Yeah that may be but I'll put it like this, If your dealing with something like halo you better do your homework. |
Muckraker Posts: 283 Joined: 17 May 2007 | Jesus, IT'S NOT EVEN OUT YET. Why can't people wait until things exist before they start complaining about them? This is that "Necromancer's Choice / WOW Gayness" farce all over again. |
Press Junketeer Posts: 395 Joined: 22 Sep 2008 | To be fair, the game does look kind of mediocre, and it's entirely because of the controls. I cringed when I saw those radial menus and cursors pinned to the centre of the screen. Dreadful. Why can't developers just leave real-time strategy games for the PC? The fans are there. The controls sure as hell are there. You aren't limited to the weak console hardware (the Xbox 360's CPU is essentially three Pentium 3 processors running in parallel; a cheap Core Duo or Athlon X2 is miles better), either, so you can actually get some good graphics going without destroying the framerate. |

Not quite sure what you mean but I'll try and make sense of it. You can't have the sides in an RTS unbalanced. Otherwise it becomes A) too hard or easy in single player and B) boring in multiplayer. People will just spam one unit or only ever use one side if they can exploit an imbalance. Halo is a shooter, so it's going to make an awkward transition to the RTS genre, and inevitably some things are going to have to be sacrificed for the sake of balance. Just don't get too worked up about it. Nobody's forcing you to buy it. |

I'm pretty sure you're trolling but I'll bite. Some of the Core Duo, Core2Duo etc are based on the Pentium 3 architecture;
but those are Desktop/Laptop processors. The Xbox 360 is something completely different. It is based on the PowerPC architecture, which is what Macs used to use.
On topic: The radial menus and cursor that I've seen so far will probably deter me from picking up the game right away. But I can see it being a good little run through the Halo universe, so I'll probably end up getting it out of the bargain bin. And I'm off! |

Yeah, but not enough of them will pay for it. I agree the controls are better, but I've been surprised how well recent strategy games control on consoles. |

Not trolling; I'm just saying that putting RTS games on next-generation consoles turns out badly because, comparatively, their processors really aren't that great and they make up for that with more powerful GPUs (which is why a game like Supreme Commander struggles to be playable on the Xbox 360; despite being a heavily parallel game, the Xbox's CPU just can't keep up, even with the graphics running at around medium/low settings from the PC version). Developers are able to optimise their games for the exact same hardware combination across the board, so they can get more out of it, which is why we see so many impressive-looking console games ruining fluidly despite the fact that my 8800 GT is faster than the Cell processor.
I dunno must strikes me as being far, far more awkward than necessary. Isn't EA the only company putting its RTS games on consoles, anyways? We all know EA loves money enough to sacrifice a good game for it. |

Beat Writer Posts: 202 Joined: 3 Jul 2008 | Okay I'll try to explain it, I didn't say that the gameplay will suck or anything but one of the main point were that it's still "cartoony". The trailers all seemed like they showed a darker halo game, but it isn't. And that's a realy big dissapointment. About the spartans not in squads, From what I have read Spartan IIs operate in squads of 4 i belive so it dosn't make sense that they now work as a single unit. The balance thingy i mean't that the covenants units shouldn't take that many hits either before going down, If you watch the latest gameplay you will know what I mean. On the other hand the "shielded" units should take more hits, but cost more so they cant be overused.
Not realy but I honestly liked the halo books more than the games, And the only halo game I respect is Combat evolved. |

You know what? The book "the fall of reach" states that the armors they wear has translation software installed, makes sense dont ya think? Im reading the book right now by the way. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 3005 Joined: 22 Aug 2008 |
Not really. At what point would they have had time to develop translation software which functioned with the English language? Why would they feel the need to, as they seem to be pretty hellbent on just eradicating the humans rather than subjagating them? |

