I don't see a reason to get up-in-arms about it. It's not bashing or making fun of overweight people. Perhaps the name offended that woman? Frankly, I think her ridiculous rant speaks more about her own self-confidence issues than it does about a game that's anti feminist or discriminating. |
Paperboy Posts: 46 Joined: 23 Jul 2008 | *sigh* When will fat people stop crying about being fat and just hit the gym? (Also, don't read the comments. Made me want to vomit. One of these days people will realize that the best way to get people to take them seriously as a subsection of the population is to stop waving their banners that say, "I'M DIFFERENT! BUT DON'T TREAT ME DIFFERENT!") Anyway, now that that's out of my system, I fail to see where the author finds fault with the game, all I got was a heavy helping of "omfg fu sony, fat is beautiful. Also, girls rock! Wooo!" Get. Over. Yourselves. In the interest of full disclosure, I am what you might describe as corpulent. I'm not a house, by any means, but I'm definitely heavy. This isn't something I'm ashamed of, however, and it's sure as shit not something that's going to make me blame my own diminished sense of self-worth out on some faceless corporation. It's also something people are in TOTAL CONTROL OF CHANGING. Don't like being fat and unattractive? Go to the fucking gym and eat better, fatty McFatfat. I could see being offended if you were rushing in to rescue a prince and the opposing team kept exposing him to the gay as a way to keep you from being able to rescue him... PS: Also, this game looks amazing and I'm going to buy it day 1 and recommend that all of my friends do the same. PPS: If this game is anti-feminist, these chicks must HATE Super Mario Bros... PPPS: I lied, there is some comment gold in that blog. Like this. |

Muckraker Posts: 328 Joined: 4 Jan 2008 | I don't really see what's wrong, but maybe I'm just not sensitive to whatever issue it's hitting. I think the fact that you're rescuing the fat princess means that her weight is a non-issue, doesn't it? Or am I being naive? I mean, if the point of the game was to try and make her thin, or if you lose the game because she gets too fat and you lose interest in her, then yes, that would be pretty harsh. But you're trying to rescue her. How's it any different from rescuing Princess Peach? |
King of the Yetis Posts: 1958 Joined: 15 Jul 2008 | I think it depends on whether or not the little dudes you play as are uh... dudes or if you can play as dudetes. Otherwise the only female in the game is a trophy you collect in order to 'win' and to keep her yours you have to feed the bitch till she's so fat she can't move. Which is kind of horrifying in it's own special way. |

That's not really the point. From the sound of things she was beautiful and wonderful and everything a princess should be until the evil Blue (or Red really) team came along and stole her away. Now those bastards are making your once comely princess in to a fatty (or BBW?) so that you can't take her back. But you're still going to do it because your wonderful Red Kingdom loves her so much! Hmmm. So like end_boss said, her people are going to rescue her regardless of her weight. Yeah. That blog's author is sounds more and more like another angry fat chick. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1316 Joined: 12 Oct 2007 | What the hell is this person's problem? The idea is to save the princess so not saving her would cause you to fail right? So how the fuck does people's aversion to the "non-beautiful" factor into this? |
Paperboy Posts: 11 Joined: 8 Jun 2008 | I hate how everyone in America feels they have the right to be offended there are groups for everything pretty soon we'll have to deal with F.F.G.A.G.F.P (fat female gamers against games with fat princesses) |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1861 Joined: 13 Dec 2007 | When I first read the blog I didn't really get what the issue was, although the title isn't very good. But Decoy Doctorpus makes a good point, and now the game bothers me a little. |
Paperboy Posts: 46 Joined: 23 Jul 2008 | From the comments: "Please -- if Sony wants to start putting out more games like FFX that actually forced some thought into gender stereotypes I'll be happier, but outside of Oblivion IV -- done by Bethesda; and FFX -- I've not been impressed." FFX forced thought into gender stereotypes? How? By making the main male protagonist look androgynous? Oy. Vey. |

By making most of the female cast dress as exotic strippers I would have thought. I'll honestly have to wait to play the game before I make a judgement on this. I must say though, it's sickeningly cute. |

