My high school makes national news... for "racism".

Spoilered because the comments section will likely make your eyes bleed:

So, my old high school, Brentwood, has made the news in multiple media outlets on charges of "racism" being thrown about during a basketball game.

Why was this? Three students in the fan section, like they always do, dressed in banana suits and ran across the side court area where the bleachers are. Except this time, it was while my school was playing a predominately black school.

Additionally, sources are claiming that Brentwood students shouted racial slurs at the opposing players and fans. (This isn't true, by the way; everyone I know who was there, including my grandparents and several students from the other school, have said this didn't happen.)

Multiple "news" outlets, like Yahoo! have made the "connection" that since my school is predominately white, the three students (who I know personally) MUST have had racist intentions!

...Except they've been doing this for years. Against every school we've played. And no one has ever complained.

What I want to know is why the fuck is the media jumping all over my school when they didn't do anything? Are we that bad off as a society where people can take offense to literally anything? And why the hell are news outlets so eager to throw my school under the bus? Selling the news, eh?

Yes, I'm mad...

I'd say you and some other students from the school go to the media about this and give them your side of the story but likely nothing would happen, wouldn't pull in enough hits for them.

All I can offer you and your school is my sympathy and hope that the banana-men don't get their lives fucked up by this.

What...
.
.
The...
.
.
Fuck...

I really dont know what to say. This is EXACTLY what I mean when I say that racism will never stop as long as we look for it in everything!

I can't, I graduated last year and am currently 1,000 miles away at college. I'm urging my friends to, though. Hopefully SOMEONE picks up on the truth. :(

Could your school sue Yahoo news for slandering? These media groups need to be held accountable for the stories they print, and nothing gets someone's attention more than a lawsuit.

BTW, the banana mascot thing is freaking sweet, don't let your school ditch 'em

Holy roller-skating Jesus...

People have to calm down and realize that not every single damn thing is a racial slur. I don't look at a banana, think about monkeys and bam, epiphany, this is racist. It's like looking for a racist needle in a hay stack.

Prove it. Someone must have videos or pictures of this happening at all the other games. Find those vids, post them on Youtube, and go on the articles comments section linking them.

The evidence that this is a running theme in your school should be enough to clear your name, although the claims of racial slurs might be a bit harder to shift, but what high-schooler uses "cotton pickers" as a racial slur?

I wish, though that doesn't seem likely.

By the way: the banana-suit thing started out about 9 years ago, when as a "senior prank" a student in a gorilla costume chased around one of his friends wearing the banana suit on the field during a football game halftime. Somebody's worn the thing to about every school sporting event since then...

Looks like it might have to stop now, or else they'll face more charges of "racism". :(

According to some of my friends on Facebook, the school superintendents have reviewed the game footage (that the basketball team would normally use for studying purposes) and have confirmed that none of the claimed events occurred. On top of that, several state officials were in attendance at the game, and none have said that there was any wrongdoing on my school's part.

Hopefully, this information will make its way around. Its presence didn't seem to stop the Yahoo reporter, though. :(

Don't like the fact that some people like to call foul at any chance they can get. We get it, your offended. I don't give a shit either does anybody else. Get this problem popping up all the time. Have several people in these threads most of the time whining about whatever. The only thing you can do is arm yourself with the sarcastic gun and fire their whiny ass to the surface of the moon.

Thanks for contributing to the discussion. Your post was really insightful and informative.

So your angry that , your school did something to offend other? Well guess what , just because YOU don't find it offensive doesn't mean no one else does .

Basketball? Srsly ... why aren't you playing a real sport?

Oh .. and sucks to be target of someone who misses the point.

....Wow I don't know what this says about me but,

I literally spent 5 minutes trying to figure out how "Banana + Black People = Racist"

And then it dawned on me. lol

But the point is that their actions were in no way racist. Having someone dressed up as a banana was apparently a running joke at Basketball games. Third party access to footage of the match has apparently shown that there were no racial slurs or misconduct, indeed, the only footage in the news stories showed two people sitting quite far away from each other placidly in the crowd watching the game. If they had footage of the harrassment surely they would have showed it.

No one in the school was going to make the connection that coming to a basketball game dressed as a banana would lead someone to believe that they were passively insulting the opponents by making an indirect, tedious reference to an uncommon racial slur comparing black people to monkies, because that's a stupid thing to think.

I mean, virtually everything is offensive to somebody. You cannot control it all, so the big issue should be whether the action was meant to be offensive or not, and in this case there is no evidence that any malicious racism happened

So because several people took offense to something a few students did (these students, I might add, had no intention of offending anyone and were merely continuing a tradition) my school deserves to have its name slandered in the press and be labeled "that racist school" in the imminent future? Cool.

