[Kid touches boat Alarm goes off. Kid runs up to his mum]

then the mum says stuff like 'oh its not your fault, the Alarm is faulty [lie]. don't worry its not your fault.'

it annoys me so much, you gotta let your son know that he did something wrong and he has to receive a punishment for doing the wrong thing.

Don't punish the child. Punish the parent for letting the child do something the child had no clue they weren't allowed to do. But yes I agree, the parent needs to "teach" their child on rights and wrongs, not just leave it up to someone else to do. Parents need to take more responsibility for their offspring.

And this reminds me of something similar. The First Lady Obama is fighting for healthier lunches in schools. And she has been getting a LOT of flak for it from people saying government shouldn't be getting involved in a parent's responsibility. BUT, if parents were doing their job to begin with, this wouldn't be an issue at all. I am far from being political, but to me everyone up on their soapboxes against this just seem like uncaring, anti-Obama hypocrites.

1.When people are reading something out loud and they find a word they dont know how to pronounce or whatever, so the just say a completely different word that is spelled like it. i.e, they say insure instead of insulate

2.When one of my friends spend or want to spend ridiculous amounts of money on an off-the-shelf PC, so I point out why its unnecessary and they just say something like "Wow, nerd." I want to punch them in the face every time.

EDIT: 3.When I say something that even remotely disagrees with their religion and they immediately respond with "You're going to Hell."

Me: Well I think that evolution has a lot of evidence going for it.

Friend: Well you're going to Hell.

Me: I don't believe in Hell.

Friend: When the Second Coming happens you'll go to Hell.

Me: I just died a little inside.

Velociraptors, and the fact that they were feathered.

No one ever seems to depict them with feathers though. Friggin Jurassic Park.

At least Pokemon gets it...

Well, that and the fact that Velociraptors are actually that size of large chickens. The dinosaurs depicted in Jurassic Park are closer to Utah Raptors, but Utah Raptor is a hell of a lot less threatening sounding then Velociraptor. Which is probably the main reason behind the name switch in the book.

-------------------

There are many ways of being human, and our species has evolved to the point where specialization is more preferable over the generalization that was once needed for survival. So while it may be annoying gaps in knowledge is perfectly normal, because human culture has developed to the point were we are or more able to rely on others for things we have no interest in, in order to specialize in things we are interested in.

Another point I found interesting about this thread is that the things people are finding annoying that people don't know is usually things related to the field in which they themselves have chosen to specialize in. The techie finds it annoying when people generalize name brands as specific types of device, while the mechanic finds it annoying that people know nothing about the cars the hurl down the road. It is a good illustration how humans tend to believe that their way of doing things is right, or more important then others' way of doing this.

British is NOT shorthand for English, there are three whole other countries in there.

On a similar note, for the love of God DO NOT make the mistake of thinking the WHOLE of Ireland is part of Britain, ESPESSIALLY if you are talking to someone actually from Ireland.

Ohh, it bugs me when people say "North of Ireland" as opposed to "Northern Ireland" because the north of Ireland consists of counties Donegal and Monaghan, haha. Mind you, I'm a wee bit tolerant of people saying I'm Irish, but usually only whenever they're referring to the whole island. I'd prefer to live down south anyway! That reminds me; I'm suppose to be heading to Kent in the summer months as part of a film crew but I've been hearing things about how the mainlands won't accept Northern Irish money. It's absurd though, because it's the same currency. Apparently Scottish folk have the same problem. I hope that doesn't happen but it'll be their own fault if I hand them all my change! Where are you from, out of curiosity?

There's actually a comedy sketch somewhere about that very problem.
I'm from America, why so curious?

Again, as I stated every one, and I mean EVERYONE, has ignorance. This is just a place to vent on what ignorances annoy you personally in your life. Which makes sense most would involve daily aspects of their life.

i.e. I work in electronics retail so most annoyances I encounter will be electronics related. I don't spend any time at all in bars so I have no annoyances drink related. I play on-line through Steam and PSN so I'm not going to encounter XBox Live annoyances, though I know they're out there.

When people say they are agnostic. That doesn't mean anything. I can be agnostic about colors, because I have no preference in them, you have to say that you are religiously agnostic for it to mean anything.

