Gone Gonzo Posts: 1588 Joined: 15 Feb 2009 | When I gained a bunch of weight (after a bout of medicine that screwed me up) I got a job at Wal-mart, which was the worst job I have ever had but, I gained one thing out of it. I did a lot of walking and I scheduled and better controlled what I ate. After some trepidation and sceptisism, I tried those health shakes. Just the generic ones and, y'know--they actually work. Mostly because with them you can keep track of exactly what you're taking in. And it helps shrink your stomach a little. You can drink them when you like and not feel guilty and--because they're generic, they're cheap. I lost 30 pounds just from regulating my eating with those and from walking a lot. Good luck! |

Construct a good eating plan, try to just cut down on junk, drink really cold water, and have smaller portions. For exercise for losing weight id suggest warming up with a variation of push ups, jumping jacks and crunches, and then some basic stretching followed by maybe a 30 minute jog. You should lose weight pretty quickly if you do all that and not overeat, also make sure you have a strong breakfast but a small dinner. if you cant help but eat alot, then add more excercises to your plan. Someone here recommended a wiifit, and its actually pretty good, I mean if it you use it right, dont cheat, and make sure you "feel the burn" as you do it. Its not the best, but it does work with patience. anyways good luck |

Muscle burns up calories quicker than normal flesh, so if you have more muscles, then the number of calories that you need to eat to maintain your current form per day increases, meaning it's easier to eat less calories than are necessary to maintain weight per day. If you drink any soda... ever. Stop it. Now. Drink water, it's good for you, and it has zero calories. That said, try to reduce your sodium intake as well, salt helps to absorb water, so the more salt there is in your diet, the more water your body will maintain, which will increase bloating. Daily exercise helps a lot as well. I'm really self conscious, so I can't go to the gym, but if you have the money to invest in some work out equipment for your home, whether its just a small set of weights, or a full out home gym, that will help a lot. This investment will help remind you that you're trying to lose weight, you'll probably be inclined to exercise more, and possibly even reminded to eat less when you get cravings (as we all do from time to time) to consume an entire tub of ice cream. And, with the daily exercise, it helps a lot if you do set up a routine, I exercise 20 minutes every morning, and 40 minutes every night about an hour or so before bed. And figure out something fun to do while you're exercising, If you want to chunk things into blocks that are divisible by 20 minutes, as I do, this can be very easy, because the average TV program, without commercials, is about 20 minutes long. I get shows that I like to watch on DVD and watch them while I exercise, jogging, doing sit ups, and weight lifting, etc... while I watch the TV. And, of course, you won't instantly lose the weight, if you built muscle, you may actually gain weight, however, you will look thinner, which, ultimately is the goal, and if you do build the muscle, it'll be much easier to keep the weight off. |

Begin leaning towards a high fiber diet, at least 1500Kcal a day still though. Wake up an hour early and go for a run BEFORE breakfast, this way you should be forced to start burning the excess fat quicker as there is no "fresh" energy to use. Do this at most 6 days a week. Swim, damn it swim, it's one of the few sports that have no impact damage and if you push yourself can burn up to 6-700 Kcal a hour, although, if you work that hard the longest you'll swim is a hour. Do this about 3 times a week. I'm studying up for a NVQ in gym training, you got any questions PM me. |

Eating a breakfast because it kick starts your metabolism. Anyway, you look lovely as you are ^^ but I doubt you'd take notice of me, lol. |

go swimming, it's real cheap, easy on the joints and a good work out as well as being fun. of course there is the problem that if you're heavier than usual, you may not be comfortable parading around in what are essentially tight fitting underwear. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1131 Joined: 3 Dec 2008 | I tried a Wii Fit and hated it. Not fun and not much of an exercise either. That said, when it comes to losing weight, you have to control what you eat. No (practical) amount of exercise will fix things if you eat whatever whenever. |

Awwwh you're not fat woman! :) My boyfriend has already told me I look fine as I am but I'm stubborn so I don't believe him. Anyways, thanks for all the help people :) I'll prolly talk to my dad about it at some point in the near future... |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 4581 Joined: 22 Jun 2008 | I would suggest getting a pulse/blood pressure checker if only for convience, that said I would suggest running slowly to reach the magical heart rate of 130-140BPM, this will be your golden zone where you're burning the most fat during exercising. 60% of your energy would come from stored fat.. Note: Exercise should also make you want to eat less and generally you would be happier. |
On the Record Posts: 5375 Joined: 10 Aug 2008 | You take a weight. You carry it around with you. You lose it somewhere. Profit? All the "oo magical weight loss" bullshit, is, in fact, bullshit. Just commit yourself to be more physically active and change your diet if it's needed - which doesn't mean eat less... you gotta eat in small portions 4-6 times a day. And don't overdo the whole exercise thing. A good amount of people will never look "thin" because of their body type. Some people will forever look like a stick despite even rigorous training. Some people will always look chubby even if they work out a lot and become really physically strong. Some people will stay muscular and look fit no matter what. Meh. |

