Have you ever been inspired to look up a band for the first time because of their work on a game soundtrack? For example, did you look up The Faunts after completing Mass Effect?

At the moment, my house is rocking to the Vladivostock FM standard Schweine by Glukoza (it's the one playing when you first meet Roman in the car). It's one of the catchiest songs I've ever heard.

DISCUSS

P.S- To avoid this becoming a list thread, please describe the lengths you went to in order to find out the song, and why it's awesome.

I love final fantasy music. Nobuo Uematsu is a true artist. I have many of his songs with me at all times. Also music from the Berserk PS2 game (Sign and Sign 2) is pretty amazing too.

Liberi Fatalis is my favorite game song of all time.

Frank Kelpacki(sp?) after playing the original C&Cs. My favourite of his is 'Hell March'. It's just so badass to listen to.

I found Bomb Factory after their work on DOA2. It was rather hard and exciting, but I eventually managed to get my hands on a full CD. It was my first experience with J-Rock (and really, my last despite how much I like them).

I kind of discovered Orbital after playing Wipeout on the PS1. Their song "P.E.T.R.O.L." was retitled to "Wipeout" and served as the main title screen music and one of the songs you can race to in-game.

I say kind of, because at the same time I also heard one of their songs on a mountain bike video. I bought one of their albums (In Sides) and before long I had bought them all. Since then they've been my favourite band.

That's about it really. I like game music, but if it's rock or metal then I tend to forget about it pretty quickly.

WWE Smackdown! vs Raw, the music was awsome, so I checked out some of the bands, Breaking Benjamin and Zebrahead, the former has been my favorite band since I discovered them 5ish years ago, the latter is my top 10.

Breaking Benjamin

Throw me away, yeah. That was the best song anyone could come up with on the radio in the combat sims in Second Life.
They also did the Halo 2 theme, I believe?

Do you mean Blow Me Away from the Halo 2 soundtrack? What is this Second Life you speak of?

only musical band/artist I've checked out because of a game besides original composers is Hikaru Utada... she has a truly amazing voice, and her Japanese albums are extremely catchy.

These two:

Ben Houge's work on Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magic Obscura

http://www.terra-arcanum.com/sierra/media/media-soundtrack.html
All downloadable here free courtesy of Sierra. There's a lot of excellent pieces here, aswell as the scores for any interested Violinists or Cellists.

And secondly:

Kevin Manthei - He does alot of work for television/movies etc. Aswell as a few games. My personal favourite of those is his stuff for Sacrifice:

Impending Death & Impending Victory are just :3 As are Pyro's Theme and Persephone Intense.

Final Fantasy is a given, Bionic commando rearmed (Simon Viklund) C&C as well, i'm amazed to finaly own the songs i had to previously boot up a game for. Baba Yetu from the Civ 4 sound track is good as well. Loads of GTA 4 artists are in my most playe list now because of thagt game, films as well are big influences

It's pretty common. Most soundtracks go through cycles, they get released with the game, get discontinued, rereleased etc... not sure where in the cycle it is, but the FF Chronicles version is still probably out. Best to check any importing online store, particularly gamemusic.com

I was intrigued by the music, then this scene hit me. I wanted it, and I wanted it NOW.

Yep. Good song, but the instrumental segments are too long. I also looked up GTA Vladiostok bands. I am currently hammered on the opening them to Tales of Vesperia by Bonnie Pink.

Yes it's been said, but for me, Final Fantasy is probably my biggest case.

Back in the early-net years when Windows was still in diapers... Oh wait, it still is. But back when Windows was just discovering the wonders of 32-bit, I used to search everywhere for Midi and Module music for FF. Remixes being most preferred, but even simple .mid ports of the game's basic tunes worked. Still have "ship.mid" somewhere on my PC, buried deep in the archives... 'Twas the sailing theme from FF1.

EDIT:
If we were to include movie/film music too, the soundtrack to Sunshine is a sore spot for me. John Murphy and a band named Underworld got together to compose the soundtrack/score for Sunshine, but Fox and the aforementioned artists are in a legal dispute over something, and the CD soundtrack is thus on permanent hold. I fucking LOVE the music from Sunshine, it's modern classical (contradiction I know), and it rocks. There's much irony in the fact that the RIAA always bitches that music is pirated, and here is a CD I would drop $50 on easy, and yet the fucking studio won't release it. The only song available was ripped from the DVD and pirated on Limewire, namely "Surface of the Sun". I don't know what Fox and Underworld are fighting over, but at this point, it's lose lose, because if it's over money (and everything is) then NOBODY is making money when a product won't hit the shelves...

I did check out the Faunts after Mass Effect. Though I quickly realized that M4 Part II was their only song that I really liked.

M4 has to be one of the greatest songs played during the credits i've ever heard. I actually would just let the credits for Mass Effect loop in the background and listen. Usually if I hear the song on a game I tend to use the net to find them. When B. Katamari first came nothing was online but recently found that most of the soundtrack has hit the net (Sayonara Rolling Star is paticalarily awesome).

I also have to say that Zombie game/movie end themes are usually very good. Justified by Drea (Dead Rising) still plays almost daily while reading stuff online.

Was it FF Anthologies, Chronologies, or Origins that had one FF and Chrono Trigger in it? Whichever one (think it was PSX, not PS2) came with the soundtrack for that FF and Chrono.

Oh goodness what a piece of art that is to me. I LOVE the orchestral version, and the Crisis core version deemed "the worlds enemy". Listened to it countless times and it never gets tiresome. Yea FF music, hell JRPG music in general seem to always be great. Although when I want to break away from the amazing RPG music, I listen to the tracks from the wipeout games, wipeout pulse music just RULES.

Yeah, i checked out Michael Hoenig's solo synth work, and Tangerine Dream after I heard his soundtracks. I also tried to get into Masato Makamura's band, Dreams Come True, but eh...J-Pop.

Of course, I found a few bands I like from Guitar Hero and Rock Band (namely All That Remains and Senses Fail). Other than that, the Tony Hawk franchise has always had fantastic music and it really helped to broaden my horizens in the underground hip hop genre. I'll also say SSX helped me fall in love with DJ music and electronica.

The Advent Children metal mix is my favorite version. Same song, yet so different.
