Sports and you.

Oh man, where do i begin...
I think the first actual sport i took up was soccer (around age 5-7)

Later on i started losing interest in that and found a new (ever-lasting) love of basketball and have been into it for the better part of my life now. (9 and onwards)

There was also a period when i went nuts, doing a lot of track-and-field type stuff, which was great fun (like around age 15 for a year). Was some of the hardest training i've ever done and i loved it.

As for the sports that i enjoy watching and know something about:
Well i watch the NBA recaps daily and keep up to date with the goings-on.

Whenever i hear the word "Olympics" i get all giddy, because once i realised the kind of effort needed to do some of the events (such as discus, pole vaulting, etc), i really learned to appreciate all of it.

I also won't shy away from watching a good tennis match or football game (of the american variety).

Also, i never play any of the fantasy sports, because they're boring as all hell to me.

I love some sports but hate others
I used to play and enjoy Rugby sevens and hockey, but now I much prefer rowing and sailing but still watch your silly ground sports Xp.

been picked to represent the Sea Cadets in Field gun running this year again... should be fun.

I'm a big fan of marital arts in general, as well as climbing, fencing, squash, swimming, and anything that involves me being knackered or bruised. Don't know what it is, but the feeling of having worn myself out until it hurts makes me feel better the rest of the week.

Hence, my injured ankle is making me stir-crazy. D=

I played Judo as a kid, stopped a few years later I took a few Aikido classes and quit that too.
as of now I don,t do any sports.

I'm really hoping for the best with the Canucks, last year was a major upset, there's no reason why the Bruins should have won the way the Canucks played the entire year. Looks like they're still going strong this year though.

Though, it's really horrible to see them suddenly choking the past few weeks.

TheYellowCellPhone:
I only do sports in a completely casual, if-you-expect-me-to-take-this-seriously-then-get-fucked sense. I only do it with my chums, usually for no longer than an hour (and trust me, I'm done by the fifteen minute mark), with the teams being incredibly small and stacked, and half the rules being disregarded because of the previous fact.

I have close to never sat down voluntarily during a sports airing, unless it's with friends who want to watch it, or there's something hilarious that I know is going to happen.

I don't like sports. Swimming, (American) football, soccer, track and field, all of it. I've only done two sports in a more professional sense (school), soccer because I was forced and football that I chose to do after all the pressure I was given, and football I gave up before the first game because I was understanding something between jack and shit. Not unfit, trust me; I do rock climbing, marching band, the occasional run, sometimes I lift weights. But sports? Fuck them.

im more or less of this opinion. Although i prefer to swim than football.

ace_of_something:

So... what sports do you like to watch or were involved in? Do you do fantasy leagues?

Like to watch? I watch Football religiously, both college and the NFL. I drop 300 bucks a year to get the DirecTV Sunday Ticket so I can watch as many games as humanly possible. I also watch baseball more casually. Beyond that I will watch college basketball around the tournament, NBA basketball if nothing else is on, and I enjoy watching bowling of all things on Sunday's after football season.

Now for fantasy leagues? I'm a HUGE fantasy football junkie. Last year I was in six fantasy football leagues and 2 eliminator pools. Won 2 and made it to the playoffs in 4 of my 6 leagues and lost both pools on the same week due to over thinking my picks. My living room is like a war room on Sundays. I have two computer monitors up, my laptop going, and my iPad going as well just to keep track of my fantasy teams.

As far as teams I support I like the Ravens when it comes to the NFL, Notre Dame in college football, The Cubs/Red Sox in baseball, and The Bulls in the NBA.

Pfft, who needs sports?

Not me obviously :3

I player field hockey when I was a kid until I was suspended when I was 9. Then I took up Association football because the rules and roles are quite similar although you need a different skill set, I wasn't great but I found a home in defense. I played that until about 14 when I started surfing and I did that up until I wrecked my knee (not surfing, I was working). I still ride a longboard occasionally, but mostly I am confined to a shark biscuit, much to my shame.

I don't watch many sports, I only really enjoy soccer at a national level, and friendlies don't cut it for me. I'll watch the occasional A-League game but my interest only really peaks when the World Cup qualifiers start. I watch a little motor racing, but I think it is a little too predictable these days, all the drivers are robots and no-one does anything stupid/crazy/exciting anymore (F1 needs another Alesi).

