Well, last night I gave in and bought a PS3.
The reason? Little Big Planet.
I've been holding out because I just couldn't justify the money.
Watched a trailer for LBP last night and within an hour I had forked out
the readies.

With the 360 it was Oblivion, the wii - Mario Galaxy, PS2 - Rez, Dreamcast - Dead or alive, Mega drive - Sonic, Snes - Super mario land, Amiga -Blood Money

What's been the "must have game" for other people thats caused them to buy a system?

N64: Super Smash Bros.
Gamecube: Super Smash Bros. Melee
Wii: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
DS: Advance Wars DS
GBA: Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire
PSX: Evil Zone (played it in my youth, now I'm looking for a secondhand PSX to play it on again, so good are my memories of the game)
SNES: Chrono Trigger (Would be if it wasn't coming out for DS)

These are all for me of course. Your mileage may vary.

PS: The term for such games is "Killer App."
PPS: I would totally buy a PS3 for LBP if it didn't cost so damn much.

Ninja Gaiden 2 made me consider buying an Xbox 360
I'm currently waiting for a decent 360 deal to appear before actually buying it.(I want at least 2 games to come with the console, NG2 not included)

Goldeneye made me want to buy a Nintendo 64
Resident Evil 4 made me want to buy a Playstation 2
Pokemon Red made me buy a Gameboy Color
Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony made me buy a PSP

DS: Advance Wars DS

Forgot about my DS, Advance wars was the deciding factor for me too.

Yeah I know but I never liked the term.

Xbox - KOTOR
360 - Mass Effect
Game Cube - Metroid Prime

all my other systems don't have such a clear "MUST GET THE SYSTEM FOR THIS GAME" game.

For my Xbox, I bought it to prepare for Halo 2 in August 2004. However, I did buy it along with a "Platinum Hits" copy of KOTOR.

For my Xbox 360, it was my hopes (eventually realised, yay!) for an invitation to the Friends and Family portion of the Halo 3 Beta test that triggered my purchase... but Gears of War and the Arcade were also on my mind.

I liked it, just bought it again for the PS3.
Some nice improvments too.
Not saying it's the best 360 game of all time, just the one that said to me "buy this system"

Mario and Halo have been the choices for the last 6 consoles (nes-360). PSP was for a mp4 player that could play GOW.

Agreed. I only had so much money, and couldn't afford the new PC rig it would have taken to run Oblivion like my 360 does. So I got a 360 and got Oblivion. And, even though I know everyone and their pet fish on this forum seems to HATE any console version of the game, I loved it. It's one of my favorite games on the system, if not my number 1.

And before the flaming begins, let's remember: To each their own, right?

Gran Turismo 4 was the game that made me buy a PlayStation 2 - I have never bought another game for it, with my other PS2 games coming as presents, or, as the second-hand PS2 that I bought was a replacement for a broken one, coming in the system tray (I got Tekken 5 because somebody from the store didn't remove it from the CD tray when they were testing it!).

SNES - Super Mario World
PSX - Tomb Raider (this games was really amazing in 1996)
PS2 - Shitty launch titles on this one, but I bought it with Ridge Raver V(?) just because
Gamecube - Got a deal from one of my friends (seeing RE:Zero made me want one though)
xbox360 - Ninja Gaiden II (loved NG:Black), also Mass Effect and Ass Creed, which both turned out to be huge dissapointments for me

I'm down with almost all of that, especially Crimson Skies, but GoW 3? Isn't that a bit weird? Not only is it not out, it's so far away. Granted, they'd have to work pretty hard to screw up GoW. Six months is a long time though (I'm going by the only rumoured release date I could find which is march 2nd in Europe) we basically know nothing about the game.

For PS3 God of War 3's confirmation of being exclusive, and me already owning a Wii and PC, instantly made me think "Ok, that's system number 3".

Speaking of the PS3, does "Blu-Ray player" also count as a system seller?

I got my N64 for super mario 64, but later discovered I really got it for Zelda
I got the ps1 to play the original GTA's, as well as final fantasy 7-9. It broke in two weeks
I got the xbox for halo, but in the end was more of a KOTOR junkie.
I got the 360 mostly for Oblivion, but also with the prospect of it being heavily supported. I was right!
I got the psp for the slew of old playstation games that were being made on it. I abandoned it after I finally lost my patience with it's poorly placed analog stick.
I bought the ps3 for mgs4. I ended up liking the system, but not with much thank's to that game.

Good choice with Evil Zone. I have that game and while cheesey it is also great. Can't really see your choice in all the Smash Bros references though, but like yous aid, those are for you.

for me:

NES: Zelda
SNES: MarioRPG / Zelda
GameCube: Eternal Darkness
Wii: Twilight Princess

Genesis: Sonic (though now it would be Landstalker)
Dreamcast: Sonic Adventure and Record of Lodoss War

Playstation: Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid
PS2: Metal Gear Solid 2 (and eventually 3)
PS3: MGS4 and GT4

Xbox: Don't recall why I got an Xbox actually
X360: Kameo / Oblivion / DOA4

Other systems I have and don't recall what Killer App got me to get them (that or they didn't have one and I got them for collectability) are:

Virtual Boy
DS
GBA
Nomad (technically a genesis)
Game Gear
PSP
Oddessy

Can't remember why I got a PS1/PS2 at the time, but I'll just say it was because I wanted to play their games.

For PS3 though, I got it for MGS4. And with LittleBigPlanet on the horizon, I think I made the right choice :D

My first 360 game was Oblivion, damn fine game. But I had Halo 2 before that, I really bought my 360 for Halo.

When I first got my Gamecube it was months before I got a memory card and a game besides Super Smash Bros Melee. But as it turns out Metroid Prime made that system for me, and Wind Waker and Super Mario Sunshine to a lesser extent. And my New Years tradition of an epic Mario Kart Double Dash playthrough, good times.

I bought a PS2 because i fell in love with tekken while playing it at a friend's house (i was actually playing tekken 3 there - my first purchase was tag). Best idea i ever had though because around that time i was getting into JRPGs (and then sorta got sick of the more unimaginative ones), other fighters. The silent hill series. Mmmm, good times.

Atari: Gift from parents
Nintendo: Gift from my great aunt so I'd stop pestering her every time we visted. Contra was my addiction of choice at that point.
---years later----
PS2: God of War/Devil May Cry
Xbox 360: Ace Combat 6
PS3: God of War 3...maybe...if I can borrow/rent the system I'll just do that. No sense wasting my money on a rig I'll only play once.
PSP: God of War/Ace Combat/rumored Devil May Cry(sensing a trend here?)
DS: Advance Wars DS (god this was such a waste of money, haven't touched my DS in a long time)
Fully loaded Sager 9262: Far Cry 2 :D :D :D
