Poll: Stargate Universe: Worst of the stargates?

 Pages 1 2 NEXT

Do you like Stargate Universe better than any of the other ones or is it **** on a **** sandwich? I dislike it because it lost the humour and wit and replaced it with an attempted serious plot, but the previous Stargates had a pretty serious plot, and were funny and witty. It may because it's just started, but it seems like it's sticking to the dark and depressing route. Tell me your thoughts, whether you think I don't get it or that I am your new god because I'm so right. In other words, disagree or agree?

You can curse on the internet.
It's not a big deal.

Anyway, I don't mind the DARK AND GRITTY kind of stuff, so I'm fine with it.

I haven't seen it yet, but I will see it ASAP. Hopefully it'll be good, and similar to SG-1.

Hm, haven't seen the last seasons of SG-1 and none of Atlantis.

But i get the feeling they want to copy the feel of the "New Battlestar Galactica" with "Universe". So far i am unimpressed, but will keep watching it for a while. Also.. they better give me some answers and some new questions. I want more mystery, but they also should keep solving some.

So overall it is ok...

It is pretty damn good, I think the acting is a little better and the plot is a little better but they KILLED A SENATOR! How cool is that!

I forget whether the rules said not to, so I just went the safe route.
So do you like it better than any of the others?

I'm enjoying it so far. Its new and different, a refreshing change from the normal format. I think its working well. And there have been bits tht made me laugh. Mostly coming from eli though

You will be disappointed.

The show is not however the worst.

The worst was Stargate Infinity. An attempt to make a Saturday morning cartoon for kids.

Don't remind me. The person who came up with that idea must've been bat-shit crazy.

You are correct x100, there wasn't even a story, it was a bunch of aliens fighting cat/wombat aliens.

I didn't like SG-1 after the whole Aurai (spell?) thing came in, whats cool about fighting etheral beings of superpowers. The Gouaould (spell?) were better enemies.

I dunno yet.
It's still really new.

I've seen the first 3 episodes now (pilot 1 and 2 and the first actual episode) and... yeah, it's the worst so far.

SG-1 was immediately awesome. Not much to say about it except that I preferred the non-Goa'uld episodes.

Atlantis, well, the sets were pretty crappy at first (at least Atlantis itself took some getting used to) but the characters were immediately more interesting and fun. It had a nice mix of jokes, action and mystery-stuff. I had at first considered the Wraith to be very bad enemies, but in later episodes they gained a lot more depth so I changed my mind on that.
In the end, I considered Atlantis to be superior to SG-1, by the way (don't hurt me).

Universe so far, well...
It's maybe too early to tell, but... I don't really like the characters much.
That computer specialist dude is okay, as is Doctor Rush. The others are meh.
The style is alright, I like dark and decrepit stuff so Destiny (the ship) is cool with me.
I don't like the large number of flashbacks, they just suck. And I don't enjoy the extreme emphasis on people's emotions.
I mean, come on! We had a few episodes focusing on people's family lives in SG-1 and Atlantis, but they weren't part of the main plot!
Now it seems more like a drama series from what I can tell.
I also don't like that so far the only problems they encountered were technical ones.
You know, kind of like Atlantis' shields being about to fail and so on. But in Atlantis, at least there was an encounter with the main enemy right in the pilot in addition to the technical problems.
I'll definitely watch a few more episodes because, well, the characters might grow on me or the story might begin to develop but so far I'm not too impressed.

I've never seen Infinity, so I won't comment on that, but the Aurai (or whatever, I think it was with an o) were okay, I like the whole plot with them and the ancients. The gouaould were good, but I think it got old after the 8 or 7 seasons where it was pretty much just them.

My and my brother both felt like we where watching the first episodes of Lost,i mean come on.The latest episode in which the Ship started to show off some of its capabilities and the story began to make sense gave me hope,i think it's better or should be better than atlantis story-wise,though i dont think it'll even try to be funnier than McKay or O'Neill.

It's okay. I prefer the other two, but I can't fault them for trying something new.

On a side note, does anyone else get a Battlestar Galactica vibe coming from SGU? If someone turns up as a half-replicator, so help me god...

Pet Theory: Stargate = Star Trek.

zat gun = phaser

Stargate SG-1 = Original Star Trek - exploring different planet every week
Stargate: Atlantis = DS9 - stuck in one location, something of a soap opera
Stargate Universe = Star Trek: Voyager - trying to get home from far away

e.g:

There is no parallel to Star Trek: The Next Generation as you can't have Picard's
diplomatic solutions getting in the way of laying C4 charges and firing P90s.

not quite ready to judge it yet. They dealt with two out of the three lame plot lines(power and air, last one's food), so I don't know what they have in store, for all I know it could be really interesting, but I don't know whether or not that is the case at this time.

Ive never been a fan of Stargate until Universe came out, and it's the only one I'll really watch. It kinda reminds me of Firefly, A.K.A. the greatest Sci-Fi show ever, so I definately like it better than the other Stargates.

I liked it myself. It has a more "serious" tone, but it's still good.

Crap.

It's the remade Battlestar (which was also crap) with teleporters.

It wasnt Senator Kinsey.

Don't much like Universe, SG1 and Atlantis were all about fighting the big bad and making the galaxy a safer place. In the first ep of Universe, W.T.F? Who dials a completely unknown address without knowing where it leads to? Go back to Earth, figure out where the co-ords lead to, put a ZPM in one of your cruisers and fly out there. JTFC! (see Team America for that one)

It's alright!. As far as Sci-Fi shows go it's not the best but it's not the worst either. It's too early in the season (5 eps) to call crap or not imo but so far it's dark and gritty. It has a space opera kind of feel to it, much like Battlestar Galactica, and in my book that isn't so bad.

