Hope you found this useful!

I can see the usefulness in this, but couldn't people just look up these things on the individual pages for each thing? (e.g. On the individual forum front pages, or the video index, etc.)

Cool idea, very organised

They could, but you forget, people are lazy.

Lmao You are seeing a very early version - if you check it every few minutes you can watch me as I build it up slowly - I plan to have EVERYTHING and it in detail. It will solve alot of problems hopefully :P

So it's less effort to go to: (For this example let's say this gets stickied)
Main page --> Forums --> Off Topic Discussion --> Escapist Community and Forums Codex --> Zero Punctuation
Than:
Main page --> Videos --> Zero Punctuation

Or even:
Main page --> Forums --> Off Topic Discussion --> Escapist Community and Forums Codex --> Role Playing Thread Guidelines
Is easier than:
Main page --> Forums --> Forum Games & RP --> Role Playing Thread Guidelines

Or things that could be found with a quick search of the individual websites.

N.B. Just to make this clear: I think this would be very useful, but only if there weren't stickies or indexes already.
As it is, it's not hugely useful unless you're very new and want to know other places where escapists gather.

I was working on the assumption that this is going to have info on every forum section, so it's easier going to this one than each section for its own info thread.

1 (stickied) thread or 1 per forum section, which would the average newcomer read if they want to find their way around?

Part of it is for new members and for those who want detailed descriptions in one area. Plus its designed to replace the current community map - It will have information on EVERYTHING on all the different areas when it is completed.

I see... someone wants a second "Thanks"-badge!
Just joking, nice work for now. Making an Escapist-index sounds like lot of work.

2 thanks badges hmmmmmmmmmm The idea has possibilities!

*goes and gets large bag of cookies and looks for postal address of all moderates on escapists. Pens a few suggestive comments and mails them with cookies :P*

Exciting!

But information on EVERYTHING?

So you'll have detailed descriptions about my toilet-schedule? Yes, I have a toilet-schedule

I just feel like the statement about having information on EVERYTHING will be a little hard to back up.

I saw another one of these, though i dont think it was so vast as yours, they have a trouble of falling into the dark deep forgotten areas of the Forum if there not stickied, so try and get it stickied, in any case i've put this on my Web browser task bar along with that thread on the things you type to do spoilers and to use Bold ecetera and the Relations thread

Exactly!

I had to train yoga for 5 years before I was swift enough to effectively use my school schedule.

Taping it to my ass wasn't a very good idea.

Very nice, very nice. A hitchhikers guide, if you will.

No, I can see this being very useful. Perhaps something even to link to new members.

But you're not the Escapist Warchief.

I am was rather proud of the aesthetic presentation of it :P particularly the title.

I should have it done by next Sunday - have other commitments atm so I haven't included about 2/3rds of the information and links plus pretty pictures ^&

Good work mein fuhrer. However don't forget There Will Be Brawl to the list.

EDIT: Never mind, did you want me to commit sepaku?

Since you asked for my opinion in another thread, my opinion thou shalt get. I'm breaking your post up into chunks so that I can offer criticism to the specific points and it doesn't seem too confusing, but be warned that this will be large.

Hope you found all that useful. I've been working on that criticism for a good few hours by this point, I think.

Also, being the TMIF Councilman for Best Thread, I may throw this one in for nomination if people don't suggest it anyway. I think it deserves at least an honourable mention for the effort you've put into both this thread and the BBCode advice thread.

SeanTheSheep:

I'll use the same argument that Nomad used when he made Hitchhiker's Guide to the Escapist and that the staff used when they added the content badges: Yes looking it up themselves would be easier, but the issue is that a lot of people don't actually know about the existence of some of this site's content. Having a big list of it all in one area is a very convenient way of discovering new things.

I may have not spelled everything right and some BBCode may not work properly in this comment. It's half past midnight and I need to stay up to do Physics revision which at this rate will be ending at 2a.m., joy of joys. So all apologies if some links are broken or whatever.

Initial response to your response: WOW - that's alot of commentary and exactly the sort of thing I wanted - I have alot planned atm - but have exams like you going atm - so I have only put in like 1/3rd of the content and plan to have it done by next weekend at the latest. Alot of your comments were constructive and much appreciated I will be sure to implement almost all of them - plus I was annoyed by the line through the logo :P Been trying to get rid of that so thanks. I'll look into the user groups things but the main press on that is an idea I came up with where veteran users are invited in as 'helpers' and anyone can then join - with new members being directed towards it - where they can then interactively ask for advice also. I am not mad myself on the idea of spoilers - and I'll change some of the coding to free up characters. I will update all the guides I run and bring them up to standard by the weekend. If you don't mind when it's done I'll message you and ask for further constructive advice. ALSO now I have 4 of the Easter egg embedding video codes - it's difficult to find the legendary embedding codes for them as the moderators don't want hundreds of videos from lots of sites making the poor forum hamsters die in great numbers from supporting the server. So I'll have to ask kulinai or another moderator if it's cool with me putting those in! I plan to put community events like the review tournament in its own section. I ideally want it to be a constantly updated map - to replace wilson's - with also a section reflecting regular community life i.e. perhaps a section each month or week of the moderator's favourite threads . Also would be appreciated if you could tell me if there are any entries to TIEM that fit this index's bill?

I'm killing two birds with one very large paving slab by posting criticism of that thread here. This is a very good guide, possibly the best BBCode guides I've seen on this site including the official forum markup.

Animal cruelty is that something a member of the TIMF council wants to admit to? :P

claymorez:
Snip

Glad to be of assistance. Looking over the BBCode you may actually want to do the title like this:

This is just so that the small text doesn't get clustered up between the title and the logo.

You could also position the text and image the other way round if you don't like where the text is, but either way you won't be able to have the text in the centre without no line going through the image.

As far as embedding videos or images from other sites are concerned, it's okay as long as they're placed in spoilers. Whilst they're in spoilers, they don't need to be loaded at the same time as the rest of the page, so they can save a couple of hamsters that way.

And feel free to contact me for more criticism when you get round to updating your guides, I'll be more than glad to offer up any more points for possible improvement. All of your plans for updating this thread sound good so I can't wait to offer more advice if necessary.

As it is there aren't really many threads which I would view as helping out the community in a way that this guide is meant to. This thread could've been an entry but josh797's no longer giving out his offer, so it isn't really beneficial anymore to the community as a thread.

Animal cruelty is that something a member of the TIMF council wants to admit to? :P

Hey, I am more than just a councilman for TMIF!
Okay, one of those hasn't been alive since July last year but I'm still including it.
