my computer has taken to restarting almost randomly, but it gives me a countdown before it does it..

it says "Your computer is going to restart in 1:00 minutes" and it counts down, and then it restarts.

That is usually the work of a virus, but can also occur if a system service stops responding and is set to restart the computer. You can stop the shutdown by opening the command console (start->run, type CMD) then type shutdown -a .

If you run a scan and it comes up clean, the next step would be going through your services to find which one is set to restart your computer on failure. You can go to start-> run, then type services.msc . Then you have the wonderful task of going through every one of the services, right-clicking on each, going to properties, then to the recovery tab, and disabling whichever one is set to restart your machine. There may be a better way, but I don't know of it.

Some times if its a long hall my computer will turn on its super fan, its bloody loud compared to the normal sweet little hum. My computer cares for me it tells me when i have been on it for too long.

Mine refuses to turn on within 20 minutes of shutting it down. Annoying as hell sometimes.

sounds like a heat-related issue.I'd upgrade the CPU cooler to a copper-based one and find something like Arctic Silver or Arctic Ceramique.

It's not a virus, and it doesn't happen often enough at the moment for me to give 2 shits about fixing atm, mostly because I'm lazy, and it's probably a problem that can be solved with a scalpel, but I only have a great axe to fix it with.

So I'll live my life, having my computer reset occasionally until it resets constantly. Then I'll format my hard drive and start again.

Ahh they great circle of life.

Well, since upgrading to Win7, if I open google chrome, then open three tabs that are Facebook, The Escapist and Kotaku... It blue screens. But for no other combination of tabs...

Switches the " and @ buttons around at will.

My computer does this, and I hate it. I've gotten used to it now, which is a problem for when I type on other computers.

OT: It has a habit of being quite a shit gaming computer, but then, it's running Vista...

Might just need a new CMOS battery for the first issue...

Does it spout some drivel about updates at the same time? A lot of Microsoft things are prone to that, especially Vista.

Speaking of which, I swear my computer is spying on me. Whenever I have a shower (without fail) I'll come back and all my programs will be closed, with a little message over the toolbar saying "your computer was restarted so that some updates could be installed".
Weird.

No, my computer grinds to a halt, then when it comes back to life, a few seconds later I'll get an unhidable windows popup telling me that something or other has unexpectantly stopped working and my computer will restart in 1 minute.

I'm REALLY not looking for tech support here.. I just like the idea that sometimes computers develop habits.

Often the enter button stops sending IM's and I have to click the send button, most upsetting.

Sometimes if i have two tabs open, and are switching between them frequently, it will make one of the tabs its own window.

You accidentally moved it slightly. I do it all the time.

Oh, also, my MSN and to a lesser extent my Yahoo Messenger keeps missing messages. My girlfriend and I will have huge one-sided conversations, only to determine that we had entirely missed hours worth of the other person talking.

sucks royally.

my computer tends to overload with anything more than two windows running and it refuses to allow me to save word documents, which makes writing up multiple-page essays annoying as hell. I guess this is what I get for having stolen this computer from some human.

Mine will BSOD for no reason when playing the Fallout 3 expansions after about 1 hour.

It also sometimes fails to turn the DVD on drive when it boots up, so I have to restart if the light on the drive isn't on :(

It also decided one day to totally ignore my Zune when I plugged it in. The software wont sync, but somehow it still charges :S

Mine tries to sell me things. Also my old laptop's screen used to turn off and when it came on again everything would all be mashed up, two days later i had found out the graphics card had melted.

My computer isn't allowed to have any annoying habits for any length of time. It takes away from my habits.

I think my computer or more specfically my Internet Explorer hates the Escapist because at random times it will pop up some message about...

"It cannot load the requested page and the operation was aborted"

Sometimes it will sometimes it wont but the point is my Windows IE has somthing against this site.

Go to start-> run, type 'msconfig'. Go the Services tab, check the 'Hide all Microsoft Services' box, then disable any services that you don't need to have running. If you're unsure what a service is for, Google it, or just leave it alone. Go into the Startup tab, and similarly disable anything that looks to be unnecessary.

Already messed around with that a bit, but I haven't nailed the exact culprit.

Ah well, I'm not stressing over it. Chalk it up as a major reason to get Windows 7.
