Game designers now, because of the high cost of games, can't make anything that they don't know won't sell. Because of this we get sequels, lost and lots of sequels, because no one is willing to take the risk and try something new and untested. And now it looks like Epic is even going one step further by trying to cover their asses and make sure that no one pirates their games. Problem is that in doing this they are also alienating a decent chunk of their would be customers. The gaming industry as a whole needs to realize the no matter what they do to try and protect their games, someone can and will always pirate it. I is basically a law of the 21th century that if you distribute anything digitally, and occasionally even in different forms, you can expect it to be pirated. Basically, the gaming industry needs to learn to suck it up. Yes they will loose money to pirates and to new and unproven games, however this is no reason not to continue to make them.

HAwkeyezs: pretty soon PC will over take the "next-gen" consoles
I'm sorry, could you direct me to the place where it says that the "PC dominated the PS2"?
I think he was talking about the level of technology, graphics and gameplay available rather than actual sales figures. PC's tend to rapidly overhaul any performance deficit they have against new consoles...
If that was the case, then yes I would agree with him on some points.
However, the Wii clearly proves that consoles don't need the latest technology, although the technology certainly helps if the developers choose to use it. It's stupid to say that PCs are miles ahead in technology if there are barely any games that need that technology. Sometimes PC gaming advances to fast for it's own good, but Pc gamers tend to not care and say "You can make a PC for (let's say) $700 and you're set for 6-8 years!" News flash! That's exactly what consoles are albeit usually with a slightly less lifespan.
Yes i do agree witht the sales part, but im baseing this on the Technology side of things as the the MAJOR selling point of the PS3 and 360 weve got the "best" graphics. But in a year or so then wont. I had both a PS2 and a PC. It easily seemed to me that my PC ramped up the more enjoyable side of gaming for me. Maybe i just doint like being in my room playing single player most of the time when i can be playing multiplayer on my PC whilst talking to people with relative ease.
None of this paying (yes i know Xbox only) for ANYGAME you want to play online (the RPG at least on PC you have the freadom to pick and choose) and also another pont is i cant be bothered upgrading my dam console when Sony, XBOX and nintendo go ach bored of this make another when i can spend £100 high / high-mid range graphics card or an extra stick of RAM every 5 years.
It not like you need to be a computer genious to put one little card in a slot and if you are maybe consoles are for you. I have had my current PC for 8 years now and im running game like CoD4 and Crysis full spec. i could give you a list of what ive done to it and its not a lot at all.
But yeh i will give you that the Wii does make use of the fact that it doesnot need the latest graphics technology but its still using some dam up-to-date motion sensor tech. and in doing so it makes the thing a lot of fun but it wears out when you have younger family (4-13) going "Ruaridh help me play the Wii" or "Come play the Wii with me"
Pretty much spot on with everything you said, but to add to this, do consoles really need the "up to date tech" that PCs have? I fail to recall any game that requires a Blu-Ray drive on PC to play, and very few games utelize the best graphics card's power to it's fullest because a "better" version is just around the corner.
Like I said before, the PC is like a schisophrenic child on pixie-sticks and cocaine, jumping from one place to another. Very few developers can use the common PC to its fullest. That's a problem with PCs and gaming but it isn't as important as I think i'm making it out to be I'm sure.
Refering to the "putting the card in the right spot" I don't think the problem is how to put it it, it's what to put in. There are so many different versions of one certain component that it's overwhelming, and it takes so much research just to find good parts especially if it's your first PC you're building yourself. Sure, you might stumble across a site like the Escapist (which I thankfully did) and get help but it's not always that simple. For example, I found a random forum and I saw a topic with someone asking help to replace a harddrive for his PS3. The first post was a picture of a troll.
It takes alot of research just to get the right parts if you have to do it yourself or if you can't find any help online one way or another. But after you're fitted with some good hardware, you're set for a good while and it's not as hard as it was at first.
That is a huge advantage for consoles, but now I'm ranting so I'll stop now. |

Holy shit that's an even bigger cop out than Lucasarts used to justify not bringing SW:FU to the PC. He essentially just said that every PC Gamer is a pirate.
Fuck Epic. They've gone from being one of the best dev companies in the business to being a bunch of self-absorbed morons. No matter really. Everything they've put out after they got their Unreal Engine 3 out has been watered down drivel consisting of nothing but lackluster, clunky gameplay painted almost entirely in shades of brown and grey. Cliff needs to be fired so Epic can get back on the right track.
Right on. Couldn't agree more. |