My main sport to watch is Australian Rules Football, which I disliked as a kid. Twenty years ago I fell in with a bad crowd, or rather they where a good crowd who fell in with me, they all loved footy and they got me into it. I'll usually watch one game a week during footy season.

I swim, but nowhere at all competitively, just for some low impact exercise, my knee flares up if I run too much.

I played football (soccer) as a kid into my early teens as it just seems mandatory for urban based Irish kids to play football. I didn't mind, but before I turned 15 I lost all interest and haven't played since.

I was an avid swimmer in my teens as well, although never competitevly(spelling?), so I don't know if it counts. I would just do an hour or so of half - casual laps. Unfortunatly, the gym where the pool was was shut down when I was 15 or 16, and I live miles away from any other pool. I didn't swim again for a couple of years after, but when I finally moved out I gradually got back into it. I'm not as keen about it as I was back then, though.

Finally, I'm also big into Tae Kwon Do. I done it as a young kid (from 6 to 12 - ish) but hated it. Can't remember why. When I went to college though, I decided to give it another shot, and now its pretty much consumed my life. I practice 4 times a week for 2 hours, and attend a competition at least twice a month (some big, some small). I have an ankle injury at the moment though, so I'll be giving it a rest until... well, until the physio says so. Hopefully won't be too long.

As for spectating, I only have the patience to watch tennis or snooker, which I know sounds wierd. I get bored s***less watching rugby or football, two very dynamic games, but I can contently sit through static tennis and snooker (I know tennis isn't a static sport, but watching makes it seem to be). I can't really explain it.

If it isn't Fencing then it's shit and boring. Then again, I grew up playing team based sports where I always ended up on... "that" team. You know, the one with a permanent losing streak and full of uncommunicative, unathletic, and/or non-confrontational kids. A sport where I don't have to rely on incompetent boobs is the only sport I need.

I watch Wimbledon (tennis) when it's on, otherwise I don't really follow the sport.

I might, stress might, watch some of the Olympics this summer, seeing as it is being hosted by my capital city.

Aris Khandr:
Arsenal supporter, as my Firefox layout will attest to.

Go Robin! Pity he didn't score at Goodison, kinda deserved it but Ramsey fluffed his lines a bit during that match...

Also a football supporter... though of a lesser London team (Fulham... and how did we lose 0-3 to Swansea?!).

Rugby - Saracens/England
Cricket - ECCC/England

s'bout it... used to shoot (archery) before my back packed in... :(

I used to play American Football in HS, since then I only watch. Hail to the Redskins! When I care enough to watch baseball I root for the Baltimore Orioles. Oh and Go Caps!

ace_of_something:
In this review here We got a bit of a 'the escapist don't know sports.'

Now, I think that's just a silly assumption. Most gamers I know love at least a sport or two. Maybe it's because I'm in one of the reddest states in the nation where even the cityfolk behave like countryfolk.

So... what sports do you like to watch or were involved in? Do you do fantasy leagues?

In High School my twin brother and I were both cornerbacks and occasionally Offensive guards (it was a small rural team you had to go both ways). We also played baseball I was a 3rd basemen my twin brother was a 1st basemen. (I'm right handed he's left handed). FYI My highschool's colors were Baby Blue, Black and silver accents. So any fantasy team I make has the same colors/mascot
I've always loved hockey and wished I grew up in a larger wealthy community where it could've been played. It's probably my favorite sport to go to a bar and watch with buddies.
Anyway.
Go Chiefs!
Go Twins!
Go Blackhawks!

Played baseball, soccer, football, and ice hockey as a kid then teen. Now, I'm a pretty sedentary gamer who only really follows hockey and football. Passing interest in a couple of football teams. But only follow teams in hockey. Season tix to my hometown minor league hockey team (Go Thunder.) And travel once or twice a year to watch my NHL team.

Blackhawk Nation

Some sports can be fun to play, with the right people (a sport I like and people I enjoy playing it with is a very hard combo to find, for me)... but I never understood the desire to "follow" and root for teams and players... I mean, unless you know the guys/gals or something.

