Poll: That old dillema! Blind or Deaf?

 Pages 1 2 3 NEXT

We have all thought about it once in our life, and now I ask you:

WOULD YOU RATHER BE DEAF OR BLIND?
(No, you're not born with it, what if it would happen RIGHT now, for the rest of your life)

I would rather be deaf, because you can still read and participate in society when you are deaf. But don't think of it too lightly; Deaf means you will never be able to listen to music again, and never have that much fun at festivals and concert!

Deaf! You can still feel the vibration...
And people who are yelling at you don't matter that much anymore.

Still it is very very very very serious illness/genetic defect/whateverthing and I rather have some sort of tyroid cancer or something.

Easily deaf. Blindness would be a bitch, and as much I pride myself on knowing everything that happens in the house via my ears, my eyes still facilitate things like fun.

And blind people are...What? Lepers?

Blind. I'm an aural learner, and aside from video games most of my hobbies have more of an aural emphasis.

deaf, because i could always just learn to read lips or hang out with people who can sign.

Deaf.

I could still play my games and do everything I do now if I lost my hearing. I'd be lost without my sight ... quite literally.

Music isn't important to me but being able to see is.

Easily deaf. I'm sure it would suck more than I expect and require a lot of adjusting, but it's nothing compared to the never ending nightmare that being blinded must be.

I'd rather be deaf. I don't trust people with the safety of my dick and 'nads. If I was blind, I'd always be walking around with my hand covering my groin.

Reading Lips is actually pretty hard, especially when you have nothing aural to back it up.

Very very tough decision.

If blind I would miss seeing the world.
And everyone that inhabits it.
Also no more reading and all that.

If deaf, there would be no more music, not even the faintest sound.
Honestly I'd rather commit suicide than going through life without sound.

I'd go for blind, it would hurt me deeply, but I would find a way to deal with it.
...Sunglasses are awesome!

Yeah, yeah, I had that coming :P
I decided not to go further into that, but of course blind people are not lepers. What I meant was that blind people need more adaptions to continue their normal life and will more easily become socially excluded than deaf people.

fair enough. but it would be a lot more difficult if i can't see.

Definitely deafness. Either would suck, but I'd hate to not be able to see. It would be soul crushing. Deafness would really suck too though, especially since I'm a bassist. Ah well, you know what they say, nobody hears bass anyway.

depends on the cause of deafness because if its just damage to the three small bones in the ear i can just get surgery

Not really true.

Sorry if I'm taking this a little more seriously than you, but I can chuck a stone and hit a school for the deaf. There is a HUGE deaf community here, and I bet about half would either be offended or mock you for the relative ease you ascribe to it.

And I mean no offense, it's just...I'm looking at this from a slightly less specious point of view.

TrilbyWill:

Way harder to lip read, yes.

Blind. Sure, not being able to see will be hard, but let me put it like this; I'm going to a university in music composition. And besides, does nobody realize just how much sound means to us? Be it a movie, a game, or real life, sound is an integral and important part of everything.

So yeah, I'd rather be blind than deaf. I'm no Beethoven.

Deaf; Everything I enjoy requires sight, while sound is almost always optional. Wouldn't want either but i'd be much more effected by the loss of sight since i couldn't do my job, talk to my online friends, or play games, which among the three make up most of my time spent.

Well, since most people are no doubt going to say deaf... I'm gonna say blind. I'll get around, and increase my other sense to super human levels in the mean time. Every blind person I meant is essentially a secret super hero that can taste, hear, smell and feel things as if they were bitten by a radioactive thing.

Deaf. I already suffer from aspergers syndrome. It'd suck but if I got blind I'd be unable to do just about anything I would like to. I'd commit suicide within the first week.

Deaf. While I'd certainly miss having music in my life, I still think life would be much easier and enjoyable having sight.

Deaf, perhaps it could be considered a blessing too in some moments. Eternal silence and peace.
Now being blind and not being able to do anything? I'd jump from the top of a mountain;

As a musician, this is a pretty deep dilemma for me, and honestly I'm undecided. Yes, deafness is the logical choice in order to diminish the effect on your normal life, but considering that the majority of my life is devoted to music, what would the cost of that be? Yes, Beethoven was deaf, but not everyone is as gifted as he was...

