The online leaderless collective of hacktivists and geeks known as Anonymous has taken up a new cause, sex workers right. Specifically, the group has taken issue with the decision by a Minnesota high-school's decision to ban Megan Piper, porn star, from attending Prom night as a guest after she accepted an invitation from 18-year old student Mike Stone on the condition that he pay her air fare. Anonymous has yet to take any action against the school, which they accuse of "demonizing sex workers."

Just days after porn star Megan Piper accepted a prom invitation from Minnesota teen, Mike Stone, the school principal called his parents to let them know he was seeking adult film stars a dates on Twitter. Piper and other porn stars were banned from attending the high school prom because of school regulations. Now Anonymous is stepping into the fray, and accusing the school of demonizing sex workers

Based on their previous cyber-protests, the operation will likely involve targeting the website(s) of the school with a proxy DDoS attack to knock them temporarily offline. They may also attempt to hack the sites and deface them with a message in support of Megan Piper in the form of a video or text. The cause has been taken up on Twitter with the hashtag #OpLulzProm used to link all the corresponding Tweets together.

The most important messages have also been posted together at anonymissexpress.com to provide a summary of the formation of this particular operation so that interested Anonymous members can dive right in and participate. Some Twitter messages link to the homepage of School District 622 where Mike Stone is a student, as well as the login page for what appears to be the school's Infinite Campus account used by teachers and administrators, suggesting that these two pages may be Anonymous's primary target. Another Twitter message with the #OpLulzProm hashtag linked to a photograph of Patty Phillips, the superintendent District 622 who announced the school's decision to ban Piper from prom.

If you wish to know more about the details along with what Anonymous has done in the past, just click onto the article's link above. So fellow Escapists, what do you think? Is it a noble cause or is it something Anonymous shouldn't do?

I thank KingWein22 for making a thread about the school denying Megan (Click Here) and Marik2 for linking me the article about Anonymous.

I think the real story here is with Mike Stone, regardless of how this ends, he can officially add "successfully invited porn star to be my date for Prom" to his list of lifetime achievements. If that doesn't earn you the respect of your peers, your peers aren't from this planet.

As to my opinion on Anonymous, well I think this is rather a step down from taking down the sites of people trying to kill union rights, but a step up from picking on Greece. In all this ia a prett minor incident with very little overall effect on anything actualy significant. So while I roll my eyes at their antics, I can't really bring myself to care.

Porn stars have feelings too!!!

and Sasha Grey is better!!

You know this is probably going to move Ms Piper way up in the Porn Star rankings. I mean I had never heard of her before this.

Not that I ever watch porn >_> <_< nope...never...what is porn anyways?

Really, really...I-don't-know-what news. I'm sure the school would be absolutely crushed if their website is brought down. After all the two people that probably use it would be denied that right.

I'm not sure if that's sad or...sadder. Anon have seen better days. There is fighting for stuff and there is just doing pointless stuff over idiocy.

Dunno, amongst those peers there might be girls and that might not earn their respect. More like "pity". But it depends on what sort of girls he hangs around with.

Maybe so, but I would defend the porn star too one way or another. Sure I wouldn't do so by hacking a school's website (cause really like you said who uses it other then maybe 1-2 staff) but rather I would send the principal a letter with why it's wrong to deny people rights and have over a 1,000 signatures to go with it. That way, the principal has a lot to think about. It'd be like denying homosexuals the right to attend prom because.. well, they're into men. That's wrong to me and denying a porn star is the same thing except maybe it applies to her age too- but still.

This is dumb. The school is in charge of the event. If they can choose to bar a student from attending, they sure can bar someone they didn't invite. Yes, Mr. Stone was allowed to invite a guest, but a porn star was obviously not considered an appropriate guest. I'm sure the school board didn't make that rule assuming someone would try that. Anonymous is completely wrong here. If he/she held a party, would he/she not have the right to bar someone from attending?

I don't know about the school you go/went to, but the school I got to has most of it's information, assignments and important shit going down on a website. It also has it's own email service for each student, so taking a website down could be catastrophic.

LOL you could have just talked about this on the other thread and not make a separate thread about it :P

She looks like she didn't have ill intentions about doing this for publicity, she just wanted to go since she never had the chance to go to one.

Well, I agree that they shouldn't bar Megan Piper just because she appeared on adult movies. What's she going to do - start an orgy? I'm pretty sure she'd like to be paid to do that. Or would she hand pick new potential colleagues? I doubt it.

That's why I called the matter "idiocy". There is no need to go so up in arms over nothing.

But schools love to go up in arms over nothing. It's probably all the moral guardians they have to please. If it wasn't the school, one of the parents would surely have kicked up a huge fuss over the issue - how dare they allow porn to happen to the kids! You know the type - the same that were butthurt when Sasha Grey went to read a book to some children. A retired porn actress read a book. A book! How dare she?! Now their poor fragile minds are filled with dongs and boobs because of her!

I would understand if the school went out to the parents and said "Well, we have Megan Piper coming to the prom, anybody against?" - then they could have blamed the whole thing on the parents, rather than their own retardation.

However, I'd like to imagine that the school goes to the parents and tells them about Megan Piper, only for all the moms to be confused who she is and all the dads being uncomfortable mentioning whether they know her or not.

Nope, our website definitely sucked. It was there only because the school needed web presence, since "Everybody has to have a website!" and was not more than a brochure site.

But I did look up that school's website - they seem to have a student, staff and parent portals. As well as webmail. Also, it's not the website for the school itself, it's a website for a school district with 13 schools. So it looks more important than I assumed initially.

