Poll: If you had to, what position in the Armed Forces would you take? Pages 1 2 3 4 NEXT
I was about to go into the Air Force as an officer. That didn't pan out for various reasons -_- I guess I will choose that.
since they probably wouldnt give me a gun Id end up in some kind of suport role... ...no complaints there
Most of the support roles take weapons training if memory serves. Air Force is my plan B if shit hits the fan, it tends to be one of the more high tech branches, that's not out on a boat for ages.
Engineer. I heard a joke that the Australian army are really just combat engineers.
I remember reading in one of the papers that will be changing. We might see woman from Australia serving on the frontline in a few years.
I'm way too useless for the military to even be considered, I mean my physical strength is equal to that of a mouse and my vision is damn near blind without my glasses and even with them my vision goes out at random moments on a related note my aim is completely worthless at least with a bow, so definitely a non-combat role, given my ability to bake probably a cook.
Well since Armor and air force is out of the question for me. I've always wanted to be on an artillery piece.
yeah, I remember when there was alot of debate on the topic my only problem with it would be if they "changed" or "lowered" the standards and such to allow more women in because frontline combat is fucking frontline combat, not the place to make a PC statment
Air force man. Highway to the danger zone Plus with the increase in drones vs maneed vehicles my gaming skills will be able to be used =D
Can I just be the commander-in-chief? Does that count? But more seriously, looking at: http://www.usace.army.mil/Careers.aspx I'd say I'd go with engineer. I'm a computer engineering major which is nearly like trying to double major in electrical engineering and computer science. So going with some kind of an electrical engineering related position should be doable.
Where is the Army Warrant Officer option? Heck, it's what I'm in the middle of applying for. Helicopters are just so cool.
Awesome, Top Gun reference. Those guys were Navy, though. Not Air Force. Anywho... I voted Air Force. Depending on specialization within the branch, it's where I'd be least likely to get shot at and least likely to be forced to shoot anyone else.
Cooks don't get shot, so I'd probably pick cook. If I were in any other position, I would be dead in no time flat. If I had the ability, I would be a sniper, because sniping is cool, and I would be extremely far away from anyone I shot, which would make it easier on the psyche.
Hardly... that 10x scope makes it very personal.
Sniper because I'm cold and calculating, and people tend not to notice that I exist.
I imagine the best use of my skills would be logistics. It ain't pretty or heroic, but soldiers need their supplies on time and in the right place!! I have actually been seriously considering this, I know I can work damn hard when I have to but in general am quite lazy... it would be good to have some real discipline instilled!
Well, considering I am already Royal Australian Corp of Transport, there's your answer.
Id rather save lives than take them so....Combat engineer. Not too keen on medic...
The Australia Defence Association (ADA) says it is concerned there will be a disproportionate number of female casualties if women are allowed to serve in all frontline combat roles. The standards wouldn't be lowered. Defence Minister Stephen Smith said "no diminution of standards". Thats seems to only major reason against females in the frontline. Which doesn't make sense. If no standards are lowered that wouldn't be an issue.
Sniper, because I love looking at all the action...from a mile away.
Engineer, you don't have to enter the battlefield. You don't have to fight as a cook either, but you're going to be considered a grunt far more than an engineer.
Well considering I've got an interview coming up in a few months for the army and specifically "rifleman" I'll go with grunt. So fucking keen. Weeks not months.
combat medic I have very few of the skills necessary other than a compassion for my fellow man but I guess that's what basic training is for.
So the escapist armed forces would be mainly snipers and engineers? Faire enough, I chose sniper anyway.
Pfff ninja/assassin of course. In all seriousness, a marksman. You have the range but you are close to the fight.
I actually did have to join and I have a position for me in case of war. I'm a clerk in the Air Force cadre. An office job with the high ups is absolutely fine with me. I should be relatively safe, and that work isn't very physically demanding at all. It is important work, sure, the lists and numbers need to be right. But no actual fighting, so that's nice. I wasn't a big fan of the basic training and the "soldierly" things.
I want to be that guy that tests tanks before they get shipped off. That would be the best armed forces job ever.
Cook. | |
If it wasn't for my knees giving me grief whenever I had to do something strenuous, I probably would've joined the Armed Forces, but to be more of the Elite Forces, or other top-tier operator.
Cooking is safe. | |
I considered doing medicine then joining the army as a Battlefield Surgeon but i have arthritis so i can't pass the army medical now, also i didn't study medicine.
Sniper or grunt - I know jack-shit about any other job in the military, so I might as well do the ones that I actually know about.
Lol I actually am a medic in the US Army. It's not all its cracked up to be though.
The poll list is quite silly, to put it mildly... I'm an artillery observer in reserve so I think I'll stick with that.
I'll take the cook. I would have said engineer/techie, but my skills aren't up to scratch. No way no how would I want to use a gun. Unless the enemy is storming into the base, killing everyone indiscriminately, I'm not shooting a gun, ever.

So I have no intention of ever joining the armed forces, I'm in no way a pacifist but you'll never here me advocate war either.
That said I (like most people) have a tremendous amount of respect for serviceman and the work they do, which got me wondering...
If, for some hypothetical example, you had to join the armed forces, what position would you take? I'll include as many as I can on the poll - we'll exclude ranks.
Personally I'd like to work on a sub, my maths, physics and geography skills could be put to good use and I'm not gonna lie, from an ignorant, civilian perspective, it looks sorta fun. (The being in a submarine bit, not the war bit).
EDIT: Forgot land vehicle corps, just select engineer if you wanna be in a Tank Company etc. :P
