Oh yeah, the soundtrack to Requiem for a Dream. I mean, it sounds upsetting enough, just wait until you connect the music with some other context... I'm getting disconsolate just thinking about it.

On topic; Led Zeppelin's No Quarter and Alice In Chain's Love, Hate, Love. The music and lyrics work perfectly together for the mood in both songs.

I try to avoid sad songs, but this one sends me into that special kind of funk you get whenever the world seems like a dark, foreboding place.

Personally "Go Rest High On That Mountain" by Vince Gill. Played at my best friend's funeral can't listen to it with out tearing up.

Sad song about stuff

I love that song. 'Delilah' (by them) is a downer, too.

Even though it has been done before, I would say Blank Page by The Smashing Pumpkins, Two Headed Boy: Part 2 by Neutral Milk Hotel, and 364 days by Murder City Devils. The last one is a good song for the upcoming holiday season.

That was a thing that should never happen.

Also, kudos for No Quarter. Good song, I'd go with that for a depressing song.

Hurt by Johnny Cash is really depressing, but I see it has been posted.

This is kinda depressing when you hear the lyrics.

I had some more, but I cannot remember them :(

Its all in Norwegian, but its basically about a man (referred as 170, a non-voluntary soldier) who goes off to war and thinks about his family back home. And how amazed he feels like his 6 months of service have weighed on him.

Then he gets his last orders to run into danger to check to see if the enemy is cleared out. And order he says he does not want to follow and begs his officers to look after his family.

Then goes off and never reports back.
the end of the soung is still haunting... where its just
'170 er det klart, er det klart?' (is it clear? well?)
'170 me vente på et svar!' (170?! We're waiting for an answer)

so its left ambiguous to his fate

I've heard "Gloomy Sunday" by Billie holiday has been labeled the most depressing song in the world.

just the tag line of the "Hungerian suicide song" hints at how depressing it is.

Most of the songs by Towns van Zandt.

Yhe ones that jump to mind are Dead Flowers, Waiting to die, and Pancho and Lefty. Apparently the chord progression from Pancho and Lefty are designed to make it more depressing.

these are my votes..i'm stuck between them all..

Sieze The Day by Avenged Sevenfold
The Coldest Rain by Diecast
pretty much anything by Into Eternity ((especially the new album, The Incurable Tragedy, once you know why the 3 Incurable Tragedy songs are dated..)) [[as well as their song Into Eternity]]
Porcelain by Moby
Don't Believe A Word by Octavia Sperati

I think this song is a really depressing song. Especially if you have watched the movie (Grave of the fireflies).

I felt real depressed after watching that movie. Most of the time I am not a big fan of this kind of movies (war and/or drama), but I found this one really good.

Also many songs of Enya make me feel depressed.

I say for me it is Johnny Cash Hurt because he is really apologizing for all the terrible shit he did to all the people that loved him over the years. That video is so real and deep. It makes me want to cry every time I watch it.

One by metallica 'cause seriously if you know what the song is all about it's really depressing.
also noted: Fade to Black (would be most if it wasn't pure awesome and had a better connection beetween lyrics and the reason it was written)
Welcome home(sanitarium)
The Unforgiven

EDIT: also My selene and Letter to dana by Sonata Arctica

That song is more depressing if it's sent to you by the only girl you want by your side and she lives over a hundred miles away...

Listening to that song now, I quite like it :)

Radiohead's Street Spirit. It has been named a few times, but it's really ahead of the other songs in this topic.

This song actually pulled me out of depression because I realised there was someone else out there who felt the same way -

Because I love animals I find the video makes this song deeply affecting -

Hmmm, all of these are sad songs, but there is only one song I know of that captures the emotion of hopelessness and depression.