It's actually an Easter Egg within Mass Effect 3. You have to get ether full bar Paragon or full bar Renegade (being 100%, you can't have 1% of the opposite involved or else you can't unlock it) in order to have this option in your Private Quarters. Also you have to fulfill all N7 missions with Tali involved or else you can't unlock it ether.

Thanks for looking into the Easter Egg and also I really appreciate you complimenting my Avatar of course! :}

Well that's the thing.. this porn star is also retired now. Not to mention she's not even doing this as a public event to get more popular but rather she's making up lost time since she never got the chance to attend Prom. So the school denying her that is pretty messed up plus everyone at Prom will be to occupied with their own dates to get any ideas about sexuality.

I guess you can say the school doesn't want to be sued by some parents who are offended that the school allowed porn stars into the prom thinking their own kids will be exposed to sexual services or what not. But really she's going to prom as a date and nothing more.. however what the guy who invited her could do is take her out on a prom night dinner. That's what I did instead of attending prom.

image

Anyway, I don't personally see what would've been wrong with having the Piper person there, so long as she didn't start rehearsing for her next role during the prom.

Props to the guy for managing to invite a porn star to his prom though.

Well, precisely why it's idiocy. They play the "porn star" card when she doesn't go there in that role. Last I checked, the presence of people who have done sex (or have done sex in front of a camera) doesn't cause moral breakdowns in the immediate vicinity. Doesn't even cause moral slips. Doesn't affect other people much. And most of all, they are all adults, aren't they?

I guess, even the other parents aren't concerned - it's a matter between that Mike guy and his parents to settle. In my view, the school should have contacted the Stones (ha, ha by the way - "the stones") and just said "Yo! Your son actually got a date with a porn star. Congrads for lil' Mikey, by the way. But yo' cool with that?" and that's it. Who somebody goes with on the prom shouldn't matter. Well it shouldn't in that specific case - on our prom we had "only people from this school" rule, for example. I don't see Megan Piper falling under "the visit is not in the best interest of students, employees or the school district." Unless you interpret it really weirdly - as in, "the visit should be in the best interests only, so it shouldn't be in conflict or even impartial to the interests".

All I want to know is when Gloria Allred will show up for all this. Cases like this are sort of her forte and I'm surprised that she has yet to make an appearance.

Also, I have a feeling that this will be a future episode/parody for South Park.

Valanthe:

This is just too epic.
That guy is THE MAN hahahaahaha
awesome kid is awesome.

Well, anonymous doing something that I can agree with. Wow. I personally also think it's ridiculous that this girl is discriminated against based on the career she has chosen to do. When she isn't being filmed on set, she is just as normal and have all the same rights as everyone else. As long as she wore appropriate attire to the prom, I see absolutely no reason why she can't go with him.

Though I doubt hacking a website for a few hours is really going to change anything.

Boy, Anon will do ANYTHING for a little publicity, won't they?

Shameful.

We gotta find this kid... And give him his Awesomest Kid in America Award WOO!

Seriously, why does the school care?

Of course anon supports porn stars and paying for sex, its the only way they would get any.

I may not agree with you in letting her be at the prom, I think you're totally right about the fact that they should have forced the parents to decide.

Incidentally, despite my avatar I do not support Anonymous. Notum is latin for known so it's a joke.

Wolverine18:

Ha ZING!

But seriously, I can see both sides of this.

Whoatemysupper:
I may not agree with you in letting her be at the prom, I think you're totally right about the fact that they should have forced the parents to decide.

Perhaps you're right, I just don't see a compelling reason to not allow her - apparently it is possible to bring a date who isn't from the school. As I said, on my prom it wouldn't have mattered if somebody got a porn star to go with them or even the mayor - we had "this school only" policy...which was not that hard enforced, really, but it was still there.

As long as the date doesn't endanger anybody, I don't see why ban her. It would have been different, if somebody decided to bring a known sex offender to the prom, for example. I can see a reason not to allow them but Megan's biggest sin may be that she takes it up the butt (I haven't seen her porn, so I dunno). Well, in front of a camera. Still a person who isn't entirely defined by that alone.

I can see them not wanting extra attention from the media, but, frankly, fuck the media. They are just lazy if that's the case.

Whoatemysupper:
Incidentally, despite my avatar I do not support Anonymous. Notum is latin for known so it's a joke.

Cool, I was like "Fuck me, did I get Anon's attention?" :D

Meh. It's their school. People get banned from proms all over the country every year, and people only seem to take notice when it's a porn star.

And don't even get my started on the joke that is Anonymous.

But you're SUPPOSED to get some on prom night...

I dunno getting slut shaming out of our system seems like a legit goal to me.

The thing with prostitution is, just like with drugs, keeping it illegal only serves to aggravate the situation. Besides, the only reason prostitution is illegal is because moralist fundamentalists can't keep their bullshit in check.

Mike Stone sounds like a porn name. Prom [EDIT: sounds like] porn. THIS WAS MEANT TO BE!

this is simply another case of anonymous being anonymous. in fact this is the kind of shit I expect from them, as opposed to the more 'serious' protests. Anonymous' sort of semi-offical motto/mantra is 'for the lulz' and this has got to be one of the funniest things they have pulled so far. probably topped only by the Habbo raids. That was hilarious.

Yes, when you use loaded language like that, it's wrong. When you remove "slut" and "shaming" it becomes slightly more accurate. We have seen that even if somebody acts in porn they can still have other qualities and, furthermore, they don't necessarily "shame" everything around them by their mere presence.

EDIT:

Prom is an anagram of porn.

No, it's not. Prom is an anagram of porm. I have no idea what porm is.

I'm confused as to your meaning sir. Are you for treating porn stars as human beings or against it?
