I'm a big fan of videogame soundtracks, I consider the music really important in a game, and I own several videogame OSTs. What do you guys consider some of the best music in videogames?

I mean stuff composed for the game, not licenced stuff. So no GTAs or such things here.

Personally, some of my favourites are Alundra, for the PS1, The World Ends With You, for the DS, and the Touhou Doujin games for the PC.

What about you guys? What are some of your favourite soundtracks, or even just individual pieces from games?

Well, my favourite game OST is from .hack//G.U. for PS2. I'm yet to find one that can top it.

Anything by Nobuo Uematsu. Seriously.

Also liking the Shadow of the Colossus soundtrack, and other soundtracks like that.

Other than that mostly games with an oldschool appeal to the music. I love C64/Amiga-music, and 8-bit music almost as much. Some games on the DS, like Phoenix Wright and the Castlevania titles are good on that aspect, with the Castlevanias actually using some of the melodies of older games in the series, a wonderful homage to those great games. I'm sure the new Megaman will have great music too.

FFVI had a great soundtrack, the whole opera scene is one of my overall favourite videogame songs (specifically the version from the 'more friends' concert. Ape Escape also had some great music, as well as being an unexpectedly great game.

And yeah, Megaman/Rockman is always a source of good music, I think Crashman's level theme is one of my favourites from that series.

The techno rock fight music in Half Life 2 and its expansions is always good.

Yeah, Lost Odyssey's was great, especially after I was a bit disappointed by the Blue Dragon OST

Dub-metal soundtrack to Great Battles of WWII: Stalingrad, a lot of people didn't like it but whenever I listen to it, in or out of game, it instantly transports my mind to the Russian steppe.

I'm not sure I want my mind on the Russian steppe...but I may have to give it a listen, you've intrigued me...

Favorite OST in video games have to be Final Fantasy X and Lost Odyssey, both of them are brilliant. Nobuo Uematsu did the original scores for both.

Anything by Nobuo Uematsu. It doesn't matter if you love or hate final fantasy, its music is by far at the top when it comes to amazing tracks. Kefka's theme, One Winged Angle (orchestrated), and the elemental Lords music all hold a special place in my heart as well as many other tracks.

Actually, he only wrote about 7 tracks for FFX, and I find his work extremely overrated. As much as I love video game music even more than I love video games, I gotta say we need some creativity on these forums, we've had a ton of this topic over the last few months, always favorite soundtracks, no favorite tracks or favorite composer...

Anyway, some awesome soundtracks I have yet to mention:
-Banjo Kazooie/Tooie
-Lineage II
FFX-2 (I wrote a review once saying that I hated most of it, but it's really grown on me since then)

Well thanks for correcting me, for some reason I thought he was in charge of the whole thing.

I did say favourite tracks as well, I never said it had to be the whole soundtrack. As for my favourite composer...hmm a tough one that, I like Sakuraba, but whether I could single him, or anyone else out as a favourite? I don't know.

Marty o'donell is great. Some excellent music in Halo, and lets not rage people. The music is great. Don't deny it because its Halo.

I also enjoyed assassins creed chase music, right after you've impaled somepoor fuckers throat and talked to them for about 2 mins afterwards the resulting chase with the music is very good.

I like the music from the first two Metroid prime games. I haven't played the last so I cant say. The Music from halo at parts is pretty awesome. My favorite has to be Mass Effect.

A couple of older soundtracks that just occured to me are the Streets of Rage ones, there was some great music in there, definitely a good set of soundtracks.

And yeah, Halo has good music, and Assassin's Creed DID have good chase music, overall I didn't think it was that great though.

Some of the music from Chrono Trigger is just great. Also music from guild wars always brought a nice ring to my ears, especially the eye of the north theme, thats just EPIC.

Silent Hill II had some of the most eerie and atmospheric music I've ever heard in a game.

While I express a dislike for it, Soul Calibur III had some nice tunes too.

What is the point of making a new thread about this subject every week? Surely it's easier to just have one thread and be done with it?

I'd have to say that Jeremy Soule is one of my favorite composers.

Well, I looked, and there was nothing on the first couple of pages, nor did a forum search reveal anything enlightening. Besides, people are obviously happy to post in it, so what's the problem? If you don't like it don't post in it. I guess it just depends on whether the topics fall to the wayside or not.

Also, on a side note, i love that song, Frontier Psychiatrist, and hence love your username and pic.

One theme that I really like is that song that plays when you're fighting your rival for the last time in Pokemon Red/Blue. I was literally crapping myself out of the sheer tension that it inspired. Granted, I was only about 8 at the time, but still...

Actually, I find the main Pokemon games, and the Mystery Dungeon games, have pretty good soundtracks overall. Lots of memorable music in them.

You know that song that plays between Pallet Town and Viridian City? That really, really catchy song that doesn't get out of your head once you start thinking about it?

I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight.

I agree. Harry Gregson-Williams is a very solid composer. Look for his Hollywood stuff in "The Rock" and "Chronicles of Narnia".

However, in rebuttle, I don't think they should have crossed Snake with MI6 (don't turn the game into a Bond film...nothing can duplicate a Bond film).

I have to agree 100% with this post. Some excellent music in all of those.
