That one isn't necessarily a bad phobia though. I have a phobia of being left alone, but I think that that is normal for most people. |

Used to be damn bad though I would avoid going outside like the plague as a kid. Has night terrors for a period aswell but they passed rather quickly thankfully. |

A girl at my university has a neck fear too. It's kind of an odd one to see, especially as during the rehearsals for one of our plays, there was a scene where her character got hugged and someone accidentally touched her neck in the process... She ended up slapping him out of sheer reflex. Personally, I have a phobia of needles, but only when I know that someone's planning to come at my with them; other times I'm fine (sewing etc). It makes getting splinters out a bit tricky... Other stuff I don't like, but I don't have a phobia of (boats, blood and excess gore, etc). |

So is being attacked by a 20 foot crab (Yes, I have seen THAT video), but it still terrifies me. Phobias are totally irrational, and explaining them away doesn't work. :) |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1121 Joined: 22 Nov 2008 | Is a phobia defined as a fear with NO rational cause, or one where it can have a rational cause, but is exacerbated far beyond that of a normal response? |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 4071 Joined: 23 Dec 2008 | I have a fear of food I haven't tried before. People assume I'm just picky, and while that's partly true a lot of it is genuine fear. And the neck phobia... I used to have something like that. I still dislike people toughing it immensely, I just don't fear it any-more. |

It's an irrational fear, but that can be of a rational cause. Arachnophobes loathe killer spiders as much as garden spiders. |

Infamous Scribbler Posts: 587 Joined: 17 May 2009 | That seems just a little too spacific to be a phobia in the general sense since I doubt many other people would have exactly the same thing. Aphenphosmphobia would be the closest thing since it is a general term for a heightened sense of a need for personal space and utter fear of physical contact. There are other names for it too (aphephobia, haphephobia, haphophobia, hapnophobia, haptephobia, and haptophobia) but they're all similar. If you're good at Latin, I'm sure you could add the word for neck somewhere in the name and make it look official. |

If it makes you feel any better, I used to work with a guy who was the same way. He told me he would sleep with his hand around his neck to keep it "protected" |

Paperboy Posts: 24 Joined: 9 Sep 2009 | That's odd... But hey it's a legitimate fear so I feel for you man. Shame too, because the neck is pretty sensitive... |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 3794 Joined: 3 Feb 2009 | Don't worry about it. It's certainly unusual, but it's nothing to be concerned about. A lot of people don't like being touched from behind or around that area, it makes them naturally sort of wince and close up. You might hate it more than others, but this isn't a cause for alarm, just understand that is what is going to happen to you and be ready for it. |

When I was REALLY young, my mom ran over a hornet's nest with our lawn mower and they chased us into the house and bit me and my whole family for 10 minutes straight. For years I thought it was a swarm of bees, plus it was around the same time that movie came out with Macaulay Culkin's "My Girl" came out, the one where he gets killed by a swarm of bees (I didn't know he was allergic in that movie). So yea, bees. I got the fuckin' creeps just thinkin about them. I wouldn't call it a phobia, anymore, but there was a time if a bee was somewhere I wouldn't even stand near it. Immersion therapy does the trick tho, ever since when I'm near a bee I just stand perfectly still, and a couple times they've landed on me and crawled around and I've had to stand still and not scream. |

For some reason I am afraid that they are going to pull my nails off or shove something up them. No professional manicures or pedicures for this girl. Edit: I also have an intense fear of water/boats/drowning and spiders. Yay, go me!! |

Does your phobia of water have any kind of size limit to it? I'm fine in the shower or bathtub, but put me near a swimming pool and I get chills. Anything larger and I start to panic. Me + Boat + Ocean = Total Flipout and most likely a capsizing :P |

Muckraker Posts: 251 Joined: 15 Sep 2008 | I'm just claustrophobic, not as bad as I once was though I used to be terrified of locking toilet stall doors in case it wouldnt open again and I would be trapped. Same with elevators and the squash courts at school as they didnt have conventional handles they had like ring-pulls. My friend absolutely hates having her nose touched at all by anything. She said its something to do with being closed in or constricted. I found out the hard way when for a joke I went "POP" and lightly tapped her on her nose and she flipped out. |

im not as bad but yes im not keen on my neck being touched. If someone puts their hands near my neck i squirm and move away. If my hair covers my mouth in the wind i feel like i can't breath or if it wraps around my neck i choke. |

Pfa! I laugh at your "axe wielding psychopaths"! In fact, they're so cliched that these days they're hardly even let into the Union. I'm a kitchen knife kinda psycho - it's not cliche, it's just classic. Plus it can slice through tendons on back of ankles/knees better than an axe. I have a fear of being kicked out of my Psychopath Union for killing other psychopaths. It's not allowed, so don't go telling! |