Just a bit of advice from a biologist (I know this is hypothetical anyway) but don't ever pick cancer.

OP: deaf, humans rely to much on sight to lose it randomly, though mine isn't great anyway.

Deaf, so I can still read books, play videogames, watch series (albeit subbed).

I would take the third option: Mute! Much better, in my opinion.

You don't have to apologize, it's a forum, right! :) I was never my intention to mock any disability, my apologies if that is what you thought I did by creating this poll. I really don't think too lightly of either disabilty, it's about the decision between the two.

I know there is a huge deaf community in the world, but I think being blind would have a much greater effect on my social life than being deaf would.
I wouldn't be able to read anymore (even IF I would learn Braille, still I would only be able to read books that were translated into Braille) And what about this forum or Internet itself! Also, I'm a big movie fan, and I wouldn't want to give that up. (I'm an even bigger music fan, but therein lies the dillema for me personally)

Deaf easily. My hearing is already sub-par, and I can just turn subtitles on for when I want to watch shows or play video games.

Deaf, seeing as I love video games, and it'd be pretty hard to play video games if I were blind. Though if it were a choice, I'd pick being mute over either of those two any day.

Deaf.

What can't I do when deaf? Well, I can't listen to music anymore. I can't hear anyone talking to me anymore. And I can't hear a fire alarm if it goes off or anything like that.

But I could still read, drive, walk without a guide, play video games and watch movies with subtitles on, get on the internet, and many other things that I enjoy doing.

But blind? If I were blind, I would have to be very careful where I walked. I would have to always have help. I would have to relearn how to read. I couldn't find anything. I couldn't play video games. I couldn't watch movies. I couldn't drive (can't deaf people drive?).

I could still listen to music and talk to people, but I think those advantages over deafness are very slim.

It's kind of like losing your legs vs your arms - I would rather lose neither but one has a whole lot more uses than the other to me. I would rather keep my arms.

EDIT: Also, I would never ever have to participate in a subbed vs dubbed argument again. It would always be subbed.

Deaf, I rely on my sense of sight more than my sense of hearing, plus this way I'd still be able to see my fiancee at our wedding and enjoy more of the forms of entertainment that I take for granted than I would if I were blind.

I just get the feeling I'd miss my hearing less than I would my sight.

Deaf. There's just too much in my life that depends on my sight. I'd miss listening to my favorite bands and all, but then, I'd also get to stop hearing people talk. I think that's a fair trade-off.

Hmm, so watch porn or listen to porn...

Never actually thought about this, it's freaking hard. Deaf I would lose music, and I really don't wanna lose music be it the one I make myself or the one I listen to. But blind I would also be a 10 on the suckiness scale. I have several spots where I can just go and sit and look, because the scenery is so beautiful (no it's not a strip joint). I really don't want to lose that either.

I can't choose, I'm just gonna hope neither happens to me!

Deaf, sure I will miss the sound of music and voices but sight is far more important to me.
Look at it this way, I already watch subtitle anime so if I'm deaf I will only miss the sound of the character voices but I still get to see it. if I'm blind, it would be impossible to listen to anime (sure I could somehow take lesson to speak and understand Japanese but there is no audio descriptive animes).

Deaf. It's not really much of a contest and not much of a thinky-thought. Humans are sight-oriented and more or less -dependent creatures. Any normal bloke can go through their life just fine without hearing (I'm in no way making a slight of deafness, I'm simply stating that being deaf hinders one's basic functions immeasurably less than being blind), but you life will become incredibly difficult and vulnerable if you're blind.
Being deaf fucking sucks, but being blind will make you more or less incapable of normal life without many compromises. I think that's all that needs to be said about that.

And, just to repeat, I'm in no way saying that deaf people have an easy life or won't be tremendously affected by their disability. It's just that a blind person will lose the very sight our entire society and species is built on. We're visual creatures first and foremost, after all.

I know blind people. I know deaf people. Deaf, no question.