Then why do their mouths move in time with the English pronunciation? Also; allow me, with one quotation, to sum up the entirety of Fall of Reach and why any human being who can read it without bursting into rolling fits of hysterical laughter is, to put it kindly, a mouth breather. Ahem. 'The crest of the hill was bare dirt, scuffed clean of all vegetation. A dozen boys pushed and shoved on another--grabbed, tackled, rolled down the slope, and then got up, ran back, and started the process over. |
Beat Writer Posts: 202 Joined: 3 Jul 2008 | Heck I don't know but what does this have to do with my complaints on the all to cartoony halo style applied when trailers state otherwise? I know its just trailers. Also I never stated what I wan't is total realism, But from all sources that I know of marines wear weak armor. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 3005 Joined: 22 Aug 2008 |
Not hysterical laughter, maybe I need it in context, but it did provoke a chuckle. That's just silly, really.
The library in Halo 1 wasn't exactly cartoony. I thought it was a really dark (and fun(and immensely frustrating)) level. Considering only you've brought this up thus far, I'm inclined to say many other Halo fans don't share your sentiments, including me. And bloody hell, do the words "Game Balance" mean anything to you? |

I can heartily recomend the book as one of the worst I've ever read. You should try it. |

And I was all set to read the Twilight series and deem that my worse book series ever after the 'stunning' reviews that the Escapists offered me. If Fall of Reach is filled with lines like that one (I keep reading "King of the Hill" with the monotone Halo-multiplayer announcer guy's voice), it'll definetly be high up on my worst book list. |
King of the Yetis Posts: 1901 Joined: 15 Jul 2008 | Actually. You know what would be great? If I read this book to the escapist users via youtube. |

Might I suggest looking up "A dramatic reading" series if you've not seen it yet? They are utterly hilarious, both for the content and the voices. |
Muckraker Posts: 257 Joined: 23 Jun 2008 | Are you guys complaining about a sci-fi video games story line? Aren't you kind of missing the point? Isn't it supposed to be a little campy and stupid? Seriously, it's like saying Star Trek is unrealistic. I mean, shouldn't they just start by messing with the deflector? It always ends up fixing everything in the end anyways! I'm not big on RTS's, so I'll wait for some reviews and maybe a demo before I pass my final judgement. I do know however that the gameplay vids I've seen so far have made me yawn, but if the story is the usual campy and stupid Save The Earth From Destruction, I'll end up getting it eventually. |

I would love you forever. I could link you to some utterly side splitting narrations of some rather adult comics, the guy who does them is utterly devoted to sound effects. The end result is possibly the funniest thing i have ever heard and quite takes the piss out of porn in general. But that would be naughty of me. In any case, if you did it with the mind of taking the piss out of the book, i would positively leap at the chance to do some of the voices, i pride myself on my vocal ability and would just love to have a crack at the worst $16 i ever spent. |
Muckraker Posts: 268 Joined: 9 Apr 2008 | I recall liking that book when I read it. Then again, that was in 2002. The only thing I can remember about it was that there was a space battle scene that I thought was really cool. But, like I said, that was in 2002. I was in elementary school then, and I'm in university now. I might have outgrown it. |

Its been a while since I read the books but you do realize the war with the Covenant had been going on for decades...I forget the exact wording but the book made clear that the translations were made possible by deciphering covenant messages and such over the many years they had access to it. Perfectly understandable if you ask me. And yes it's odd that the Elites' mouths move with the English pronunciation, but I doubt the devs were going to make up an entire alien language just to sync their mouths with it. Well, they might, but chances are the game would suffer horribly for it. |

I think DD's whole point was to state it out of context so it seems far worse than it is. The reference is to the Halo multiplayer gametype, but Hasley (check your spelling DD) was approaching a school playground to inspect a candidate for her SPARTAN-II program. Makes perfect sense to me and is hardly close to a sumary of anything regarding the book at all. |

Okay before you say anything I KNOW it's not out yet but from what I've seen in the demonstrations and gameplay videos It's another "bright and colorfull" halo game.
When I saw that trailer 2 years ago and saw the marine practicly getting executed by the elete I tought, "Well this is a bit different", By that I meant that the marines were on the losing side or something like that. But now with the gameplay vids and demos that trailer got me hoping for nothing. And seriously why can a marine take many plasma hits before going down, Even halo wars have this. I know it's balance and stuff but still.
Also why are the spartans seperate units!? They operate in squads godamint!!!
Edit: Anyone who's read "The fall of reach" knows what will happen to the planet havrest to, If they decide to not follow the events that the book set up I will personaly bash that game to pieces!
