What do you think about movies based on games? I personally love them, Hitman was F***ing incredible and the new Max Payne movie looks like it's going to be killer (pain killer). Also they announced a God of war movie coming out in '09, it seems like every game that was based on a movie sucks(excluding Golden eye) but every movie based on a game is awesome!

Game based movie= Movie based on a game. See: Hitman
Movie Based Game= Game based on a movie. See: Every abomination to ever touch consoles. E.T. for the atari as probably the most famous example.

You appear to have your terms mixed up.

wait, isn't a game based movie a game based on a movie, and a movie based game a movie based on a game.

Generally, they suck; their development cycle is almost always too short, resulting in a crappy, stupid game.
There are a few exceptions.
A few.

In before the Riddick.

Any game based on a liscence only really works if it's based in the mythology of said movie rather than the actual film.

Short answer: No.

Long answer: Well, that's the way English grammar works.

I found the spiderman movie game tie ins to be quite good, not perfect but enjoyable.
And you phrased the title wrong.
Also, movies based on games generally suck. They suck hard.

NO. A game based movie is a movie based on a game. Urgh that's hard to read. Think of it like this: 'game based' is the adjective to describe the 'movie'. Meh.

To be honest, never seen a movie based on a game that I've enjoyed. Signed that Uwe Boll poll. The new Max Payne movie looks like it's going to be a disappointment. The trailer seems to suggest that it has supernatural elements, that it's about a war between God and the Devil. That flying thing better be a God Damn Valkyr hallucination. And what the fuck? Why is it only a 12? And what happened to the Max Payne music?

'Scarface: The World is Yours' would beg to differ.

'The Punisher' would make you change your opinion in a very gruesome & gratuitous torture scene using whatever environmental objects were around at the time. It'll probably ram your face against the keyboard until you had a backwards QWERTY tattoo on your forehead.

And the home console Lord of the Rings games (minus The Third Age of course). Not especially outstanding but very enjoyable.

As much as everyone and their grandmother is going to disagree with me, Superman Returns was actually quite fun. I've yet to experience in-game flight that matches it for sheer exhilaration. Also, you can use Ice Breath to freeze a street full of pedestrians solid. How cool is that?

Also, Spider-Man 1 and 2. The first is probably one of the best linear, level based games I've ever played, and while 2 didn't quite match it in terms of overall game quality, it was still pretty damn fun before it got boring.

Star Wars and LOTR games don't count as movie-game tie-ins. They only make use of the same universe, and those franchises are not exclusive to movies.

By the way, HITMAN SUCKED. And every other game-movie. NO exceptions.

I found the Silent Hill quite entertaining, though I was in no way sober. And I say entertaining, not good, well-written or well-acted.

The Punisher has to be THE only great movie based game.

And as far as the Tomb Raider movies go, they seem to be based more on the character of Lara Croft than any of the actual games.

Hoping that Max Payne will cut the ongoing dribble of movies from such useless directors like Uwe. Come on, his star of Bloodrayne was not even hot, and that was the entire point of the game, boobs and nazis. Some might say contrary to Tomb raider movies, but I couldn't even watch one of them to the end, as I could not play one through.

EDIT. Is the 2004 Punisher movie actually based on the game, or is it just made at the same time as the game to promote the original comic. At least the first Punisher movie was based on the comic.

Useually they are nowhere near as good as the game they are trying to portray.

For example, Resident Evil, had very little, if anything to do with the game, what does the movie do? Introduce a woman in a red dress with wire-fu.

Hitman, great game, why the hell did he pull out dual katanas halfway through the film for one dramatic fight then abandon them for the rest of the movie?

Alone in the Dark, tried to be an extension of the game, didn't do too bad a job of that but was otherwise pretty bad (I personally blame the fact that the phrase 'that's right in our area' was used on at least 4 occasions).

I could go on.

In short, movies need games but games don't need movies.

I think the game was truer to the comic. It just so 'happened' to come out at the saame time as the film. I'm playing through it again. It's very good.
Also Indiana Jones & THe Emperors Tomb, as frustrating as it is, pisses over the last f*lm.

There is not an option that best fits what I think. I think movies based on games are awesome if the game is good and the movie is actually good. The best game-movie transition is, in my opinion, Tomb Raider. And no, not just because Anjelina Jolie is so freaking hot. It was really well directed and the acting was good. The action sequences are great as well.

EDIT: I do like cake, but I can't vote for that and vote on the actual topic too.

KotOR and Republic Commando aren't really based on films considering how expanded the SW universe is these days. You could stretch it for Republic Commando, but I don't think so considering their travels on that derelict Republic cruiser. KotOR you've got no chance. It may as well have been an entirely different universe how connected it was to the films.

I fear for what will become of the BioShock movie.

Really someone wants to be making a movie of Mass Effect. Then we'd get the good half of the game - the talking - and (hopefully) not become horribly disillusioned as soon as the combat kicks in.

I disagree with game based movies because when you remove the interactivity and length from a video game story(which is what they are built upon), you get something mediocre. Plus when the public gets their eyes on such crap, it makes the games industry in general look bad.

it is rare for a film based on a game to be good. they have to change a few things for the films to make it work better but there have been a few good ones. the resident evil film were good but ive not really played the games (only none ive played is zero) so i cant really compare them, the silent hill film was good but, again, ive not played the game (one of my friend played silent hill 2 and i ended up watching him play through the entire game which is something ive never done before or since). the super mario bros film was fun for a while but it was a lot different from the games. the tomb raider film were alright but nothing special. hopefully the legend of zelda film that is being made will be worth the wait