When men do that, it's because they subconciously don't want you to leave him and therefor wants you to get fat enough so that you'll think you won't find someone better. In this case it didn't work (hooray!) so I suggest you kick him in the nuts for being such a jerk. Then join the army, which works for almost everybody. Seeing as you are going to university, that's not likely to happen. So I suggest a salsa course (or whatever hectic dance, really) because it's fun and doesn't make you feel like you're "working out". And walk places instead of using your car or bus ;) |

Copy Clerk Posts: 76 Joined: 6 Jun 2009 | Well cardio exercises like running alone isnt the most effective way.. You should mix the cardio with some weight-lifting or similar streght workouts for maximum effect, and of course watch what you eat. |

Wow, you gals and guys sure are weird. As for losing weight, I always find a good hiking trip to work. I lost 6 kilos (or about 12 pounds, so slightly less than a stone - what the hell, my brain hurts?!?) during my last trip without even trying. |

Huh. I'd thought that eating more, smaller meals kept the metabolic processes running throughout the day, increasing the amount of fat burnt. Obviously I'm no expert, but wouldn't the body, if it believed it was getting a constant supply of meals, be more likely to burn the reserves, as they're no longer necessary? I thought the body tends to jealously hoard any excess calories when it believes there are lean times ahead. |

Breakfast (You eat this whenever you get up), lunch (1pm, or whenever you're allowed lunch at work), dinner (6-8pm) and a snack. (after dinner for me but any time.) You spend at least 45 minutes a day exercising, but preferably an hour and a half. I did cycling for most of it, but extended this to badminton, swimming and using the gym. If you do something more intensive than cycling like running, you can cut the time in half. I used to exercise after lunch and after dinner, but it really doesn't matter when, as long as you get the time in. For breakfast you eat cereal with semi-skimmed or skimmed milk. No sugar. You can also eat a low-fat yoghurt if you like. Lunch is a sandwich with one filling. You don't put things like ketchup, salad cream or mayo on it. Use spread instead of fatty butter. You can eat what you like for dinner, but obviously things like salad, skinless chicken and fish are best. (no doritoes, surprisingly) Your snack is either a low fat yoghurt or a piece of fruit. You can drink fruit juice, semi-skimmed or skimmed milk, tea/coffee (no sugar) and water. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES CONSUME chocolate, crisps, sugar, fizzy pop (or flat pop if you like looking for loopholes), cake, ice cream or cream! Using this reasonably relaxed scheme you can lose a pound a week. I've heard of people losing more weight than that on different schemes, but this scheme is more sustainable, IMO. The problem with me is that I like lazing around the house playing games and eating takeaways. Thankfully I enjoy being active too. If I didn't, I'd be an absolute blob. |

Fastest/cheapest/best options: Get a bike, start riding. Motivations the hardest part, at college I would swim 5000m, run a couple of miles and ride my bike off road for several (never kept track) miles a week. The alternative was getting boozed or drugged or doing nothing, none of which appealed. It only cost me around £10 a week and made me super fit (I miss being super fit). By way of reference when doing that I weighed around 65KG and stood 6feet 4, I ate like a pig and ate all the things I shouldn't have, long duration cardio keeps weight away like nothing else. I'd recomend cycling or swimming, they aren't painful in the same way running can be and neither will knacker your knees and feet. Abusing your student card will make things cheaper and you can always join a Uni club when you get there to keep yourself going long term. It's way easier to keep motivated with like minded cohorts. Doing one or both for a couple of hours two or three times a week will drop weight very quickly. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1886 Joined: 11 Jul 2008 | All I'll say is all the pills, plans, diets, gadgets etc... IF any of them actually worked, consistently... for a reasonable number of people, I sense it would have been bought up by a big company, proven scientifically and then forced on us thru multimillion dollar advertising. Also remember that a huge number of people who start a gym membership don't go back after the first month or so, so if you're going to try that option, find one that's not going to lock you in to a long contract or a huge start up fee. If they're confident in their service, they'll be happy to take a monthly fee. For most people a good start is either just walking to work/school instead of taking the bus or train, or just getting off a stop or two earlier. The cardio advice is good, gentle exercise makes everything else easier. 20-30 minutes walking is a great way to start out without killing yourself with over exertion early on. Also, you'll get cravings for the bad stuff, don't deny yourself everything, just limit yourself to occasional treats in small doses, blocking out everything just ends in 3am ice cream binges. Note all this advice is from a big fat guy, but I know exactly what I'm doing wrong :D |

Press Junketeer Posts: 359 Joined: 16 Apr 2009 | Figuring out how to lose weight is unbelievably easy, but actually DOING it, can be next to impossible, good luck BTW, eat three meals, skipping a meal doesn't do you any favors, because your body goes into a conservative mode and your metabolism slows, and then you eat more at the next meal also, try to build a little muscle mass, as this will raise your resting metabolic rate and help you lose weight with no additional effort and for the people who say its easy, let me say: |

Drink orange juice and eat all bran for breakfast. Snack only once a day and eat all of your lunch and dinner, which should be healthy. Only drink Orange Juice, Milk and Water. Exercise, go for a jog a day, (or fast walk depending how large you are) and do as many sit-ups before bedtime as you can, and theres no slacking off, if you can still move up and down I don't care how much it burns. |
