It might put a smile on my face, I dunno. |
Muckraker Posts: 236 Joined: 4 Jun 2008 | I reckon any homages will be subtle nods at most. The squeal of a head crab; a circular saw blade embedded in a wall; a glimpse of the Lambda symbol. A cult hit awaits, methinks. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 762 Joined: 16 Jul 2008 | You have to bare in mind the only reason they linked their last major non-sequel game (Portal) in with the Half Life series is to give that universe a bit more depth. Left 4 Dead has no real similarities with the Half Life universe (as far as I can tell) so I don't see why it should be linked. |

The Portal stuff is going to be a pretty heavy sub-story in the Half-Life episode to come, methinks. SPOILER: What with the Borealis (an Aperture ship) disappearing an' all, along with part of the harbour. Almost as if it just fell into some kind of...portal... |

Like in the beginning of Half Life where Gordon Freeman accidentally opens up a billion and a half portals unleashing the alien army of xen and head crabs on the earth. User was banned for: A boss encounter one may never forget.... (Permanent) |

That's actually really plausible. User was put on probation for: Unskippable: Eternal Sonata. (7 days) |

No it's not. It actually has nothing to do with it in any regard. Only thing in common, game wise, is it's use of the engine. But on topic, I'm sure there won't be any kind of link. These story universes have nothing to do with each other (as far as we know, of course). As some have speculated, maybe an homage or two hidden someplace as easter eggs, but nothing substantial or story/character-wise. |

I wasn't expecting anything like Gordon Freeman flying a chopper or anything, just subtle references. |

If that was true there would be no need for the one Freeman. You honestly think the combine would of stood a chance against an army of Counter Strike players? Counter Strike players are adrenaline fueled head shot junkies foaming at the mouth, and ready to fire at anything that moves ..... I should know I'm one of em'. |

You do know the original game was called Half-Life: Counter Strike don't you? |

That would be the shortest game ever. |

I think that's because it was a mod for the half life engine. I really can't see the link between the two. I think CS more closely resembles real life, they predicted the war on terror before the Neo Cons even thought of using it as an excuse to shoot people. |

Aye, since the Half Life universe is so lacking depth. ;) Christ man, for a sci fi FPS, it's got one of the most convoluted mythologies there is. |

Too true. It's unfortunate that so many gamers can't see that. Even if you don't like a game like Half-Life or other games with deep narratives, like Bioshock, doesn't mean you can't appreciate the complexity or depth of it's story. Players come to expect the developer to spoon feed them key plot points through cut scenes or some other means. Most don't get the story of a game unless some character comes along and spells it out for them point by point. Frankly, I find that kind of narrative rather insulting. It's like the creators are saying the player is too stupid or unobservant to grasp what's going on. |

You never know. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 83 Joined: 25 Aug 2008 | I think it is pretty likly they will throw in a couple subtle references but from my understanding the setting/story is too different to make any major references. However i would love it if you could change the settings so all the zombies are headcrab zombies, thats a great idea. |

Its easy to survive a horde of Gordon Freeman zombies, just make all the doors voice activated and shoot everything that doesn't speak. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 4097 Joined: 14 Jan 2008 | Perhaps a ruined billboard advertising Half Life. But anything that would affect gameplay, or destroy the fourth wall would be a no-go. |

Barney and Dr Kleiner from Half Life 2 make a lot of referances to a failed expieriment involving teleporting a Cat. |

Muckraker Posts: 295 Joined: 13 Oct 2007 | I read some guessing pages. People are trying to put the left 4 dead levels in ravenholm. I thought that, with some modding, it could work |
Muckraker Posts: 342 Joined: 17 Sep 2008 |
I'd like to see that. Espacially if they expand Ravenholm beyond what is shown in-game. As is, it's rather hard to defend yourself. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1840 Joined: 6 Sep 2008 | Actually I found a billboard in Act one, area 2, advertising "ORANGE BOX orange juice- now with 98% orange juice" if that counts. I thought it might be a little shoutout to the Orange Box. |

Just some speculation, but what references to the Half-Life series do you think will (or should) be in Left 4 Dead? Personally, I wouldn't mind a crowbar (I must confess I got the idea from a Left 4 Dead weapons thread).
