Basically I CANNOT handle anyone/thing touching my neck, I literally freak out, its weird as...
When my school was having their graduation ceremony, I couldn't look up during the whole time i was on stage as i was imagining someone coming up behind me and slashing my exposed throat :(
I dunno, is this a legit phobia? And who else has those quirky fears?

that's really odd. maybe too much time spent as a sniper in team fortress?

i don't think it's a legit phobia as i'm sure the definition of such is a crippling fear that inhibits normal life.

Try immersion therapy...get a scarf. I guess it's legit, who would really have the right to tell you it isn't? I don't really have any quirky fears of my own, I don't like wasps...that's about it.

Personally my fear atm is of the wind at night. I don't know why. There's just something very unsettling about the wind rustling through the trees in the dark and drowning out all other noise. I always get paranoid that something that I can't hear is going to get me.

Meh, maybe it'll go away :)

(Also, if I saw a panda with guns that would be my new fear probably.)

Not odd. I have this too. And at one point I had severe globus hystericus due to it. If you haven't got that then be thankful.

Its root (at least in my case) was an absolutely dreadful fear of being unable to breathe. Even thinking about it makes me start gasping.

You call that "strange"? It's completely normal! Expectable, even. Don't forget that your neck is absolutely vital for a great number of reasons. So fear of something bad happening to it is normal. Fear of someone even touching it is a little overblown, but still. Nobody wants to get strangled,or literally lose their head.

Truth be told,i don't like when someone touches mine either.

My irrational fear is that a giant platypus will see me in my underpants.

That's just a fear of vampires.

For what it's worth, i also have an irrational fear of axe wielding psychopaths.

My mum once interviewed a teenage girl who had a morbid fear of elbows.
Everything is a legit phobia, dude. Regardless of how irrational.

Anyone who DOESN'T fear an axe-wielding psychopath is either made entirely of badass, or has no survival instinct.

Well, to the OP, it's not weird at all. Usually I dislike people touching my neck too... especially if I'm not expecting it, I tend to just spaz out.

Nope, phobias are basically irrational fears. An acute phobia would ruin your life but I can live with mine, (crustaceans) without any real problems.

Interestingly, my other great fear, (dentists) isn't a phobia because it isn't irrational. Dentists do cause misery and pain to others. As do axe murderers.

I have a phobia of the stove and indeed all forms of gas appliances. No matter how many times I watch someone else do it and get told how perfectly safe it is I just keep freaking out because I'm always afraid its going to overload or the gas will leak and I'll get blown up. I just can't avoid that phobia and I can never cook on the stove without trembling thinking I'm about to blow up... I mean once the thing actually did catch fire and I was so scared. I don't get it, I'm a grown man (by which I mean I am eighteen) but I'm still afraid of the stove.

A phobia is defined as an irrational fear. So I think the OP's example counts.
EDIT: Ninja'd. Damn you, Master!

You're weird.

OT: I have a serious fear of wasps. Mainly due to there being a nest of the bastards above my room when I was a kid.

i dont know if its weird or not but i got a nice little upgrade to the fear of heights thing..
iam not afraid of heights like regular fear but if i go to a ledge or anything of a 3+ meter high building and look down i have this annoying feeling that some "douche bag" is going to come up behind me and push me down..... i think this counts as paranoia tho...not sure

I'm like that, but with my ears.
When people are brushing my hair, if they even touch my ears I freak out.
Nibbling ears is supposed to be romantic. Not for me!

I have a similiar phobia about my bellybutton. It seems like an obvious weak point, waiting to be punctured by anyone. Why? Because they don't see it as a big deal and may rip out my guts playfully unaware of the hazard only I seem to take seriously!

When i was younger I had like a half-dozen phobias. Wasps were one beause of 9 stings i got after finding a nest. I jumped and they got into my clothes D=

I'm mostly fine atm. Though I've never been drunk cause I've got a phobia of what I'd say or do.