Not tech related, but people who think pansexuality is the same as bisexuality(it's not), or those who haven't heard of pansexuality and are like "what" or "that's stupid" or even "you're going to hell for you sexuality, why don't you change??".

And some of these people I've even seen here on the Escapist. It's insane.

Can I ask, what -is- the difference?

As far as I'm aware...

Bisexual = Attracted to males and females.
Pansexual = Attracted to all genders.

Which is kind of the same thing. :/

I'm not trying to be confrontational, I literally just want someone to explain what the difference between the two terms is! :(

"yeah..but racers and platformers are just better on console"

WHY?

is it the controlls? if you dont liek mouse/keyboard just get a gamepad..problems solved

and if you dont like mouse/keyboard that much then why are you attempting to play sich game son a PC?

This reminded me of something else I always dread hearing... "Lets get Call of Duty on Wii because it's cheaper!" Seems to a lot of people, if it's on multiple systems, it has to be the exact same. They never think about stuff like hardware restrictions or modding capabilities. It's all the exact same damn it! :p

From what I can tell (could be wrong here), Pansexuality means that you don't 'see' them as male or female, you just see them as people. Which leads me to believe that there are also a lot of people who think they're bisexual who are actually Pan.

Or alternatively there are a lot of bisexual people who identify as pansexual and are actually just pretentious dicks.

*shrugs*

There's too much labelling and attempting to define sexuality in the world for my liking, some people like men, some like women, some like both, some like neither, and every bastard thing inbetween... Why can't we all just shag who we want without having to argue semantics.

Well, that's kind of a recent fact compared to Jurassic Park, and most people still don't know (they should really start getting it, you've got a point there).
By the way, that's an Archaeopteryx, not a Velociraptor.

Because there ARE more than two genders. You could be a male by sex by a female by gender. You could be a female by gender but want to be gender neutral. You could be a male who wants to look like a female but doesn't have a sex change, or a drag queen or drag king even.

Even sex can have grey area (due to surgery). You could be a hermaphrodite of ether original sex and a pansexual would accept you.

Really, there are so many possibilities for people to identify themselves, that having bisexual be the only sexuality to accept them is just silly. Not to mention the linguist advantage (Pan meaning "all" and bi meaning "two").

Really, I don't see why most people are more aware of this sort of thing. If they were, then maybe I would have to argue with them over the existence of pansexuality all the damn time.

I think AMV is supposed to mean "Anime Music Video," though I can't remember where I heard that.

ExileNZ:

Fair's fair, AMVs were "anime music videos" first - I'd never even heard the term with "animated" before I read your post but I'm presuming that's the current compromise.
Not that AMVs with western series weren't around beforehand, they just didn't go by that name.

Still, since "Anime" is actually just a Japanese short version of the English word "animation", the meaning remains the same, no matter how you interpret the abbreviation (Since "Anime" is itself an abbreviation of "Animation").

There is just so much wrong with that logic, but let me give the short answer.

Whatever it's origin, "anime" refers (unambiguously) to Japanese animations.

Unless you want to try to tell me that "famicom" still refers to any "family computer" aside from the old NES.

Or that the word "nice" still means "retarded" in the pejorative sense, as that was the original abbreviated form of "nescio" (literally "I don't know") the Romans used ~2000 years ago.

So no, the meaning doesn't remain the same. Not only has it changed context (or at least become more nuanced), but it's changed languages, twice.

Chunga the Great:
1.When people are reading something out loud and they find a word they dont know how to pronounce or whatever, so the just say a completely different word that is spelled like it. i.e, they say insure instead of insulate

I don't think that they are willfully saying the wrong word. When we read, we read the word as a whole, not letter by letter, so when someone comes across insulate when they are reading, and hasn't seen it enough to recognize it automatically, their brain reads insure, a word they know and looks similar without even noticing.

Mau95:

Pizza isn't a vegetable! It's a whole nutritious meal covering all the food groups! ;)

Doesn't make a great deal of sense to me either, but it's something along the lines of restricting children's choices of meals which only their parent should have the right to do or something. Don't look at me; back when I was in school we never had any options like they do today. We either got the grub of the day or we brown-bagged it.

I think I once saw call of duty black ops....on a wii

like....WHAT? how much butchering would that game have to go through to get on a wii?

