Cheers for the point out smart arse. Edited title. My point is, do we really want the sort of people who would only register to vote via Xbox Live to assist in appointing the next President of one of the most powerful countries in the world? It seems very bizarre to me. Whatever happened to ballot boxes? |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2846 Joined: 10 Mar 2008 | I can see some problems with this; For one, many kids lie about their age so hackers wouldn't get the information, they can "legaly" sign up for a particular service, or just because their paranoid. I know I do, It probably says I'm 27 or something years old. So how would they know they're legaly getting someone to vote? 2ndly, since it's electronic an all, obviously things could happen like in any other voting system and it owuld be curropted, but then again that could happen to any system of voting. Thridly, they'd probably vote for McCain ;P OH! and obivously we'd get people creating mutliple accounts to vote, but I think you need to pay for a new one don't you? |

US voted for George Bush without them. Can't do any worse. Jumplion will you stop running your going to sprain your ankle and they will vote for obama since McCain hate video games. EDIT:I forgot the subject/put a space eep must fix! |

I just think if people are going to vote, it should be the sort of people who would vote even if it wasn't a blade on the 360 Dashboard |

It was at Jumplion not you. |

What? Okay, the paying for a new account was a question so that proves my point more. But I could see the same problems happening on the PS3, moreso infact because it's extremely easy to make and it's free, thoguh I'm not sure if it's only the master account that can do stuff instead of the sub accounts. Oh well. And I wasn't running, I was happily skipping to my tune. |

Silver is Free did you skip that part? http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/features/silverage.htm http://xbox.about.com/od/xbox360faqs/f/xblsilverfaq.htm Its easier to make a PSN account? You don't need an E-mail and High speed? Sweet. |

Democracy doesn't work with the US Presidential election; you can thank the electoral college for that :[ |

Misworded it, jeez I'm a human to! I make mistakes! I HATE YOU ALL!! And who said you didn't need an E-mail, all I said was it's easy to make a PSN count give or take an adjective or two. Don't be such a sour puss ;O |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 3002 Joined: 8 May 2008 |
Well since your said it would be a bigger problem on PSN since it easy and free and silver is free therefore its easier to make an account on PSN which isn't true(although that is subjective I guess since you could take the wirelessness of PS3 internet and the xboxs lower price and blah blah blah) Meow! I was wondering when someone was going to notice. |
Beat Writer Posts: 142 Joined: 18 Aug 2008 | This is a good step because it might bring voting to the forefront of people's thoughts, the kind of people that just ignore it. This is just like Dark Horse (I think.. Or DC.. Some big comic maker) creating comic books of each of the candidates to try to educate and inspire a different demographic. And the whole MTV vote or die thing. Is it vote or die? Something like that. But as others have stated, it is a bad step because it is electronic, because you can lie about your age, because you can vote multiple times.. Ah.. Let's not turn the presidential election into the teen choice awards. (MTV movie awards; Johnny effing Depp won an award for being funny. Even he was dumbfounded about it. Let's hope he never runs for president..) EDIT: "Through the Rock the Vote partnership, Xbox Live members will be able to register to vote, voice their opinions to the candidates through an exclusive forum and participate in potentially election-predicting polls. They will also be able to download Rock the Vote public service announcements." There are 0 things wrong with this. It's not like people are going to be really voting through Live. This is going to get more people registered and interested though. Hurrah I say. As long as they keep it here and don't try to go next gen and do actual voting. Another Edit to Add: |
Beat Writer Posts: 205 Joined: 20 Feb 2008 | This is a great idea. It will get more young people active in politics, not to mention increase the voting power of the gaming demographic. And it isn't allowing people to vote via XBox Live. It allows people to register to vote via XBox Live. |

Guy speaks the truth. You should have to answer a questionnaire too. To prove you've been paying attention. |
Press Junketeer Posts: 412 Joined: 21 Nov 2007 | Well it's all good that they're trying to get people to go out and vote.
Yeah, but that just smacks of the literacy tests used to keep former slaves from voting. They may be stupid and ignorant but everyone, Besides what are the odds that these people wont be playing Halo or Force Unleashed all day in November? It's doubtful they will even show up. |

