I don't know how famous he is but Moby should get some more recognition.

Deffo, he's a brilliant artist.

Amorphis should get a little more recognition imo too. As should most artists on the candyrat label

KARNIVOOL!!! Utterly fantastic band listen to this, tell me if you like

Oh yuck, I hate them. Tool mixed with nu-metal, eeeewwwwww.....

How come almost everyone in this thread is mentioning musicians who are already really well known?

Lars Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth and Bloodbath. Vocalist, guitar, songrwriter

John Haughm of Agalloch. Pretty much everything, I think

Martin Axenrot of Opeth. Drummer extraordinaire

I always think this about Local H, but they could be more famous than I know. I don't really pay much attention anymore.

A year ago I would've said Owl City but he's getting pretty popular these days so yeah.

Now, however, I wold definitely say Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover aka the black guy from Derrickcomedy. He's one of the best rappers I've heard in a while. And his CD Poindexter is one of the few where I like every song so yeah I think he deserves a little more fame.

I forgot to mention Heaven Shall Burn. They're fucking awesome but not many people I talk to know about they and/or think they're some Satanic band. Though that could be an indication of where I live.

I gotta agree with Porcupine Tree, especially "Voyage 34" and the 40-odd minute improv of Moonloop on "Transmission IV".

I'd also have to say Frank Turner, British singer/songwriter/guitarist. He was in punk band Million Dead then embarked on a solo folk career, but kept a lot of his punk bitterness. Probably the wittiest lyrics I've ever heard.

Clutch. They seem to have a little following on the Escapist, but in real life when I mention them no one has a clue what I'm referring to.

Porcupine Tree - Without a doubt the best prog rock band on the planet and the best band to watch live. Tight, good mixing, excellent light show. Made Iron Maiden look like amateurs.

Devin Townsend. He's from Canada and produces some fantastic sound. This is from an album called 'Ziltoid the Omniscient' and the album is about an Alien invading Earth for the ultimate cup of coffee. There is also his new Album called 'Addicted!' that I strongly recommend and comes with a re-release of 'Hyperdrive' which is on Ziltoid. Devvy is far too talented to be so unknown.

Edit: Sorry, just thought of an Australian punk band called Frenzal Rhomb. Their music is fantastic and their concert work is fantastic. Saw them at a bar at my uni and they packed the entire thing out, had the crowd going crazy with mosh and outrageous singing. Check them out, too.

Steve Albini

He produced about a million bands like Nirvana and The Pixies and Jarvis Cocker and such, and was the frontman of the greatest punk band ever, Big Black (in my opinion) but nobody seems to have heard of him.

Maybe not aren't as famous, but deffinitely underappreciated would be Pink.

But your original quesiton would either be VV Brown or Little Boots.

Pink, underappreciated? It might just be an Australian thing, but you can't listen to more than 15 songs on the radio in a row without one of them being pink. She'd be an example of someone I think gets far too much attention for her talent (she's not bad, but seriously, nobody should get that much airtime).

You know, it actually is an Australian thing. She's absolutely loved more than oxygen over there and it's kinda crazy, but elsewhere it's nowhere near as intense which I think's kinda weird that she wouldn't equally as loved in America at least.

I dont think Axenrot is as good as Martin Lopez who did the drumming for MAYH,Still Life,BWP, Ghost reveries, Damnation and Deliverance.

I believe your talking about Float and I agree with you. It''s definitely not bad, but it was nowhere near as good as Within A Mile of Home or Drunken Lullabies...

And yes, i do overuse the italicization feature.

That's the one. Found it a little too slow, and it lost the Celtic sound I loved.

Albini is AWESOME. I think anyone who's truely into alternative music would probably know who he is. Maybe, that's just wishful thinking and I spend too much time talking to music nerds on the net. But in the sphere Albini operates in, he's pretty much recognised I'd say...

Paul Masvidal and crew. So many awesome and creative bands in that group of guys. Cynic, Aeon Spoke, Atheist, etc.

I find it funny that a lot of the bands people mention are the forerunners of their respective genres.

Hank Williams III. Pure country awesome.

But I'm guessing he's not that bothered about not being famous. It's just that he plays proper country music, not radio country.

I think Modest Mouse's newer stuff gets too much love, but their older stuff deserves a lot more.

This. Gavin Harrison is my favourite drummer, and in my opinion, the best one.

Everybody says this, but I rather liked We Were Dead. Some of their earlier stuff was hit and miss, but The Moon and Antarctica is still one of my favorite albums.

I love how Brock is always very rhythmic with his singing, even in a softer, more melodic setting. Very musically subversive.

Well, these guys have one famous song- but the Flobots seriously deserve more all around fame. Handlebars is great, but its shit compared to most of their other music.
