A few months back, The Escapist reported on how Venezuela was moving to ban all "Violent" videogames. Here' the article, if you haven't read it.

Anyway, they actually went through with it, and have banned all "violent" video games. Only not just violent ones, but all of them, really. Mario would be considered to violent according to this new law (if a game about a penguin using snowballs to defend himself is too violent, then Mario is too violent). Here's an article.

This next article is written by a Venezuelan gamer who might very well be fined, jailer, or "mysteriously dissapear" soon because of thisd article. The article might also vanish, so, while the link is right below this, the spoiler box has the entire thing copy-pasted.

Note that some of the essay is a bit awkwardly worded, as English is not the authors first language.

Now, I don't need to ask what the general consensus of opinion will be on this. I think I already know (general outrage).

So... what now?

Really. What now? The author was quite explicit about his desire and plans to continue playing despite the laws, but that might get him eventually killed so... yeah. What now, specifically for Venezuellan gamers?

I do ask that you mirror this on other sites you might go to that haven't yet covered this, so that it can't "mysteriously" vanish.

Edit: I wasn't sure where to put this, as it is about gaming, but, more than that, it's really about the laws of a nation, so I put it in off-topic. If it should be in a different section, Mods/Admins, please move it!

Well,it's Hugo Chavez. As we all know,Chavez is not exactly the brightest politican completely batshit insane. Will anyone try and disagree with me?

Oh,and he is definetly compensating for something.

Well,it's Hugo Chavez. As we all know,Chavez is not exactly the brightest politican out there. Will anyone try and disagree with me?

No, no-one will try and disgree with you.

What really makes the essay hit home is that it wasn't written by a journalist, but by some average dude, which makes it feel more personal.

Also, that guy is the definition of hardcore, gaming despite it being illegal.

Qaddafi > Hugo Chavez > All

Does this mean that Anonymous are going to try the same bs they tried no the Australian Govt?

If this law sticks maybe someone should do a scientific study of the numbers of murders that occur afterwards.

I'm not saying that all gamers are blood-crazed murderers held in check by the violent game of their choice, but violent games are stress-relievers.

I have a hard day at work, I come home and slaughter mutants/zombies for a few hours.

There is very little that we can do. Unless us, as gamers, want to use our practice at fighting from FPS and tactical knowledge from RTS to declare war on Venezuela. The government wont listen to us, maybe we could try to pressure the UN into sorting them out but I highly doubt that the UN will listen to us anyway, and if they did, what could they do? I highly doubt that Venezuela would like other countries looking into it's business. I don't really think that there is anything we can do unless one of us happens to be in a seat of influence and control other a powerful country.

Yay fascism! (Sorry, couldn't think of any more to say. That's... about all there is to say, without bashing pretty much 90% of corrupt governments in South America and incur the wrath of hippies.)

Woah, A place with stricter game laws than Australia? No way....

Spasticeagle:

I didn't think it was possible either...
I feel sorry for the people who can't play pretty much ANY games now... well i wonder... is tetris considered violent somehow? if not at least they have one awesome game still available to them!

This leads to my theory that Hugo Chavez and Michael Atkinson are the same person. Have you ever seen them together?