I didn't get it either until someone else in this thread basically explained it.

When I think of racism and bananas I think of Asians calling other Asians a banana, because they are yellow on the outside but white on the inside. In other words they are saying that the second Asian person is acting white, and has lost their Asian heritage.

Gotta love how thorough fact checkers are. *rolls eyes*

All I am going to say is that my town had a KKK parade down main street in the early 90s and that it is not in the united states.

Because they're black
And your school's white
and therefore racism
That's pretty much all a politically correct, ignorant person needs to assume racist action.
And these comments are understandable, they don't know both sides of the story, and usually news outlets don't provide both sides, as they enjoy to provoke anger in the masses toward one party, for extra views and entertainment.
It does upset me how the media works like that, and how white people are treated in society now'days around racism.

If I were the principal of your school I'd expel their asses. That was an elaborate prank that required a lot of forethought and preparation. I would not tolerate kids with hearts that cruel and minds that sick.

And yes, I'm afraid your school will be known as "that racist school" for a while now. That's just how it goes. How do you think students of Columbine high school feel, their school name being the definition of school shootings and violence? At least people will eventually forget about what happened to you. Columbine, Virginia Tech, and all the other schools marred by violence will always carry those images with them.

Stuff like this happens all the time too, although not on as big a scale as this case. Just the other day my friend got in a bit of a pickle over something as trivial as talking about the Digger Launcher in Gears of War 3, the black kid at the other end of the room misheard him and decided that he was a racist and acted without even thinking.

Oh wow, I feel for you dude, I really do. Seriously this is a load of major crap. If you're going to be news you have to show both sides of the story, its not "entertaining" but news is supposed to be just that news, not funny, not humorous, and not omitting important facts just to get more viewers interested.

Interestingly we can actually see this in more than just race. Sure nowadays a white man has a lot to worry about because people expect him to be racist, not the black guy he's talking to. Yet, we can also see that in gender, in trying to get things equal we've just made it so that we always expect the man to be the sexist jerk and believe the woman over him.

Somebody was looking for it. Anytime a mostly black school competes against a mostly white school, there's always that bit of tension and usually among adults. The teens and around that age usually don't give a damn. The adults though are just itching for any bit of symbolism.

I admit my own parents are guilty of this sometimes. They find bits of racism in things I would never suspect, but they're too used to the days of being snubbed or something like that.

I'm sorry if the calls of racism are unintentional. You need to get your friends to explain the situation and hopefully cooler heads will prevail.

Is it inappropriate if I link anything relating to that dancing banana thing?

OT: The media just wants numbers. Credibility be damned.

Isn't that what the news does though? They like to make their audience angry over stuff that doesn't involve them at all. Either way I feel sorry for you because this situation doesn't sound fun for anyone.

I hate to sound like an arse, but please read the entire OP before jumping to conclusions.

Selling the news, eh?

I'd go with that, news is all about shock value these days. Facts be damned, we need some jaws hitting the floor! Intellectually stimulating stories filled with spirited debate? What are we, a library!?

FOX mother fucking news I bet.
No Yahoo. Well whatever.

This whole thing seems to be as the norm now, people overreacting to nothing.

Jur-nal-iss-tik in-teh-grit-tee? Wat's that lol

Also, bananas imply what? That black people are monkeys? HOW DOES THAT EVEN

Please tell me this is sarcasm unless you think they were wearing banana costumes to school sporting events for years as some kind of ultra long term planned racist attack against the opposing team.

OT - Shoddy journalism to stir up controversy and get more views? I wish I was shocked.

My next door Neighbor made national news once. It wasn't a good thing. He blew up abortion clinics and then robed banks. Ha I win.

To be honest, that would be a pretty awesome prank if that is what was going on. I would totally give those guys a high-five, even though they're racists.

OT- Yahoo is the shithole of all online news sources. I hate them so much. It is the only news source where the most knowledgeable individuals contributing to the article are the commenters in the sports section.

Not necessarily. You can still email the various news outlets covering it. You can respond in comments sections on news articles. You can email (or call preferably) your local New's stations tip line. If you're a particularly brave soul with a webcam you can post video responses to any Youtube videos about it. You could start a Facebook group and issue a call to former alumni to help defend the banana suits. There's plenty you can do and in today's internet social media age it's never been easier.

Ok, so, just because a few people were offended, we have to stop everyone else from having fun and ruin the whole thing for those who weren't offended? How is that a good idea?
