I've never played it, but people seem to like Command&Conquer.

Warcraft has one of the most epic stories I've ever come across, but then I really do love the lore >_>

Of course, if they ever addressed half of the Lore that has been written for Warcraft in a game it'd be one of the greatest RTSs of all time. As it stands, the games let the Lore fall to the side too much D:

Warhammer comes in second in the lore department, I just wish they'd make more video games for it, since I'm not too big into tabletop gaming.

Third would have to be either Fallout Tactics, simply because I love the Fallout storytelling, or Starcraft thanks to the emotional depth brought to 100x100px animated gifs. XD

Does Final Fantasy Tactics fall into the realm of strategy? Because it had an amazing storyline. It's a bit incoherent at times, but if you're able to follow what's going on, it's absolutely engrossing. It's even better on the PSP, what with the improved translation and voice-acted cutscenes.

Medieval II. It's history, and therefore awesome. All else pales in comparison.

Noting near JTBS okay? those are way to close to being RPGs.

World in conflict thats the one, I remember almost sheding a tear when the nuke went of, That was emptional.

Company of heroes story was decent but nowhere near the epicness of my previusly metioned ones.

Another vote for starcraft, and hopefully the second one will be just as good.

It's a Tactical RPG, not an RTS @_@

And all Final Fantasies have great stories :3

'Kay. . _.

Um, I vote for Warcraft, then. It's good stuff. Rivals Tolkien at times, I might even say.

Fire emblems story varies from game to game but 7 (First one to have international release.) had the best of the series.

If you liked the story of Homeworld 2, you should play Cataclysm (the third-party tie-in settled between Homeworld 1 and 2). The best story, and best-told story, I've ever seen in a strategy game (Yes, I have seen those Blizzard things... horrible, predictable cliché stories)

The Earth 2150 games (Escape From The Blue Planet, Moon Project and Lost Souls) had really great, well-told storylines.

Also, does Darwinia count as a strategy game?

Myth series by Bungie. They're pretty old school, but they're great strategy games with a good story.

Most of my favourites have already been mentioned (StarCraft, C&C and Homeworld series), but the games "Act of War: Direct Action" and "Act of War: High Treason" both have quite fun near future oil crisis settings, that make for a pretty nice campaign game.

The Act of war games... I didnt realy focus that much on the story i was more in the "Look at the awezum grafix/effects" back then, That was good times.

About 50 people beat me to it but Starcraft and Warcraft had fairly strong storylines IMO. Have to disagree with T.H.O.R. though. I thought the DOW story was really dissapointing given how much 40k background material they could have drawn on.

But the game itself was fucking awesome. an't wait for DOW 2

Any Total War game, I suppose...mostly because you make the story yourself.

The nature of the Bentusi race is revealed, and the internal political affairs of Hiigara play a role in the storyline too.
Some Hiigaran history, treachery, and lingering danger, and everything told in a way that never puts you out of place.
You stay on your ship, and only know about what you, your spies and your tactical analysts are able to find out. No "meanwhile at.."s, just immersive storytelling.

I'm glad about Darwinia. Really loved its storyline, I never thought I could fear for the lives of artificial beings like I did while playing it.

How are people saying Starcraft? I choose the original and more complex and enriched universe Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War.

How about some of the NWN series? Maybe it would classify more as adventure but the combat system always made me think strategy.
