Press Junketeer Posts: 457 Joined: 18 Sep 2008 | Fable 2 OR Fallout 3 OR Gears of War 2 Lots of good games out this year (Mostly still to come), but I think those three are the ones that'll really take it home. And since Fable 2 comes out a week before Fallout 3, I'm going to have a freaking busy week.
And no way. |

As much as i'd like to see it happen no. The award's gonna go to GTA IV or MGS4 |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1139 Joined: 6 Jun 2008 | Since I'm indecisive I'll just list some likely contenders: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (never played, but intrigued) Grand Theft Auto IV (I don't see why it gets all these "OMFG 11/10 BEST GAME EVAR!!!!!!!!11one" reviews but it does so . . .) Gears of War 2 (because it has the pedigree) Fable 2 (if Molyneux didn't lie too much) Fallout 3 (also has the pedigree, Oblivion and the previous Fallouts) And I'd be amazed if it isn't one of them. EDIT: Actually, is Little Big Planet to come out this year? That might have a chance. |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 574 Joined: 23 Feb 2008 | Well, I haven't played fable 2, Gears of War 2, littlebigplanet, or fallout 3 yet so of the games I've played that came out this year I'd go with GTA IV. That game was seriously one of the best games I've ever played. |
Beat Writer Posts: 187 Joined: 20 Aug 2008 | I'm just shocked at how few contenders there actually are. I'm trying to think of anything at all outside those options. A "dark horse" if you will. Is this all there is? half a dozen stellar titles in the whole year? I guess we had a few disappointments too, Devil May Cry 4 came out early this year right? Maybe that has a chance as a long shot? The only other thing I can think of that is wildly popular right now is Mega Man 9. The Mags would have to be digging pretty deep to come up with that one. |

I dont think a XBLA game could win Game of the Year. I have my money on Fallout 3. |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 546 Joined: 27 Aug 2008 | I'm just gonna parrot other PS3 owners and say LittleBigPlanet. |

5? Not 7-8? Anyway I don't know why so many people say GTA IV (I know it's their opinion) because I haven't finished it because it was so boring. What is so good about Fallout 3? I saw a gameplay video and it didn't looked so good. Please tell me. I think Little Big Planet or Mirror's Edge is going to be the game of the year. |

Are we considering MMOs? If so then I nominate Warhammer Online. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 977 Joined: 25 Feb 2008 | Far Cry 2: I think it's going to look and play amazing, but be about 4 hours long and full of glitches until it gets patched. Fallout 3: If the game is half as ambitious as it looks then it's going to be plagued by bugs for the first few months of it's life, putting it into 2009 before it becomes a truly must play game. SSBB: Took the greatest fighter ever and made it slow, stupid and random, no. Gow2: Maybe, will depend on making both the multi and single player have a decent level of depth to them. Spore: Lololololol... GTA IV: A very good game, but taking away the toonish fun (and the aircraft, what the hell was that about?) and replacing it with Sims style life-styling scuppers it somewhat. MGS4: Another very good game, but it's really a very niche series that happened to have become extremely poular, a bit too inscrutable to be game of the year. Left 4 Dead: I think this will be it, given Valve's track record. It'll be updated and patched extremely quikly to sort out any balance issues/glitches. The genuine teamwork system is still pretty unique except for other Valve shooters and it will probably play extremely well. |

Game I've most *enjoyed* this year? Soul Calibur IV. Is it a good game? Not spectacularly. But it *was* exactly as good as i expected it to be and I enjoy making giant naked men do Xianghua's pose using the custom character options because I'm a weirdo. |

Yeah I don't see why Gears 2 is a contender either but there's a lot of hype for it and it's very anticipated so I guess it's just natural to call everything high-profile best thing ever. What? I just did that earlier too! Far Cry 2 and LittleBigPlanet. Anyway, it all depends on those review sites and what they go about saying is "best thing ever" - so far MGS4 and GTA IV seem to be the games that made critics wet themselves, and we're gonna wait and see which one gets that (dis)honorable title! Oh, and btw people, stop exaggerating MGS's cut scenes, it makes you sound like you didn't even get past the learning curve. It's not like we go around calling GTA IV a life simulator because the early missions suck and involve you buying clothes. |

You sir, win at life. |
Muckraker Posts: 247 Joined: 18 Oct 2008 | GOW2? I didn't think it was out yet? How can it be a contender if it hasn't even been played yet? |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1766 Joined: 11 Oct 2008 | First of all Gears of War sucked and anyone saying that it was innovative has been mind raped. Second i think that 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand will be by far the best game ever made! |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2859 Joined: 10 Mar 2008 | My GOTY Contenders; Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (If you joke about it's cutscenes, then you've clearly never played an MGS game and cannot appreciate any game for what it's worth) LittleBigPlanet Resistance 2 Grand Theft Auto 4 Fable 2 Gears of War 2 Fallout 3 Left 4 Dead (maybe, not sure) And i'm probably forgetting something. But LittleBigPlanet MUST win GOTY by whatever place we're talking about that's giving away GOTY awards. |

Like everyone who calls Psychonaughts or Braid innovative. They weren't, they were just . . . trippy. It's not bad, just not innovative. Gears of War introduced/refined some good concepts even if it fell far short of its potential. Keep in mind: innovation =/= good, no innovation =/= bad |
Muckraker Posts: 269 Joined: 24 Jul 2008 | I think it'll be either Gears 2, Fallout 3, LBP, or maybe Far Cry 2. Gears of War did not suck. It was supremely awesome. It innovated the cover system, and there was no other multiplayer like it. And it had a chainsaw on a gun. |

Copy Clerk Posts: 102 Joined: 17 Apr 2008 | top contenders will probably be MGS4, GTA IV, LittleBigPlanet, Fable II, Fallout 3 LittleBigPlanet should win for sheer uniqueness as well as being awesome
nah, that was given "a little above average" kinda reviews, not game of the year material unfortunately |
Muckraker Posts: 247 Joined: 18 Oct 2008 | MGS4 is one of the best games I've played (not watched) in a long time so I'm hoping it will win GOTY. |

Which concepts? Chainsaw murder? Swear words? If this games doesn't blow my mind and still gets the game of the year award over Little Big Planet or other game I'll throw a menacing sulk :\ |

I was only trying to add some Nintendo support... Most of the games being mentioned are for PS3/XBox360 and haven't even come out yet (and how is a metacritic score of 81% 'slightly above average'?! [that was a rhetorical question, not actually meant to start an argument, just a sense of disbelief at the current state of the reviewing system]). |

How about the cover system? The co-op based narative? Even the chainsaw bayonet (I know chainsaws have been in games before, but in Gears a plausible place in a futuristic military was made for them). |

well, i wasn't trying to start an arguement, i was just pointing out that, in my opinion, De Blob (although i think its a pretty cool game) isn't a game of the year sort of game. also, since its generally understood that "average" in the gaming world is actually 7/10,(yeah it really is rediculus [don't know how to spell it and im an A level student for English!] isn't it? oh wells) 8/10 really is "slghtly above average". and well, lets be perfectly honest here, Nintendo haven't exactly had a good year unfortunately... |

Left4Dead Looks promising and IF it is released by the end of the year then Mirror's Edge will most definatly win.
