How often do you decide not to post to avoid CAPTCHA?

Why is it lazy to type out a post and then not post it, regardless of the reason?

Not wanting to post just because is fine. But this is related to a specific reason.

Not wanting to post to avoid a captcha is ridiculously lazy.

Right...whatever you say.

Lol, 1st world 'problem' much?
Never, honestly, it has never deterred me from posting.
I may have a lot of self-confidence issues, but i'm pretty sure i can jump over the hurdle that is 'Captchas'
Fairly easy thing to do.

Also, if you get PubClub they no longer affect you.

I have never avoided posting due to captcha though, i will not post if i feel my opinion or input will not contribute in anyway. Captcha has never bugged me unless its during registration, i always get it wrong in that situation.

Wait... captchas on this site are mainly blackmail to get people to sign up for the Pub Club? Somebody call Jim Sterling. The Escapist is as bad as Ubisoft.

Crono1973:

Right...whatever you say.

That would be the case if I was the only one with this opinion, but a few people seem to agree with me.

It is a few letters you need to read and input into a box. It takes more cognitive effort to form a coherent sentence, unless you have some kind of reading difficulty. If you do, I'm sorry.

You guys have to worry about CAPTCHA? Damn, that sucks. :P

Just pony up the money for Pub Club, and then you'll never have to worry about it. :)

I think a sentence is much easier to form but that is because I don't have a reading problem. Also, many CAPTCHAS require the refresh button because they are unreadable and of the ones that are readable, it's certainly much harder to read them than reading a sentence, that is the point of CAPTCHA though isn't it? To distort the word so that a bot can't read it?

I few people seem to agree with me too, so what...I am not keeping score, are you?

Why create a thread if you're only extracting from the people who agree with you? 'Right... whatever you say' comes off as 'in one ear, out the other'. That is the point of a forum right? Getting different viewpoints of a single topic or opinion?

I've only come across a small handful of captchas that were unreadable. In all cases, I hit the refresh button and get presented with something that is fairly easy to read or interpret. Compared to some of the other captcha systems out there, this one is one of the better ones. I have never spent longer than a few seconds inputing a captcha on this site.

In the past, I have been given captchas on other sites that would take me a good few minutes to properly decipher. And I'd do them because they were usually things I'd want, like a purchase or account creation.

I really don't understand why this is such a big deal to some people. Isn't the internet convenient enough?

Never, because I'm an elitist snob* member of the Pub Club and we don't get Captcha!

*Disclaimer: That was a joke aimed at myself and not the other members of the PC!

Sober Thal:
Before I joined the Pub Club, it never caused me to not post.

That just sounds silly. It takes a few seconds to type, no big deal.

Same here. Although I think there should be a threshold to cross where they stop appearing as frequently (maybe 1000 but they wouldn't tell you when); it wasn't that big of an inconvenience.

Pubclub is worth it for me because I enjoy custom titles and ad free content but the best part is giving back to the site I love.

And before the "You don't know how bad it has gotten man!" argument springs up, I still do get captcha's on my alternative account.

Only problem I have is that I have google scripts blocked with noscript, so if there ever is a capcha than I won't know until I hit "post" and get an error. Than I have to CTRL+C my post, temp allow google, refresh, input capcha and re-block said scripts untill next time. LOL!

I guess being called Lazy or stupid or idiot makes me unwilling to talk with someone and I do talk to people who don't mind the captchas. I am talking to you aren't I?

It's a big deal because it is unnecessary. The mods here are more than capable of dealing with spammers but instead they use CAPTCHA so they can spend more time issuing warnings for low content posts. You were not a spammer yesterday, you aren't today and the chances of you becoming one tomorrow are slim to none. Therefore, testing you every 20 posts is not necessary.

all the time, im practically a mute online now

Glorious Pub Club Master Race, unite!

Nah, even before I joined the Pub Club, captcha never really bothered me. Hell, I even got a few laughs from it sometimes.

If it takes more than one attempt I give up.

I just got something along the lines of "fendtedly water"

I never called you stupid or an idiot once. Laziness has nothing to do with intelligence.

I agree with that point about continuous testing. But I understand why mods want to have it in place to prevent low content posts. Even with this system in place, I still see one word responses or a sentence consisting of maybe 3 or 4 words. It does come off as rather spammy.

My argument was about doing the captcha itself. It really isn't a big deal.

Never. I don't find them very annoying. I got one just one for this comment. Didn't bother me.

This or I agree is not spammy. What the fuck is wrong with people who think these responses are in any way bad. There is no need for people to waste time typing filler when all they really want to say us: "I agree with this post".

Because that defeats the purpose of a thread.

Anyone can simply agree or disagree, that's why there are polls. Forums are used for discussion. 'I agree' is not a discussion, it's a response. You can't argue 'I agree' because there is no content backing it up.

If you said 'I agree' and then gave reasons, then people can either back your reasoning up or disagree with the content you present.

Not every post has to be debatable. Where did you get this idea that every post had to push the conversation to the next level? It's ok to agree with someone and it's BS to have to provide filler just to avoid a warning.

The name of this forum is 'Off-Topic Discussion'

A discussion implies that there is in fact, a discussion.

I got pub club so I payed $20 to get all the cool features and no captchas was one of the sweeter ones but before I got pub club it never stopped me from posting before since it only took a few seconds to type out.

Agreeing with someone doesn't stifle discussion, it just doesn't encourage it. It's neutral and is perfectly acceptable on most forums, just not this one.

Let's just agree to disagree.

That's a fair point.

I agree to disagree.

Never. I really don't understand why some people take such an issue with them. When I first started posting here, and saw people complaining about them, I was dreading them. I half expected them to be two page novels written in Hebrew which you had to translate. But a couple words? No, that is not enough to ruin my day and burst a blood vessel.

I agree with the other posters who said: if you think your post is not worth the effort to fill in the captcha, then maybe it is better you do not post the comment at all.

GigaHz:

Crono1973:
Simple question, how often do you decide that you aren't interested in deciphering another captcha and just decide not to post?

Why bother to write a response on an internet forum and decide near the end it isn't worth doing because you need to decipher a captcha?

That's the weirdest form of laziness I've ever read. It would be like writing a song in sheet music and then scrapping it after discovering you need to put a cap on your pen.

Oh my god, that's almost too funny to be allowed :D

What the hell was the OP suspended for? I read his post three times and still can't figure out why, haha.

Caramel Frappe:
Refreshing the page while having your post copied (the words highlighted and pressing the Ctrl + C) then you should be all set right?

Just to make both of your lives easier - you can install the add-on Lazarus that autosaves text in textboxes/forms for you. Even if you ever lose the text (Ctrl+C something else by mistake, close the tab, PC shuts down/restarts, etc) you'll be able to recover it in about a second. You can find the add-on for Firefox and Chrome, also I think there is something for Opera.

Caramel Frappe:
But yeah once on youtube I got a captcha that had a symbol at the end which I had no keys to match it. So that sucked.

And' I'll help you some more, as well as several other people that mentioned similar experiences: you can misspell words - you're allowed 2-3 mistakes, I think. Also, you only need one of the words, you can usually pick it up easily (the one with the blot for a background) - it doesn't matter what you type for the other. If you do get something you literally cannot type[1], then it's the optional word.

[1] I once got a mathematical formula only 3 of the characters were actually possible to write even after including the all ASCII symbols and other languages

Never. I do however often put the word "boobies" down in place of the word it doesn't already know. Yeah, I know...

I do it on occasions if I don't value the content of my post enough. If I feel like I am in a hurry to leave, don't have anything to add to the thread that hasn't already been said the captcha is a great way to prevent me from posting.
