Why do random people add us on Facebook?

Today, I saw a friend request in my Facebook account. To my surprise, the profile picture of this requester was a pretty looking woman in her underwear. As I eagerly pressed YES, a thought appeared in my head. Why did I add her? Wait, why did she add ME? What do you people think? What makes us add random people on Facebook?

"YAY, ANOTHER FRIEND ON FACEBOOK!

The more friends I have, the more people believe I'm popular and cool!"

^ something like that.

Pretty much this. I only have my personal friends added on FB, and it really confuses me when some random person online asks if they could add me. Why would you want someone you barely know to be able to see your facebook page?

A few things come to mind:
- Friend of a friend
- S/he's into you
- Cares about Friend #

You obviously added her because she was a good looking woman in her underwear. You did what any man would do, congratulations. :)

Thank you Hub!

Yeah, that's pretty much it, people equate friends with success. It's the same reason people pressure you to Subscribe to them on Youtube.

Sadly, a similar mindset is beginning to form here....

You think that's bad? I have an e-mail account for purposes merely on having one if I need it. I use it to verify thing like my escapist or deviant art account, get information for things like a schedule for soccer, personal stuff like that. I don't have ANY contacts on it (because I use steam to talk with friends) and STILL I get 4-6 requests DIALY to add a random person as a contact. How do they even find me??

"She" was a spam bot. "She" added you to spam you, you accepted because some guy put a cute picture on the profile he is spamming with.

I don't add random people on Facebook, I rarely add people I like on Facebook and usually just wait for them to add me.

I don't get that on Facebook. I do get that often on my twitter account (which I hardly use, and is more to just be able to follow people) and I got that CONSTANTLY on MySpace by sexbots. One time I got 2 friend requests and both of them had the same picture. Maybe they were just twins..

Believe it or not there are people who gauge their self worth by the number of friends they have on social networking sites.

It's better then Myspace.

"Hey babe, Myspace won't let me post my nude pictures on here but click this link!

Looking forward to meeting you hot stuff"

Anyway, I just ignore everything. I can't be arsed with Facebook anymore.

zungerman090:
why did she add ME?

Most likely it's a spam bot, that's why.

Although rarely, because people are bored and/or shallow.

Random people don't add me. Sounds like a personal problem.

Because having 273 friends means you're a social person?

Personally, I don't trust people that has more then 60 friends. And yes, that is alot of people, but I'm rather picky about my friends.

And also, why would you add someone you don't see IRL or at least talk to several times a week? I've been playing some MMO:s in my time, and have had nice guilds, but I've never even added those I've played with for months...

The discussion in this thread is basically over, as that's pretty much the reason right there.

The answer to your question is that it is someone phishing for details. Do you know how many people post heir Email address, where they were born & their full DOB on their facebook? In my job we have followed a couple of these as a line of ivestigation & find people are liable for transactions they didnt make because they basicly gave out their details on FB.

Privacy & caution on FB. Even on there people are trying to rob you

EDIT: As for the why we add people we don't know (I don't BTW) Hub already said it

EDIT: Probably be a good idea to remove this person from your account. Trust nobody

lots of people are friend whores...and that girl you're referring to is a scammer

Don't you just love sex advertisement profiles?

I hate getting added by them. I used to get added all the time on Bebo by them, but not anymore. I don't really use Bebo these days anyway, so nothing of value was lost etc.

On the other hand, if the person adding you isn't a sex advertiser, then you can bet your ass it's someone trying to up their friends list, 90% of the time.

Yeah, those girls are scammers. Dont be surprised if she soon sends you a message along the lines of "Hey i thought you were someone else but your still pretty cute. Maybe we should hang out." Trust me its a fat horny guy.

I actually have 270 friends :P
However, my former school has a big network, everyone basically knows or has met everyone. Plus I got friends and family in other parts of the world. But 400++ is a bit too much for me. My friend's younger sister seems to add every fucking person she sees or meets in her life, she has almost half of my friends list in common with her. However, as a person, she is quite insecure and not really that popular. She takes anything slightly negative as a direct insult, and even removed me from her friends because of some advice I gave her on something. So number of friends is luckily not related to how good and/or popular you are.

What is a scammer/spam bot? I am not well versed in Internet lingo. Could someone please tell me?

...the fuck is "Facebook?"
Sounds incredibly stupid.

Scammer - Someone who will trick/coerce you into either giving them money or anything of value voluntarily
Spam Bot - Someone who vies for attention via flooding another's inbox with useless information, usually containing viruses

There's about 15% of facebook friends that I don't know. 11% are hot girls. Do you argue when a hot girl pays attention?

Oh and the other 4% are probably some drunk guys that I've met while I was drunk.

Oddly enough some oung woman from Italy tried to add me just this week. I just clicked "ignore" as I did not know her and try to keep my Facebook Friends list to a relatively manageable amount. I think I have like 75 Facebook friends and I know every one of them personally.

I have a rule on Facebook that I follow pretty strictly.

If I have never spoken to you, either in email, chat or in person, prior to your friend request I will not friend you.

There are more than a few people who are miffed over this, as they say I went to high school with them, or, they are my 8th cousin, or they know some guy I know. But I don't think I am being unreasonable.

I think these people just want more friends in their list. As others have said, it's a status thing.

I see, thanks. I got my answer. Lock the thread or sth?

So they can say "I have 5,000 friends on Facebook, everyone hates you that's why you only have 40"...

they just want to be friends. its tough for a hot half-naked woman to make friends these days...

I never get random friend requests from scantily-clad women... am I doing something wrong?

I used to get random messages on myspace, had a couple "proposals" even got one from a guy, which i laughed and told the guy no thanks.

Facebook no randoms, all people i know. Dont link my facebook to anything.

I get really pissed off when random Year 8's and Year 9's from my school add me, despite not even knowing just so they can look like they have a lot of friends. One kid from my school went and added like 200+ people in one day, just so he looks like he is super cool.

Then there is this girl at my school who is quite attractive, and has 2000+ people on her friend list because of all these random guys just adding her. Pretty funny stuff.

Because they are idiots who just want to increase number of their virtual friend so that they could please their miserable ego.

Those women tend to have like 10 friends, a bunch of random non-connected people. They are likely a bot trying to get money from you, don't add them. People can get a lot of a information useful about someone by being their friend on facebook.

I refuse random people adding me these days and I routinely delete people in my friends list who I have never spoken to. It's for friends only and thats how it should be.

Besides, people like who the OP was on about are just your standard spambots trying to send you virus links, easily avoided.

I, like on here, just add anyone who adds me.

That's the only motive I got.