She has a problem with her confidence. Saying that Sony hates fat people is her way of dealing with those issues. She is apparently not alone as many of the comments on her blog agree with her. Don't worry, next week they'll find something new to complain about. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2715 Joined: 18 Dec 2007 | The comments where disgraceful. People signed up saying that a womens appearance isn't important and they where shouted down and called Trolls. Very hypocritical. I lost all respect for that article (thing?) when I saw the second picture. Not very tasteful indeed. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2963 Joined: 20 Dec 2007 | Wow, she must have been one of those people that thought RE4 (and soon to be RE5), and Uncharted were racist (Yeah I know Yahtzee said it but he did it for the lolz! We all know there are no Asians in Uncharted). Seriously though how can people think this is offensive or something? Princess (you know, a KING'S DAUGHTER!) is kidnapped - they make her morbidly obese. You then rescue her and bring her back - I don't know what happens later but the point is, it's just a silly little game. Maybe she'll get so mad tht she makes a game where a bunch of hot girls have to rescue a Fat Prince and then have sex with him to make him thin again. |
Paperboy Posts: 46 Joined: 23 Jul 2008 | Clearly... If the boys look like girls and the girls dress like sluts, then everyone will be SO CONFUSED they won't be able to be mad at us =^_^= Anyway, I think we need to look up the rule of the internet that this blog falls under. Seems like ever since the RE5 race controversy, every tiny little aspect of potentially inflammatory game design has pissed somebody off. Thankfully, this time we can get some good photochops out of it. >_< |
King of the Yetis Posts: 1958 Joined: 15 Jul 2008 | To be fair. I think female gamers have a lot to be annoyed about. I was pretty taken aback by the new Ivy model in Soul calibur 4. I mean I love tits but jesus, it's a bit OTT. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2099 Joined: 14 Sep 2007 | I care so very little about this game and the moral issues... |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 3003 Joined: 21 Jan 2008 | I don't see a problem with it. It seems like a crutch in order to get the team to work together to win. It's not actually meant to mean and suggest anything, it's just there in order to get the game to work. |

Exactly. If you're going to complain, complain about something that isn't so clearly a caricature. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2082 Joined: 12 May 2008 | Fat people piss me off. They are trying to pass it off as a fucking sickness. Can you imagine Jesus' time? |

Waaaaaaay too much "poor me" goes on these days. Look up the fat-acceptance movement on wikipedia some time for epic lulz. Also, the neogaf thread on this is pretty dang funny (if a bit more hostile and vitriolic than your normal escapist fare.) |

Isn't that from Ricky Gervais? |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1861 Joined: 13 Dec 2007 | Ignoring the reference; Aries_Split, there are genetic traits that make it hard to lose weight, or even impossible. It's not entirely voluntary. I'm lucky enough to have the reverse, that I can eat as much of whatever I want and still stay lean. Metabolism really makes a huge difference. |

I'd love to hear of a condition that spontaneously makes you a fatass. Point is, she's barking about something that in all likelihood, she has total control over: her lack of self esteem. |

Those genetic disorders collectively make up a tiny percentage of the causes for Obesity, also an important note about the genetic causes for obesity are that they cause childhood obesity. Genes don't just idle around till you turn 22 and suddenly swell the fat cells. |
Beat Writer Posts: 209 Joined: 16 Jun 2008 | Yes metabolism plays a huge part in weight control, but metabolism can be changed. The fitter you are, the more efficient your metabolism will become at converting food into energy instead of storing it as fat. Some people are lucky and are born with a very good metabolism, others have to work hard for it - but they can achieve it. It just takes time and effort, like most things in life. |

Praeder Willis Syndrome. I'd advise against making such rash judgements |
Muckraker Posts: 343 Joined: 17 Apr 2008 | So the players of both teams are trying to capture/save the princess regardless of her condition... Villains:"Quick overfeed her so that she's harder to carry away!" I could understand the idea of portraying the Princess as a poor female role model since as a waif she is a powerless object within the game. However the gameplay mechanic can be used regardless of sex, orientation, political belief, or any number of different variables. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2952 Joined: 10 Mar 2008 | Since i love reading so much, i'll come back in a few minutes to read the rest of this thread. But i'm surprised i didn't see this coming or atleast know that some people would be offended when i saw a small article about the Fat Princess game. Once i play the demo (there HAS to be a demo) depending on how awesome it is i'll get it, but in no way does this promote that fat people are ugly or any of the other points that the article-er mentioned. In fact, it says the opposite because of the art style and the fact that you have to save her. This is like saying that MGS4 is offensive to old people because the main character is an old person killing everyone (if you choose so) And i find it funny how the article-er wrote how she (or he?) doesn't care what awesome "photoshopping skills" you have and will just ignore them when the whole damn article is just praying for controversy. Sorry if i'm all over the place here, it's just a very funny topic. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1599 Joined: 18 Sep 2007 | There are people who protested against WALL-E on the grounds that it was biased against the obese. (I grant them the courtesy of still considering them "people" despite the obvious evidence indicating sub-human reasoning skills.) Augh. Indeed, I think there are people who just seek out reasons to feel offended. *I* feel that the world would be a better place if we just patted each one on the head, said, "There there, dear," and stood back to avoid getting splashed when their heads exploded. -- Steve |

So. Fat Princess. Looks adorable right? Apparently not as it's driven a portly chick into an frothing, claw waving rage What do you think? Is the game anti feminist? Is it discriminating against fat people?
