Serial Experiments Lain is my favorite anime show of all time and it was only 13 episodes.
Ergo Proxy is also freaking awesome and that was 26 episodes.
Gundam The 08Th MS Team was one of my favorite mecha shows until Gurren Laggan.
Paranoia agent was great though confused me at the end a bit.
Baccano! is also one of my personal favorites.

Bare in mind I consider 26 episodes average length.

FLCL: Not going to beat it, six episode, tight storytelling and it's fun.
Armitage III: The first OAV is four episodes.
Black Lagoon: Each season is only 13 episodes long and consists of several short story arcs.
Paranoia Agent: 13 episodes and it manages to feel like a whole 26 episodes.
Read or Die: The OAV is only three episodes long and awesome.
Macross Plus: 4 45 minute episodes, and it's classic.
Bastard!: The OAV is six episodes long and an entertaining take on Swords and Sorcery.

Aside from that my recommendations would mostly boil down to OAVs I have on VHS.

Can't believe I signed up just for this...

One not many seem to have seen (which is a shame): Moyashimon.

FLCL was downright amazing (at least what I've seen)

And some of my friends suggested Gurrenn lagann, yet I've never had the chance to watch it...

Fooly Cooly. It makes no sense, and is one of the most bizarre things I have ever seen, but it's really good and only 6 episodes.

Clannad: not insanely short, but not insanely long: 2 24-episode seasons. Easily the most emotional work of film, animated or live, that I have ever seen, especially in After Story (the second season).

It was by the guy's who made FLCL and shows some influences (i.e crazyness) from it, so you'd probably like it. And your friends are right, it is awesome.

Elfen Lied and Code Geass are rather short, but still fantastic animes. Death Note is also pretty good.

Black Lagoon got the green light for a third season...so eventually I wouldn't call it short. But damn good none-the-less!

WHAT THE FUCK!!!???? Really? Please tell me you are telling the truth. Oh shit that OWNS.

Code Geass and Death Note are both, I believe, two seasons long.

Could be wrong - but they're excellent nevertheless.

You are correct.
Death Note clocked in at 37(?)
and Code Geass at 50.

OT: NGE is also quite short, at 26 episodes. But so, so satisfying.
Though if you do watch it, you MUST watch End of Evangelion as well.

Azumanga Daioh!
Only 26 episodes, but it cracks me up so much! :D

It's really random, and not even about anything in particular - just a group of 6 girls and 2 of their teachers in particular (that sounded less creepy in my head :S ), at school, and at home, etc. How they get along, going through 3 years of their schooling.

It's... Actually quite good, considering there's no real plot to it...
If you're looking for a short anime that really challenges you in any way, then this... probably isn't the one for you :P
But it is good for a laugh.

Baccano!

It's about mobsters in Prohibition era New York City. Supernatural mobsters. It's amazing. Crazy wtf-humor next to incredible gore. 16 episodes. Watch it.

Seconded. You want to watch them again (I am!), when you're done, to catch everything.

Elfen Lied and Hellsing are brilliant. I'm currently watching Death Note, which may be the best anime I've watched so far. I've watched 15 episodes in a row today, because it was too intriguing to stop. But I'm not very well versed in anime though.. I liked Trigun as well, though some parts of the series was slightly tedious imho.

Short but awesome huh? Well, as someone else has already mentioned, Afro Samurai, which, in my personal opinion, is a 5 episode + 1 movie-I-really-need-to-get-around-to-seeing instructional video on how to be awesome. What else? Kannazuki No Miko, a rather lovely romance story, with giant robots, I know a mecha hater (as opposed to yours truly, a "Mecha-dork", I just love mechs, I'm not particularly picky about the size, see: Appleseed) who got some enjoyment out of that one, but I'll admit it's not for everyone, Wikipedia first. The 24 long Chrono Crusade also makes the grade as far as I'm concerned, then again I never read the mangas and was therefore never scorned by the anime, then again it did have a christmas episode...
Gundam fans would be doing themselves a disservice if they didn't watch Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, it's only 13 episodes long, watch it.

Oh yeah and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, but you probably already knew that.

Read Or Die was pretty good. It had great art and animation and some interesting characters. It was only like 3 episodes.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned The 08th MS Team. 12 episodes, and pretty mature for being a series about giant fighting robots.

Black Heaven is a good series, IMHO. Also 12 episodes, and plenty of hard rock references.

Okay, now watch Kodomo No Jikan so you can make a comment on Suiseiseki's next review.

Always struck me as a little too loli-esque, to be honest.
Though I did watch Strawberry Panic! and I fucking loved it, because I am a huge girl you guys.

I thought that was a hentai.

I've only recently gotten into anime, thanks to this site, but the two I've seen all the way through (Elfen Lied and Hellsing) are both excellent. I really want to start watching Death Note too, and I've heard good stuff about Code Geass, are there any others people could recommend, while we're on that topic? :)

FLCL and K-On were great and way too short (6 and 13 episodes, respectively). Cowboy Bebop is pretty good too and Gundam 08th MS Team sits on my top three favorite Gundam series.

Black Lagoon was only 1 season I think.

That gets my vote.

It's the Firefly of the anime world