Give them a brief presentation before they go in the booth. Then when they vote on they're asked a random question about their choice's policies. If they fail their vote is worth only half a vote. |
Beat Writer Posts: 142 Joined: 18 Aug 2008 | Way to stereotype everyone! Oh ye of little faith, or something like that. Everyone's vote matters, every opinion counts. A lot of people don't have one yet and need educated about each candidate. Microsoft and Rock The Vote are trying to provide that information more easily than CNN. And you know what? Achievements won't be offered for this, I'm sure. So only those that are really interested will participate anyway. All of you saying that Live players are too uneducated and will pick a terrible candidate, come on.. If they're that out of the loop, they won't be enticed to participate at all. Stop calling each other and yourselves idiots, alright? It isn't as if you either inherit a love and devotion to gaming OR a love and devotion to country and knowledge. It isn't an either/or. You can have both. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 2616 Joined: 21 Aug 2008 |
No one's vote matters though; you have more of a chance of changing the world by buying a lottery ticket than voting for US president (this only applies to elections decided by the electoral college though of course; I strongly advocate in participating in local and state elections). |
Sales Manager Posts: 62 Joined: 16 Dec 2003 | I think this is a fantastic way to get voters to register. The voters will still need to the leave the house to do the actual voting, unless they choose an absentee ballot. This is a great way to motivate the younger voters out there. Since this was the largest voter turnout in history for the primaries, I imagine this November to be just as influential. |

It is true that everyones vote matters...officially. However, as bad as it is to say this, there simply are some people whose opinions are destructive and not for the good of all NOW BEFORE YOU JUMP DOWN MY THROAT this in no way suggests we should strip these people of the vote. that will turn us into a facist state and thats the last thing we want (and in some cases, the first thing some of these people want) Everyone DOES have the right to vote, and should keep it. however, you have to admit that its no good thing, for example, to make it easier for neo nazis to vote not that im suggesting xbox live allowing you to register to vote will see a rise of neo-nazis, just a load of ill-informed or ignorant couch potatoes. Please note this is not a rant at gamers or xbox's but rather couch potatoes who happen to be xbox gamers with no intention to literally move in order to vote. |

You have to move to vote its just registering. |

i know, but it could all lead to that. as much as i hate to use the term "M$" if anyone could make it happen, its M$. |
Beat Writer Posts: 142 Joined: 18 Aug 2008 | Eggo and Jebussaves88 - Of course, you're both right in some ways. And I rarely have any intention of jumping down anyone's throat (unless I'm having a particularly bad day, but then I'll take my petty self satisfying arguing to a place like gaiaonline where it will make stupid people particularly stupidly angry). I do not support the notion that just anyone should vote just because they have the right. Pour instance, my own Mum said "I don't vote but if I did I would vote for Hillary". "Why?", I asked. "Because she's a woman," was Mum's reply. I didn't encourage her to start voting. I think though, that if we keep trying to offer information in different formats (CNN, Daily Show, Comic Books, XboxLive) we'll keep being more and more likely to create more and more intelligent voters. It's worth a shot. Heck, I didn't really care for voting much at all until recently and I hate watching the news so I'm constantly searching for other reliable sources of information. (Heaven knows you can't just ask anyone these days.. Biased as all heck, even my own husband. And if you try to tell them to give it to you straight for once, they look at you like you're speaking gibberish. Defensive those voters be.) If we just keep trying, maybe we'll inspire some couch potatoes to get off their bums and do something for once. What would you rather have done? With both of your opinions about voting and the system being used thus far, what way would you both have it? |

They don't charge for this... Its Microsoft for crying out loud not M$ or even MS Microsoft its self is short form. |
Press Junketeer Posts: 360 Joined: 4 May 2008 | all this aside...this is a game console, not the red button on your remote control. If you own an xbox, you own a tv. you can get informed there quiet easily. It just feels like another place where we can have politics rammed down our throats when we dont want it. I'm a politically aware person, but not between 6pm-10pm. Thats gaming time. ANyone who isnt going to watch it on tv and internet certainly isnt going to follow it on their gaming console. |

What does the term "M$" mean? I'm sorry. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 3002 Joined: 8 May 2008 |
It implies that they are evil and ruled by money. There is one for Sony too ($ony). |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2616 Joined: 21 Aug 2008 | Facetious answer: Force all of my friends and relatives to buy lottery tickets and use the inevitable winnings to destroy the electoral college system so the world's most powerful democracy can actually be a democracy Actual answer: Force everyone on XBL to buy lottery tickets and use the inevitable winnings to destroy the electoral college system so the world's most powerful democracy can actually be a democracy (and vote for Obama because only a more liberally minded executive branch can even remotely possibly foster the change necessary to destroy the electoral college) But let's face it, Obama is as much a cog in the two party political machine as McCain is so there's little hope for any progress towards democracy to ever happen. Two parties and an electoral college makes it too easy for the status quo to remain the status quo. |
This article should explain it all
