On top of the concept for an American Revolution FPS, I would like to see one for:
1) The Napoleanic Wars (preferable one that allows you to choose any side) 2) From the point of view of a German soldier conscripted by the Nazis, probably on the Russian or North African campaign. (with added elements of, you have to act like you buy the hype, accomplish the mission, have some kind of charisma rating, and ultimately become an American, British, or Soviet sympathizer). 3) The Iran-Contra missions (nice jungle themed idea here) 4) The Bay of Pigs invasion (you go through as an American who is fucked on the initial insertion into Cuba and now has to fight to stay alive).
i think the german games get a slightly altered symbol instead of the swastika something like three lines or a box with four sections or something instead, so as has been said they dont really kill nazi's just badguy germans
Canadianwookie: The same thing as I mentioned before is happening to iraqis and afghans who are fighting to defend their homes from invaders, they're made out as terrorists, and we are led to believe they all had a part in 9/11. It's hard to justify a war, or a shooter video game, without a direct reason to be killing the bad guy.
But I still don't get why america hasn't made an american revolution shooter yet....Seems pretty obvious, and it could be fun.
Fire gun, watch bullet completely miss target and hit the helpless little drummer boy. Do minigame to reload, fire again, watch same process occur, rinse dry and repeat.
When you get close quarters you attack your bayonet, or draw a melee weapon and the true fun begins in duel style fighting to the death. (bludgeoning opponent with rifle butt, stabbing him in the eye with your bayonet etc) It could be a quite visceral, educating and exciting experience. Besides, who doesn't love themselves a good couple of English baddies, and some clever and sneaky Frenchmen fighting alongside the powerful and righteous american soldiers?
Surely not I.
That kind of game could, if done correctly, be very brutal... and would certainly be worth playing.

Actually WWII shooters are extremely popular in Germany. The Germans hate the Nazis more than anyone, because when most people thing Germany, the think Nazi.
... because I cant do it as a polish soldier. Its always the same damn courageous american parachuter, who single-handedly wins the war accompanied by herioic trumpet soundtrack. Id love to see a game picturing WW2 in much darker way like for example from the perspective of a polish underground resistance soldier or jewish upriser in Warsaw ghetto. Preparing ambushes, throwing molotov coctails at german tanks, assasinating nazi generals, freeing prisoners, while getting the feel of the city the action takes place in, instead of the "push forward" type of gameplay.

Even in Call of Duty WaW, Treyarch had to include a "Berlin" Level which makes absolutely no sense to me! The WWII ended 60 years ago-there are millions of movies, books and games about it-I just cant stand it anymore- I might play a WWII game as soon as I can play as Paul Tibbets dropping the "Little Boy", but freeing france and shooting germans became boring after a couple of years. Asking us germans about the Nazis is a little similar than asking every white american about the KKK or the My Lai massacre. How would you guys react if ppl all over the world would reduce your whole history to these subjects and ask the same stupid questions decade after decade?

I lived in Germany, and they played those games endlessly. I think it's pretty easy for them to see the enemies as a just-another-group-of-computer-villains, instead of historical figures

I asked my friend who is German he said he and most Germans don't mind killing Nazi's and quoted castle wolfenstein as a very popular game in Germany. They just don't like it if they themselves are called Nazi (obviously).

Incidentally, the swastika (as we now call it) is a very ancient Indo-European symbol that was found from ancient Greece to India and beyond. It has meant many different things to many different people. It's funny to see an ancient Greek black-figure vase covered in swastikas.

On topic(ish) I'm currently living in Plymouth (UK) which if you know your history was a significant naval base in WW2 and got bombed into the ground. The oldest buildings date from a few years after the end of the war and a lot of the older generation are still resentful. The exceptions to this are monuments such as the bombed out church we all go climb when drunk...
Now I have a German friend (and several German housemates) and he must have the patience of a saint. The one time I saw him lose his temper was in an enviromental psychology lecture talking about the building in plymouth and the lecturer (completely unfairly) kept making massive digs at the German people for the course of an hour talking about how plymouth's cultural stuff was lost etc etc eventualy my friend walked up to the front of the room said "Dresden" to the lecturer and left.
What I'm saying is things can be referenced too much.

..... possibly because developers think games set in the modern day world would be boring. If you made a game about the Gulf wars for example, you'd just play as a US soldier walking through a bunch of ruins with no enemies because most things that could moved has already been killed by air strikes. If you were lucky enough to find something still alive, you'd have no idea whether it was a terrorist or just a normal civilian anyway. Do you shot it or not? See, that's not as entertaining as killing Nazis now is it.