That's an odd phobia but I've heard worse. There was a woman who was terrified of aluminum foil for some reason and when she was on a TV show, they chased her around with it. She was screaming the entire time and running behind chairs.

I hate to say it, but it was kinda funny.

And, as for me, I have a serious fear of clowns. But not fear like most phobias where I will run and hide or just freak out, I usually have a violent reaction to them.

I was at a kid's birthday party when I was about 8 and they had a clown and I tried to get away from him but he kept coming up to me and then I stabbed him in the shin with a pencil.

Wasps, always wasps. Mostly this extends to bees as well, and I'm generally not keen on insects, but only the stingy ones actually scare me.

I've got vertigo. Not so weird, but at least I can exploit it so even if I lean far enough back on my chair I get a sudden rush of terror. If I control that, though, massive adrenaline rush for almost no reason, which is always good for livening up dull moments.

I have an irrational fear of psychopaths in general, although I find knife wielding psychopaths to be the most scary as you can't tell where the knife will be hidden and how many he/she/it is concealing.

Anyway, I dislike people touching me anywhere from behind, especially the neck/shoulder region, but wouldn't call it a phobia for me. My main phobia is elevators.

I have that same fear and it's a legitimate one. I hate being touched on the back/neck by anyone. I think it comes from when I was younger when the school bullies would grab me from behind and try and kick the shit out of me. I HATE being snuck up on. I always sit facing the door. Thurfir Hawat would be proud

I knew a chap who was afraid of copper for some reason. it made him pukey to look at it or smell it. When the currency swapped to euros a few years back he had a rough time with small change.

I fear sour milk. Or rather every time I drink milk I check it for being sour. I am fucking interminable to live with.

I always had that fear of heights thing. So I jumped off a 50 foot cliff (into water) and went parasailing. It really helped and I would recommend it to anyone. I still kind of get those moments but usually in huge shopping malls where the perspective is so weird.

It's not that odd a fear when you think about some of the things that other people are afraid of.

I know a few people scared of balloons (don't know why...) and one of my ex's was terrified of people in scuba masks. Honestly.

Okay. This is pretty much 100% impossible.

So.......... a domestic gas supply system rates gas on a few different specifications (Wobbe no., LHV, HHV etc.) anyway basically the flame that can come out of the line is set based by that no. and the standard nozzle sizes of appliances hooked up to the system (ovens, stoves etc.) So the flame is fixed. i.e. as long as your gas distributor stays on specifications (which they will and even if they didn't there are usually multiple feeds into the network which balance each other out and fines impossed on companies that fall outside the specifications range too far or too often etc.) the flame size coming out of your oven will fall within a small band of heights. (So when you turn it on this giant fireball will NEVER occur)

Also because gases are compressible, you need a lot of gas is a very small space, (or conversely, in an open system the gases quickly disperse), you need a closed system to cause enough gas to build up for it to be dangerous (i.e. the movie thing where you leave one of the stove gas thingies on and fill the house with gas and then 20 minutes (probably longer, as most domestic gas lines are under pretty light pressure) later light a match and BOOM = pretty much real) BUT if you have windows open etc. etc. or you are just turning your oven on then this will never ever ever happen. Then, if you were dumb enough to do that, when you walked into your house you would smell domestic gas as they add trace components (probably H2S or mercaptans) to it to stop this happening.

i.e. if you can't smell gas everywhere then there is a < 0.00000000000000000000001% chance that the level of gas is high enough.

What is much more dangerous is high pressure gas tanks, like those you see outside petrol stations and on fuel tankers etc. as the weak point is always in the head of the tank and whicher way that is facing is the way it will fly (and it will go 100's of metres VERY fast if it does burst - which again is HIGHLY unlikely, but for sake of comparison to an oven it is more likely to happen) so if your house is near a petrol station make sure their tanks face vertically and not horizontally.

:D