Additionally, I've always preferred solo challenges. Olympic performances and serious obstacle courses such as Sasuke interest me far more than any team sport.
I'm kinda the same way with video games.

I watch football (Tottenham Hotspur), rugby union (London Irish), cricket (Kent) as well as F1, WRC, tennis and if it's on squash, hockey, athletics and American Football (Bucs).

I have played rugby and cricket but now play mostly football, squash and badminton.

Oh and martial arts.

Well, I've always loved baseball as at least the Americans, some canadians and some of the more aware of baseball brits can tell by my username. I play 2nd base and yes, I am a Mets fan.

ElPatron:
Sports are awesome. Most team sports suck, though.

MysticToast:
The only physical activity I enjoy doing is Airsoft.

I despise sports for a number of reasons as well.

Weird. Airsoft is "supposed" to be the last resort to competition junkies who can't enjoy the lack of direct competition in other sports.

Huh. I've never heard that one before. I just really enjoy doing it.

MysticToast:
Huh. I've never heard that one before. I just really enjoy doing it.

I suppose it's a common misconception, then. Probably because airsoft is usually related to mountaineering, rock climbing and trekking.

Logiclul:
I'm a Point Guard in basketball
I'll be playing DB (I want to play Free Safety but not tall enough, so probably CB) in Football

I'm a fan of Baltimore Ravens, Boston Celtics, and Sounders FC.

I love sports, play them watch them read about them. I'd play soccer if I were any good; the only thing I wouldn't play is Baseball because I like to be running and be getting an actual workout instead of sitting on a bench or standing in a field for 95% of the game.

Also I always play competitively and to win; granted I don't get upset or mad at anyone if we're losing or they aren't taking it seriously, but I tend not to play with nonserious players anyway so I haven't ran into the problem of someone on my team loling and just dicking around.

Oh and as far as fantasy sports go? I am okay at it but not great and don't really care about it. For instance I didn't fill out a college bracket (which all of the people who know nothing about basketball are doing at my school; it's funny to look at their bracket and tell them why a couple of their picks are so polar from right it's funny) and only have done Fantasy Football once.

Holy crap; Cornerback and Guard? Either you had massive cornerbacks who got burned all day, or you had tiny linemen who got stepped on all day. Talk about a small player pool! :D

My brother and I are 6'6" and have stocky builds if that answers your question. :-p Most of the kids in my town were pretty big because like 95% descended from various Scandinavian cultures. My graduating class had 36 in it and 22 of them were girls (Our kicker was a girl actually). We didn't have varsity or JV because you needed all four grades to fill out the various teams.

Go Twins!

You're a Twins fan? Like, My Minnesota Twins? I'm sorry...

I liked the since I was a kid because my uncle lived up there and would take us to games. Plus, well, I'm a twin so it only made sense.

It can be heartbreaking to be a Twins fan but I will persevere.

As a general rule I know nothing about the major Sports out there.
I went to my first baseball game in well over a decade a few weeks ago and it was quite possibly the most boring thing I've ever sat through.

My friends are into Football so I end up watching the occasional game but I have no damn idea what's going on half the time.

The only sport I really follow is Hockey and I would be lying if I said I follow it to any great degree. I don't know what team is in what conference, I don't know anything about the playoff selection process I just know that once the season starts I spend a noticeably larger portion of my free time watching "the game."

I also really like Boxing.
I'm a bigger fan of the Heavyweight fights though and in recent years the focus of the sport has turned it's focus to the Featherweight and Welterweight divisions so I don't watch as much as I used to.

I play and watch tennis on occasion, I also have a causal interest in watching basketball, like maybe a game every other week. My family is also big into hockey, so sometimes I will watch it with them. Watching sports has to be accompanied by something else though, like conversation or dicking around on the internet. It is nice because it doesn't require your full attention at all times to follow.

Go Twins!

You're a Twins fan? Like, My Minnesota Twins? I'm sorry...

Why are you apologizing to him? Stop feeling sorry for yourselves and be glad you guys aren't Mariners fans like me. There is nothing as soul crushing as watching your team lose 17 games in a row... My motto when it comes to being a Mariners fan is "We can't suck forever". Also, the M's have the best commercials in all of baseball.

