only)
-More boss fights with Chaos (Applies to 1 only)
-(1 only) In addition to the open world, have a level select screen like that of the second game.
-More levels (Because you can never have too much of a good thing)

Similar to the user who said FFVI, I'd like to take quite a lot of the 8-bit / 16-bit rpgs and give them that kind of treatment. It's not really changing the gameplay that much, rather than updating the visuals, cut-scenes and any ambiguities in the plot or translation. Definately add voice acting as well.
The problem is that the appeal of a lot of the older games I enjoyed is partly due to the bright 8-bit graphics, the text-boxes with bad translation, and the simple gameplay.

I'd update Half Life 1 with HL2 graphics, port it to 360 and get the multiplayer on Live. Those multiplayer maps were spectacularly awesome.

If you got Red Alert (the original one) and gave it modern C&C3 graphics it would totally rock. Nothing else needs to be changed, just the graphics. Also give the Allies and Soviets unique skins for their buildings.

Maybe do the same to Red Alert 2, but that seems sort of classic to me and probably doesn't need it to deliver a truly awesome game. Red alert though, had too many identical tanks. And identical power plants.

Final Fantasy 4
-not with the stupid chibi style they're doing now!
-everything else looks great on the remake though
Metal Gear 1 and 2
-current gen graphics
-CQC system
-Voice acting
-more interactive Codec, like the newer games
-camouflage system
-updated dialogue, but keep the cool lines the way they are (i.e. Big Boss's speech about the winner will keep fighting or w/e)
-camera!
-unlockable weapons, outfits, enhancements

that's all I can think of now

Old GTAs remade in the GTA 4 engine, leave everything as is, just upgrade the graphics.

Otherwise, I think Blood would be great in 3d graphics...all those gibs rendered in full 3d glory.

A proper 3d worms game. If not that I'd settle for a new 2d version.

That made me laugh. I loved Rogue so much that I wore out three floppies, actually purchasing the game three times. (And we think copy protection is onerous now!) And I accidentally closed a drawer up on one, so I spent hours flattening the disk back out with heavy books, then cut the vinyl jacket off and inserted the magnetic disk into a blank disc's vinyl jacket. And it played!

Let's see, I could remake Duke Nukem... Nah, that'd take too long. Daikatana with all the suck removed... Nah, who wants a shooter that's two minutes long? I know - mine would be Shadow Warrior. Remake it on the latest Source or id Software or Crytek engine for the latest and greatest graphics, make the environments bigger, and give it a bit more story, a nice long single player campaign, and some multi-player goodness - nothing like shuriken, katana, and dual Uzis coupled with political incorrectness to make for an entertaining game. You tiny grasshopper!

Not really a 'classic' but KOTOR2 - there was just so much removed from it that an awesome sequel became a fairly bitter dissapointment; despite the fact that it was still a good game, you just couldn't forget that it wasn't the game it was meant to be.

That and Nar Shadaa...gawd I hated that with a passion.

It isn't my favourite classic, but it is the game that springs to mind that badly needs to be re-released. As for how, I'd have it all brought up to next-gen graphics, have everything put back in that was removed, and that'd be all I needed really.

As for real classics? Maybe the original Metal Gear series? Silent Hill? I can think of a few but I don't know if a remake would do them justice.

Purchased? As far as I know, Rogue was never sold? It may have been for a few years, but other than that, it was usually free. It was even packaged with various operating systems for a time. I like the story, though. I have a question, though. Do you still have your full version? If so, can I have it? Just the exe and the options file would be fine. I've been playing an exe-only version, and I really miss the options.

Surely a dungeon has to be underground to be considered a dungeon? How scary would your dungeon be if it was in broad daylight and susceptible to attack from an army of humans?

Also to the guy asking for a new 2d worms game, there's been some released this year.

DING DING DING. We have a winner. Although, arguably, later, more refined roguelikes, like NetHack or ADOM, would be even better. ADOM especially seems well-fit to the Oblivion engine (which I've never played and am basing my assumptions entirely on second-hand info).

Me, I'd remake Body Harvest for the N64. I'd just spruce up the graphics, make it up to GTA standarts, and make the main guy less silly. Although what it really needs is a sequel. I can't believe that over the years 'steal a car and shoot people' won over 'steal a tank and shoot aliens'. (I'm sure that in the paralel universe shown in that VG Cats where every succesful franchise failed and vice-versa Body Harvest IV has just been released and is being considered the best game ever.)

Or, Deus Ex with more plot forks. I always wanted to be able to betray your brother and keep working for the bad guys until the end.

Lots and lots of choices. But a couple of forgotten classics I always felt could use some padding along with a facelift are the 'Assault Suits' games, aka Cybernator and Metal Warriors here. Even if they remade them for the DS, new levels, more plot, more suits, and better graphics would not be impossible. To this day Metal Warriors remains one of the only games I've ever finished and and thought 'That's IT?! More please!' though to be fair the 9 Missions it does have are quite difficult even with unlimited continues, the final boss battle sometimes being determined out of sheer luck.

Damn your black heart, LucasArts.
