Look into brasilian jazz, doesnt really matter which artist its bound to be amazing.
I couldn't find any good examples on Youtube have any specific songs that you like? why my threads always die? :(
Miles Davis! Kind of Blue is one of my favourite albums of all time, you should check it you =D
Here's a few to get you started...
Yes. Very yes. | |
Count Basie is a good 'un. Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, generally latin jazz and benny goodman are all favorites of mine.
Advice for anyone thinking "I want to get into jazz" 1. Sun Ra - google it - he's the man
I get into Koop, it's jazz made from sampling instruments etc. Sounds good though. Also Quantic/Quantic Soul Orchestra.
Wes Montgomery, great jazz guitarist. Get "The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery", it's my very favorite jazz album.
coltrane and more coltrane. okay maybe ella fitzgerald too. For something almost big band but good, squirrel nut zippers.
I meant to listen to, not as a career choice, I have no musical talent whatsoever. :P
Looked them up, not really my thing, I suppose that's not my type of jazz.
Eh...again not my thing really, I like energetic jazz with a lot of fiddle, god I love a good fiddle player.
Something about their songs is so relaxing, I like them. :)
Big Bad VooDoo Daddy isn't bad. Count Basie is another good one.
If you're into Django. Try "Hot Club of Cowtown" or "Bela Fleck and and Flecktones" I'm really into some of the more modern synth stuff too like "Yellowjackets" (yeah 80's not really modern) and "Turning Point".
Listen to some jazzcore. Yes, it actually exists, and yes, it is awesome.
Here ya go. It's in 5/4 time signature.
That's a relief. It means that you're safe from ruining your life. Anyway if you're already listening to Django then it's all pretty downhill from there I'm afraid. Jazz got worse and worse, crawling further up its own ass as it went along. Although there is a new retro jazz movement happening right now that is all about jazz back before it started sucking. Hot Club Of Cowtown is one of the best of these new groups.
I've been slowly getting into some jazz fusion if that counts Edit: didn't notice the second part
I'm familiar with that song and it shall be promptly added to my playlist, I thank you. NO idea what a time signature is. :P
I was totally ready to be blown away when the "Core" part of the song came in halfway and fucked up the song with a general noisy clusterfuck.
Very interesting, I may grow to like him. Strange music video.
Yeah. Fun fact: Derek Trucks toured with the Allman Brothers for over a decade, and is now an official member of the band.
Do a Wikipedia search for all the classics. If they're classic, they're good (you may not like them, but they're still good). Now, there are a few people/groups/genres that I would like to bring to your attention. 2. Acid Jazz. Groove Collective. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dY3lQ3TtZoI I realized upon hearing "Sigh" that I love the things that go beyond standard jazz.
I like "Candela" the rest just seems like generic hispanic folk music. :/
Reminds me a lot of techno, again not really my cup o' tea, seems I'm impossible to please. Not too bad though.
Fiddle? You sure you're not after bluegrass?
Well the fiddle player in Django's band is terrific (He makes the band I think) and he isn't considered bluegrass is he? He is also a great guitar player and the trumpet player isn't half bad, so it's not just the fiddle player.
Keiko Matsui. Smooth jazz. Some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard.
I play that in my Jazz band, although its slightly different Trombone for the win
One of my favorites is Cab Calloway especially "Minne the Moocher" and "Refer Man". Also Coltrane, it seems everyone loves him
Yeah, I'm a bit of a purist, but it looks like there's a lot of good artists/groups being thrown around on this thread. Hope you find some more to listen to.
"Minne" is good, but it gets on my nerves sometimes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I should also mention that I like "Midnight the stars and you" by Ray Noble and "Sitting on top of the World" by Al Jolson but I've yet to find any other good songs by them. EDIT: And I also like "Anything Goes" by Cole Porter.
I blame Fallout3 for me now liking the swing/jazz style of music.
He's hackin' and wackin' and smackin'
That song was so weird! I love the Ink Spots too, thanks to Fallout 3, and I sort of like Bing Crosby as well.
Yeah turns out pete was a murderer and after the 500th or so time hearing that song I started to see how he could do it. lol.
Depends on what kinda era you're really into. Charlie Parker (Alto Sax) I'm sure people have already mentioned these but hey. Some newer guys: Uri Caine (Piano) Arrghh there's so much, I would end up going forever if I kept putting the ones that came into my head. Pretty much everyone I've put is, or has played, pretty straight-ahead bop jazz I realise, and there's lots more players out there of various styles but that would take far too much effort. Hope it helped.
I downloaded a file that has 80 jazz/swing songs on it (including all the songs from Fallout3). Glen Miller's Over the Rainbow is much better than the Wizard of Oz version.

I really want to get into jazz music, I already love Django Reinhardt and Louis Armstrong and I want to broaden my horizons. Give me some examples of your favorite artists Escapees!
Also, for discussion:
Why do you like that particular artist? How did you learn about them?
EDIT: I should also mention that I like "Midnight the stars and you" by Ray Noble and "Sitting on top of the World" by Al Jolson but I've yet to find any other good songs by them.
I also like "Anything Goes" by Cole Porter.