Hey at least you guys didn't set the American League record for most losses in a season, or blow a 3 game lead with 4 games left, or have back-to-back-to-back-to-back second half choke jobs.

Posted twice. Ignore

I love sports. I played any sport I could get into(any one that would let me on the team) in high school. I was best at football(the American kind, it still feels wierd needing to clarify that), but also played the other kind of football, basketball, baseball and threw(I guess "putted" is the correct term) the shot. I played offensive guard/tackle in football and that accounts for how beaten up my body is. Also, sports were my link to gaming for the longest time(now I don't own any sport titles), so I may complain about Madden each year just being a roster update, but that led me to where I am now.
As far as favorite teams go: Go Saints! Go Braves! Go Cetlics!(yeah yeah, one of these things is not like the others)

I watch football (fan of Dundee United, but I watch a variety of other leagues as well) and hockey (Dundee Stars, no NHL team but my favourite player is Brodeur so I watch New Jersey Devils when I can) as much as possible and play football sometimes. I also try to watch the Superbowl every year with friends but that's for the whole spectacle of it more than the actual game itself as I don't watch American Football besides it.

I play tennis and badmition, also defensive lineman in football.

Thats about it though. Yankees ruined baseball for me, riots ruined soccor for me. Tis sad.

I teach judo every week. I have been doing judo for roughly 14 years. Yes judo is both a sport and martial art believe it or not

I like playing sports. I play rugby, taking a hiatus from actual games until the next year of uni for personal reasons (commitment basically, I just didn't have the time these last two years) but I'll be playing properly from then again. I also row a lot, I can't be on the team because they need even more commitment than the rugby squad and there just isn't the time to physically do both but I join them for training.
I also play a little tennis, football and squash but I'm decidedly mediocre there, it's for my enjoyment and little else.

I watch a little football too and I watch a good deal of rugby, mostly international, I'm not a big fan of club rugby.

So yeah, I'm a sports fan I guess, I like playing it, I'm up for watching a game of most sports.

I think there's this weird assumption that people are sporty or nerdy or whatever but it's silly. Most of the rugby players I've known have enjoyed a game and probably about half play videogames beyond the obvious ones like CoD. I don't know if it's a US thing, the categorising of people as exclusively one thing but it's really rare for a gamer to be just a gamer here, most do other stuff too. I can think of one guy who doesn't do sports or go out or play music, 'all' he does is game and even that is being unfair because he reads a hell of a lot...

I never liked sports. Didn't help that even when I was capable and on teams nobody would let me do anything and deliberately didn't pass to me.

Besides, I hate the attitude around sports. People throwing rage faces over their chosen team not winning. Last time I discussed sports with people the two people in the discussion said who they supported and one of them snidely pointed out how they hadn't met many people who support the other person's team.
My mental response to that was a "Congratulations, you've managed to point out the stupidity of simply supporting the team you grew up next to by pretending it's based on skill and then pointing out that you haven't met many people from Derby."

I play Rugby Union, Rugby League, and Ice Hockey. I've also Played Cricket and Boxed a little in the past.

I try to keep pretty busy.

I also watch all of the above, as well as American Football... Can't stand Association Football though, it simply angers me.

Generally speaking, I love sports, and support my teams passionately - but I really get frustrated by people who take it too seriously, and people who refuse to admit that their team can do no wrong... Glory supporters are pretty irritating as well, but then every single team I support (except the Detroit Red Wings) is shit, so I've very little to celebrate.

Speaking of teams... Go: Red Wings, Castleford Tigers, Leeds Carnegie, Sheffield Steelers, Yorkshire CCC and the SF 49ers!

edit

I used to play softball when I was a kid, got bored of it after a while. I then did Tae Kwon Do for a few years later on. Got half-way through the ranks and got bored. I even did a year of fencing in college. College work started to pile up so I couldn't find the time to continue. I tended to spend much more time in artsy activities like band, drama club, and anime club.

As for sports I like to watch, personally I'm a hockey gal, and I far prefer going to the actual games than watching them on TV.
