I did a search for 'Doctorpus' on google because... um... because well... just because alright, and came across this little ditty.

Criticising the piece isn't out of order. Hell it's certainly not my best, but the guy makes more than a few nasty little accusations about the Escapist.

I was reading across the Escapist forums and found a topic called "Doctorpus M.D.: Hottie catfight". Now, this article was interesting in that the first thing it seems to do is assume male gamers are clueless to the female gender. His closing statement of his first paragraph being, "Patently your average gamer has never been married."

Perhaps this is an uncalled for rant, because I couldn't understand what he was exactly getting at in his article. The opening of it appears to be about female gamers, then he starts talking about a half-male/half-female gaming market then just ends up going into him proving himself to be nothing more than a Nintendo fan boy.

His first subject is Samus Aran, the lead character from Metroid. He went on about how IGN is sexist, which everyone already knew but to the only point in his article which I agree with; everyone's shock at finding out Samus was a female. He, however, says this was "...done with as much dignity as a stripper jumping out of a birthday cake."

His reason being was because Samus ran around in "bikini" at the end. It takes some real imagination to see that as Samus running around as a blonde bimbo in a bikini, I think that he has something in common with IGN. He suggested that the ending could have proposed stuff that's never done in gaming because the whole gaming industry is based on cutting you short. Which nicely moves me along to his next subject, Peach.

I think only someone dumber than Peach could praise Peach, and that's exactly what he does. He goes off of the raw assumption that the King and Queen of the Mushroom Kingdom don't exist and that Peach is running the kingdom. We all see the holes in this theory because Peach is too busy being kidnapped to ever do anything productive for the Kingdom. Perhaps the reason we never see them is because they shun their daughter because of her overbearing sense of stupidity.

He then goes on to brag about Peach's skills based on Mario's crappy spin-off games and the overrated Super Smash Bros. series. He nominates Peach to be the best female video game character ever which is a thought that plain perplexes me. How can you have a "best female video game character ever"? It just doesn't seem logical, there's too many things to base it upon from their superficiality to their roles as characters in the story. At least Samus can take care of herself instead of waiting for a fat Italian plumber and his lean brother to save her.

If you read through that, and were able to salvage enough of your eyesight (presumably because you were trying to spoon them out because you realised the horrors that people read that and agree with it) fear more. Nearly every other forumer at the Escapist is just like this. This leads me to conclude that no matter where a video game based magazine is published, all the people who enjoy it are really just brainless zombies spewing out whatever they read in their latest articles in hopes of acceptance.

That said, the dialogue itself does give some insight into Samus's personality - a fair amount of technophobia (a distrust that spills over into hatred of Artificial intelligences) and an appreciation of nature both add to her as a character.

I'd challenge that. Samus comes across to me as a cold, ruthless, bloodthirsty bitch who will stop at (almost) nothing to fulfil her personal vendettas. How much wildlife has she killed on Zebes and SR388, both of which she eventually destroys entirely, simply because they got in her way? In fact, that incident with the baby metroid almost seems out of character for her, considering her determination to annihilate an entire species with no regard for what it will do to the ecosystem. In fact, also she comes across as extremely bigoted. Note how she'll leave the Dachora and Etecoons alone, and in fact has an amiable relationship with them, but god help you if you're an innocent Zoomer passing by.

As for the technophobia, I highly doubt it considering how dependant on technology and tech-savvy she is ("The Hunter is a proficient hacker and can move through our computer systems at will" - I forget exactly what it said, but that was the gist of a Space Pirate log in Metroid Prime). Her distrust of Adam seems to stem more from resentment at having a commander than distrust of the form that commander takes.

Who opens a topic called "Hottie catfight" and thinks: "My lord, this sounds serious..." Good thread, please don't humor those excessively angry fellows with a response. Of all the things to get mad about...

EDIT: Also, his point has been made in countless articles, yours to my knowledge has not. Thus the aforementioned irony.

Not a bad article, but I think it shows that it's leftovers from something you already did. I guess I can't blame you for stating points that were already mentioned elsewhere, that's what journalists usually do anyway :p

The problem is that in society, the progress of equality extends to women getting to play the role of men, rather than women being considered important characters.