For me the best things about the SG series compared to other Sci-fi are a) Theres always an under-current of humour as if they don't quite take it too seriously and b) the main group of characters are normally entertaining. This time the humour seems to be gone and the only likable characters are Dr Rush and Math Boy. Still going to watch at least till the mid-season break to see if it gets any better.

EDIT:

Skarin:

This is a bad thing in my book. BSG got on my nerves because it felt like if someone dared to crack a smile or make a joke, the ship would implode.

I rather like it, as the series is still very young and they are in somewhat amount of peril it's only natural for the characters to be very stiff, I hope that after the first few crisis' are over, it'll start to mellow out a bit.

SG-1 was great, until the got rid of Mcgiver, i mean o'neal er Michel dean anderson? then it got kinda lame
and so did the story
and it wasn;t funny
or compelling i was like who are these people? their not sg-1?
and atlantis was like ok atleast they shot first and asked questions later like it would be in the real world

I'm quite enjoying it, even if it reeks of Galactica. Rush currently is the only character I can empathise with. I mean he's the only person that's really trying to fix anything while the rest are sat around doing nothing... Although Rush is being a dick about not letting anyone help because he's the only qualified person. He's like a more stubborn McKay. But hey, the series is still young. It's enjoyable at least.

I'm holding out for a cameo from Daniel Jackson later on in the series. He was always my favourite character on SG-1.

yah, stargate sucks now. they killed what was a great series.

I see no option for my choice.

Evidently you haven't seen it.
THE PLANET WAS EXPLODING. If they'd dialled back to Earth they might've ended up blowing the place up.

Also;
ZPM required to gate to Pegasus galaxy.
Destiny is many galaxies away. Not enough ZPMs.
The planet that exploded was, essentially, a giant reactor. When it got attacked, ding ding, chain reaction, everybody off the exploding planet.

thats so impossible, i got up and went to bed right then and their. or at least i would have if i wasn't going to make my self stay up and watch sanctuary.

Am I crazy or wasn't the first season of SG-1 relatively dark? I mean we had Daniel brooding over his wife being taken by the Goa'uld, we had Kawalski get killed, the third episode or so was about the leader of an SG unit who goes crazy and convinces the population of a planet that he's a god and we have Teal'c and his quest to liberate his people.

Really most of the humor I remember from season one was Teal'c and O'Niell and their straight man/funny guy relationship.

I'll hold judgement on whether SGU has lost the humor of older SGs but I'm enjoying it for now. Good scifi is good scifi after all.

Oh and to those of you saying they're 'focusing on emotion too much' or whatever. Deep characters are never a bad thing, period.

I have ambivalent feelings about the whole Stargate franchise. While I enjoyed SG-1 ... some of the time, I was only really watching it at the end because Ben Browder and Claudia Black were in it. That having been said, I thought Stargate Continuum was really good and with a bit of extra polish could have made a half decent cinema release.

Atlantis on the other hand I gave up watching. I just really didn't get on with it - mostly down to the characters.

Universe I'm enjoying so far, I think its exactly what the Stargate franchise needed, something fresh and new. Atlantis was too much like SG-1, so something - hopefully - completely different will be good. Yes it is quite a bit like BSG, but thats no bad thing. BSG was probably the best television since Farscape and Firelfy. However it is still very new and could start boring me very quickly like Warehouse 13 did.

Uncompetative:
Pet Theory: Stargate = Star Trek.

Stargate SG-1 = Original Star Trek - exploring different planet every week
Stargate: Atlantis = DS9 - stuck in one location, something of a soap opera
Stargate Universe = Star Trek: Voyager - trying to get home from far away

I came to the same conclusion ... sort of. I had the original film = Star Trek,
SG-1 = TNG (basically the same thing with a different cast),
Atlantis = DS9 (same basic idea but with a different cast in a stationary location) and
Universe - Voyager (lost in space).
They also both had very bad animated series, and Stargate sort of also has a film series as well.

I like it so far. It's not like the other Stargates, but there's no rule saying it has to be. It's good for what it is.

But this is the internet and we have to compare it to everything else, so let's get started, shall we?

-It doesn't have Claudia Black in it as the Stargate equivalent of a Mary Sue, so it's automatically better than the last two seasons of SG-1 which I refer to as 'Farscape SG-1'.

-Stranded far from home like Voyager, but so far the characters haven't gone out of their way to destroy or avoid anything that might potentially return them home, so they're doing better than Voyager in that regard. Also, like the other Stargates there's less focus on nonsensical pseudoscience and no one has reversed the polarity yet, so big props for that.

-Battlestar Galactica....hmm...don't really see that. Character interaction is more like Lost anyway. Rush as Baltar - I'll give that one to you, but at least Rush actually started out with some redeeming qualities and has that nice little thing called motivation, not visions in his head telling him to do stuff.

-Oh, another thing that sets it apart from SG-1 and Atlantis: no token alien characters. No Teyla, no Teal'c, no Ronon, and no gum-popping, hair ribbon wearing, unlikeable and obnoxious alien witch with absolutely NO REASON TO BE THERE

But if I was going to be extremely harsh in my comparisons to the other Stargates, I'd say my enjoyment of Universe pales in comparison to the first two seasons of Atlantis and the first eight seasons of SG-1. Probably the main reason being that I can't bring myself to really care about any of the characters. Rush and Scott are okay I suppose, but the others range from underdeveloped (T.J.) to completely unlikeable (Greer).

I'll give it a season. If it keeps going like it is, I'll probably watch it. If it gets worse, I can always do something else with my time.
