s0p0g:

but if i could choose the person...

I'd pay to do it in that case...

There are some people that really do just need to die.

I Reckon the U.S. Military would win the bid for the button pressing rights mind you.

Well about 146,000 people per day but I doubt I'd have a good chance of picking off a 90 year old with cancer as apposed to a father with 3 mouths to feed.

Plus, only $100? You cheapskate... I want 1 million like in the movie.

I would push it every time I'm low on cash. But only if their money comes to me. I don't want to fuck up world economics.

I'd press it twice.

Wait a minute, $100 are useless to me in the UK. What are the exchange rates for the button?

Wait, the button kills people AND I get money?

Sweet! The button would be broken before I'm done.

take it to the post office. You'd get about £60 for $100. That's not the full exchange rate, but they charge to exchange money. Not that it'd matter, you could just make more.

If I could choose the person, then yes I would, as there are lots of people the world would be better without.
If I couldn't choose, but the value was better, say £1,000,000, then I would, because I could save more lives with £1,000,000 than the random one that was lost.

But, if it was random and only $100, then no, I wouldn't.

I would, numerous times.

quick question though, is said button like a turbo button, keeping it pressed down continuously give you $100 at the same time killing people at the same rate?

if so, ill just use some tape, hopefully I wont die because of it [if I do, Richest man dead!], because then no one would be able to remove the tape, and humanity would become extinct.

and nothing of value would be lost.

In actuality if I was faced with this decision I'd only push it once, wince take the measly amount of money and feel guilty for the rest of my life and try and research all the people that died that day and try and figure out for the rest of my life who I killed and if they deserved it. During the course of my life, I'd probably push it a couple more times thinking it's the snooze button on my alarm and then finally on my deathbed I'd tap it rapidly for as long as could taking out as many as I could as I left this world.

What's the number of people born in 1 second?

roughly 3-4? how many die? 1-2?

So that makes it roughly 1 extra person a second.

Given that you can't press that button every second 24/7

I say do it for 5 hours a day?

Stop when you have about a 100k, short on a stock.

If you make money, yay you have millions.

If you lose money, go back to that button and repeat.

Push it once more! Everyone else is doing it!

I wouldn't push it if I knew someone was going to die. If I found out that it killed people after the fact I would probably have given myself a nice hefty fee to get through college, but that's under different circumstances.

Why is it that every time a thread gets started that basically asks "Would you consciously and willingly commit murder?", the majority of the posters publicly admit being mass murderers if given the chance?

I'm not sure if I should be worried or amused.

Some form of reward doesn't seem to influence the response much. Punishment a little more... fascinating.
Would you still press said that button a bazillion times if then chance of killing yourself increased exponentially with each push? Self-preservation above all else, yes?

And no, I do not believe in pushing buttons. I will them into pushing themselves. I wash my hands in innocence.

How exactly does this "Horrible death" occur? Do they just stop, suffocate and fall over? Do they get attacked by a cougar? What?

Since about 1/2 of the population lives in China, India and Africa, and people die there all the time, I wouldn't feel too bad if I clicked it once or twice a week for 40 years. As I see it, I wouldn't even know/care to know who dies as they would be out of sight and out of mind.

Wow, I am a dick.

Is this aboot that stupid movie coming out?

Well, it was a stupid short story and a stupid Twilight Zone episode before it was ever a movie.
I feel the need to tell people that.

For $100 a person? Nah.
Now, maybe if it was $1,000...

Not to mention a creepy YouTube video.

And no, I wouldn't.

Sure, why not, the planet is over populated as it is, what a great little device for thinning it a little bit.
I'd have to limit my usage somewhat though, certainly not more than 50 people a week.

Edit: I suppose I would also be influenced by what the death was like. If it was quick and painless to the individual, then sure.

Now I wouldn't believe a button could actually determine a random value; as any decision would involve some form of bias unless it uses some magic. I don't believe in magic, so essentially I'd stand there arguing semantics with the button until I could be transported to a mental hospital.

$100 isn't enough honestly, but I might push it if they could prove to me it would result in the reward because I cannot envision an omnipotent being with the will to kill randoms. Most likely no.

Trust me theres more than 700,000,000,000 dollars in the world. You couldn't push it more times than that because you'd be dead.

Yes and however many times I need to. Assuming I can come back to said button whenever need be.

But right off the bat, I would say about 3000 times.

I'd push that damn button 'til my finger bled, and hope that the people who died were animal / child / woman abusers or at least deserved to drop dead. Not that I'd feel any guilt if they weren't, but I'd hope.

I would most certainly not actively kill people anywhere for 100 $, or 1.000.000 $ for that matter, even if certain it could not strike me or anyone I knew, nor lead to any punishment.

On the other hand, I apperently have no problem at all spending copious money on PS3 games while millions of children starve to death in some distant place, so I'm certainly not some goody two-shoes savior type. But actively harming people for money is definately not my thing, I'll leave that to people who are presumably reminiscent of the German WW2 administrative "desk killers" from the Holocaust (named so for signing away millions of lives on a whim from comfortable desks far away from the actual slaughter). Who cares if your mirror is polished platinium if you can't stand the person it shows.

You really should have left it at a million dollars, like the movie you got this from. Thing is, unless you're crazy, no way is a hundred bucks worth a human life, but a million dollars, that is actually a serious decision. A billion dollars, and nobody would hesitate, and a thousand (or a hundred as you've said) and nobody would consider it. But a million dollars? That one's a bit more difficult.

As to the topic, as it is worded in the OP, no, no pressing from me. Again, offer me a million bucks, and I might just think twice about it.

I would not kill a random life without hesistation for a billion dollars, let alone a million. You seriously lack trust in human morality. Money is corrupting, and I couldn't ever simply press it once. I'd have to keep pressing it, and become consumed by my own greed.

I also see maybe doing it if the world became overpopulated. I could kill off a few assloads of random people and use the money to help cure something, or donate it, or whatever. It's a dark plan, but overpopulation will eventually kill us all if we don't stop it.

Although, that sudden income of money might be suspicious, so I think I'd get caught.

Yes, I do. People, including yourself, are not as moral as you think. You say that, but with an amount like a billion dollars in front of you, chances are you wouldn't be so sure.

I could do it for 100 pounds.
100 times, so I could pay for my student loan.

EDIT: oh wait, I need to pay for the accomodation too...