[quote="UncleUlty" post="18.339930.13754842"]10. Shop around. Prices at funeral homes vary wildly, with direct cremation costing $500 at one funeral home and $3,000 down the street. (Federal law requires that prices be provided over the phone.) Different places price things differently, NO WAY!

I use to work at a white goods store and this same point comes up,"Why is this washing machine $500 here when the other retailer can sell it cheaper?" It's very greating.

Something else that may not be related but still pisses me off. Customers ordering stuff over the phone and having us describe the machine when they are perfectly capable to come in store or go to the company's website to look at the machine itself. The number of times I've had customers call for prices on products they haven't seen yet, only to say I'm just window shopping, PISS... OFF...!

Both Black Ops and Modern Warfare 3 are on Wii. And DS! Not sure which is a more waste of money. Probably Wii since for $10 more you can get the whole game instead of just half. But the DS versions do suck sooo very badly... hmmm..... tough one.

Oh yes! I wouldn't call this ignorance, just laziness! But at least once a week I will get a call from a customer asking me to describe every laptop (or occasionally some other product) I carry. Well lets see, I only have 30 different models ranging from $200 to over $1,000... so, ummm.. no.

Sad thing is, we even have a website but they're too lazy to even look through it. Yup, definitely annoying.

People who hate a music genre based on a few songs of that genre that they dislike. I give everything a chance, and by doing this I have found a lot of great music that I never would have listened to otherwise.

I agree, sort of. People who don't give a song a chance just because it falls into a category they don't generally enjoy listening to. They can miss out on sooo very much that they might have really enjoyed, but are too stubborn to give a shot.

And this also applies to other things too. Like games! Personally, I don't generally care for shooters. But I will still give them their opportunity to disappoint me because you never know when something really awesome like Bioshock or just incredibly fun like Postal 2 might happen by. Team Fortress 2 is still one of my top played games after three years. And I could have easily just passed it off as just another shooter.

Master Cylinder:

This isn't necessarily ignorance, but just a values decision. If someone has listened to 5 country songs and hated them all, they might decide that they would rather listen to music they know they're probably going to like instead of spending that time listening to more country in the hopes of finding some they enjoy.

OT: I find it both annoying and mildly funny how many people are ignorant of the definition of "ignorant."

Also, people who are ignorant of basic computer knowledge despite using them all day. Seems like everyone I work with just memorized where to click the mouse, and never bothered to understand why things are done that way. So anytime something is slightly different they panic, even when all they had to do was read the words on the screen.

Back when i worked for a customer care call center for our local cell phone company, one of the surprisingly frequent questions we got asked was "Why isn't Canada/Mexico part of our nationwide calling plan?" Most of the time we would roll our eyes and just point out that they are seperate countries. On occaision though, when i was feeling particulary snarky about being asked about Canada, I would reply "Because we didn't win that part of the Revolutionary War."
Saddest part is that most of the time we got asked that the caller was completely serious and completely sober.

I work in retail and I sell the exact same merchandise as my fellow employees, yet they come to me time and time again with the exact same questions. It's well beyond just ignorance. It's laziness!

I recently saw a video review of The Incredibles on Youtube.

Said review basically stated that The Incredibles was a bad movie for children because it had conflict, obstacles for the heroes to overcome, and a villain that was actually evil.

Because why on earth would children actually wanna see that, right?

Here's what I mean, and I'll use your country music example to explain. Let's say that person listens to 5 country music songs, hates them, and is then instantly dismissive of all country music. So, if he's basing his distaste on something like Tim McGraw and Carrie Underwood and I ask him, "Hey, wanna listen to some Johnny Cash?" and he says, "No way, country music is garbage!" even though he has never listened to Johnny Cash, then he's ignorant of other types of country music. He might actually like Johnny Cash, but he won't know until he listens to it. That is what I meant with my example.

When people say an acronym, followed by a word that is part of the acronym.

"PIN Number - Personal Identification Number Number."

I also saw a FedEx van today - "FedEx Express - Federal Express Express"

Obviously the second isn't really an example, but it annoyed me none-the less.

Q: So what ignorances do you find frustrating?

I find the idea of people jumping on "bandwagons" to be very annoying. People who have no knowledge of a particular subject and are immediately for or against it simply because everyone else seems to be. I tend to see this a lot in gaming and tech communities where some people strive to be part of the popular crowd.
