How many of these threads have to be made before you get it through your skulls that human life is intrinsically worthless?

I'd press it exactly 80,000 times, giving me a total of $8 million which should allow me to live quite comfortably until I die.

If each life was worth $1 million, I'd press it 8 times.

That's all I need, that's all I want.

I would not dare. What if the person i was killing happened to be friends or family. No, not a good idea to press the button. I would prefer to earn my money the hard way. WORK!

There isn't enough money on earth for me to push it enough times.

Trust me theres more than 700,000,000,000 dollars in the world. You couldn't push it more times than that because you'd be dead.

Oh, i'll do it. Just you wait and see.

Seriously, don't make threads about Twilight Zone episodes. It's wrong.

Anyway, yeah, push the button. Helps to stave off overpopulation problems.

I love how nobody has a grasp on either economics (too many people dead immediately would crash an economy), the sudden suspicion you'd arouse by suddenly receiving tonnes of money all at once with no explanation for where it comes from (you couldn't admit you were being paid for button pressing and simultaneously killing people), or the laws of chaos theory that mean that even if it's only people you'd never have heard of who die, there's still the possibility it would indirectly affect you.

I'd push it as many times as I can. Not only am I in need of money fast, I also have a very disturbing tendency to kill people, in this way, I'd be able to relief my wants.

I would not push the button from fear that it would kill my family or friends, or their friends. If it was guaranteed that none of these would die, I still wouldn't push the button. Suddenly acquiring a buttload of money? The only reasonably explanation for that is theft. If that was not a problem either, I would push the button. A great many times, because the world is grossly overpopulated.

It's a button. I'd push it repeatedly no matter what it did. Especially if it was red.

Can anyone point out the contradiction in terms?

what contradiction? life is objectivly worthless.

so......

I would push the button until......my arms get tired. Then i'd use my (o(K. then my legs, then just fall on it, after all the world is grossly overpopulated........Hey! it says we get money too!

I think i would end up pushing the button 6,000,000 times, that, by averages should at least account for 5,499,998 morons. the other 500,002 would be an acceptible sacrifice. Mildly misanthropic of me i know

I would push it 6,838,770,834 times.

Well then, you'd be the richest motherfucker on the planet but you'd be all alone too.
And what would be the point of having all that money when you can just walk into any store and take whatever you want since no one is going to be around to stop you?

Me? Well, I'd press it whenever I would need the money which would be in the neighborhood of once or twice a month...depends on if a hot videogame is coming out though. *looks at calender and eyes 11/10/09*

If you actually did the killing yourself, you'd probably get more than $100 from the person.

So no. I would not.

So here's the scenario. I give you a magic button. Every time you push this button a random person on Earth dies a horrible death, and you get $100. Would you push it? If so, how many times?

Personally, I would not. Even though I would not get caught, I don't think I could deal with the guilt of knowing I was responsible for somebody's death. So, what about you, Escapist?

WOOOOOOW you got that from the movie "the box" (which is based off the short story "button button")

If I could die, then no. My luck is bad enough that I'd kill myself on the first press.

If I can't die from it, then hell yes. I would push that thing like there is no tomorrow. I'd probably wind up cutting the Earth's population in half. Make myself rich, and cut at least 70% of humanity's current day issues out of the picture.

Can it be in pounds please?

I'd do it a few times out of curiosity, and then whenever I needed the money.

I feel like I belong in this thread.

But I wouldn't press it as I'd rather earn my money I mean it's only a 100 bloody bucks.

Seriously, the moral aspect of it is all fail! The box couldn't possibly work in the first place & people die whether you push the button or not.

So why not make some money off some gullible sap?!

Bad logic. The people that would die are dying anyways. You're not substituting those deaths, you're adding onto them. That's like saying "people get shot to death all the time, so why shouldn't I shoot you?".

Ah..you've introduced a new variable.

People do die all the time...at a rate of 2 per second. These deaths are caused by anything, from still-births to old age, murder, genocide, accidents etc. One thing that is NOT mentioned in the initial argument is how these people will die. Will they be killed by an assasin? Will they simply stop breathing at the press of the button? Is it truly random or predestined?

Nobody has mentioned anything about shooting. If I was told that by pressing the button, an assasin would gun down an innocent somewhere in the world, that puts a slightly different slant on things...but that still would not be me pulling the trigger. It's the moral decision of the assassin if he wants to take part in this experiment, which isn't so much about human morality, but more about whether we are gullible or not.

As I said in the other bit of my post (the one that you didn't quote, or perhaps didn't bother reading), I do not believe that the button would kill anyone. Whether I pressed the button or not, people would still die. I wouldn't be adding to anything in the grand scheme of things. It's a question of whether you actually believe that the button would actually kill anyone, and I have stated without any question, that I don't!

You may disagree with my morals, but then again, I wouldn't send anyone off to war, or put anyone in a dangerous situation where their life was endangered. Politicians, Generals, and fanatics do it all the time! Yet for some reason, we accept their decisions...maybe even applaud them for making those decisions! All I would be doing by pressing the button would be to defy the scientist's criteria, and get some money for applying a bit of sense to the scientific setup.

I'd press it once, feel bad for awhile, then decide I need money and do it once more.

Slowly I'd press it more and more regularly as long as people around me didn't die and I didn't see the effects of what I'm doing. Eventually I'm pressing it a few times every hour and living a life of luxury until as I press the button someone I love dies and all the possessions around me and everything I've had from the button are not worth the loss of their life. But there is nothing I can refund or do for their life back, and my life from then on in will be filled with an intense and unbearable guilt.

Even if I knew exactly this would happen, I would still press the button once and thus still fall down the slope of pressing it more and more.

I'm a greedy selfish bastard.

I would just keep pressing the button until I die if I, push the button on earth, but if it's possible I'd go to some space station first and the keep pushing the button until there's noone left, then I'd push it again to see what happens. (I'd do it for free too.)

No, I would not. I have seen many different scenarios of this. One were the man went to hell for pushing it, as it was a test.

Hint: Hell is fiction.

To you maybe. I am personally a religious man

Nobody is worth 100 dollars. That is even less in GBP.
Screw that. I'd dismantle the mechanism.
