Female metal/rock singers

I have just been on a paramore video (I have no idea why 'cos I don't like them) but I rad this comment on it "A rock band with a girl vocalist. AWESOMEEEE".

My immediate reaction was "that is clearly not true, there are loads like ...." then I blanked, I could not think of a single example. I do know there was a female guitar player in coal chamber though.

So feeling like my ipod is a just a little bit of a sausage fest I am asking you lovely people to recommend me some good female bands.

The thing is I have a very fussy musical taste, I the very heaviest stuff I like is hatebreed, so no cannibal corpse. My fav groups are slipknot, dope, seether, soil, mushroomhead ... anything around that kind of area.

Edit: Just thought of Pink and Avril but they are too ... pop-py for my taste.

There was a thread about a month ago (maybe) that was about a very similar topic, I recommend that you look there. Just look for "Women who Rawk" in the search bar and you should find it.

Really? I always have off topic and gaming discussion open at the same time and constantly refresh them. That one must have slipped by my radar, the little bugger!

I do apologize but I think I should be let off 'cos I never posted a single ME3 thread (tehehehe).

You're welcome.

Also Doro Pesch, but I'm assuming you already know about her.

Joan Jett, Within Temptation, The Sounds, Nightwish.

That was my thread. :P

There's some really good stuff in there too.

My two favs!! Maria Brink (ITM) and Christina Scabbia (LC)

Garbage
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Otep

Beyond that...eh, not much that I care for.

I don't know of many but that's because I don't seek them out. I'm not too big a fan of female singing when it comes to rock, yeah yeah yeahs are the only exception I think. Anyways, more power to them and if they wanna rock that's great but I just can't stand most female singing over rock music.

Yes, thats a girl.

If they do it properly its fine. But the typical female singer doesnt suit rock or metal.

I like how both of these threads have carefully avoided the mention of possibly the most obvious female rock band: Courtney Love's Hole.

... Sorry, did I just say a naughty thing? >_>

EDIT: Incidentally, ignoring the whole 'Courtney Love' aspect, I actually really like Hole. Yes, including her singing...

Well, I reckon there's definitely some good ones out there, although often they fall into a same-genre trap; for example, I personally think a lot of female-fronted symphonic metal bands sound similar because they take the gothic route, such as Nightwish, Sirenia, We Are the Fallen, Within Temptation and Evanescence. Not to imply those are bad though, but I do like to look for variety as well.

Firebrand Super Rock are a pretty new female fronted heavy metal, they're definitely good. The music sounds like a combination of classic metal with a Zakk Wylde-style guitarist (the influence is really strong in the solo, I feel)

More female fronted heavy metal in the form of Lita Ford, also a talented guitarist

Nota Profana are an amazing example of symphonic metal done differently than the norm, although to say they have a female singer doesn't really do justice to the band. They are an orchestra who compose sublime metal.

More insanely good symphonic metal here from Pythia - this song has the added distinction of a poetry reading by Brian Blessed at the end as part of the track.

Here's an ace power/heavy metal I discovered the other week, Triosphere

First band that popped into my head was Arch Enemy.

I was just thinking about making a similar thread. I'll have to keep an eye on this and check out the previous one.

Anyway, If you're okay with your music not being in English, I highly recommend exist trace. They are an all-female Japanese visual rock band, and Jyou has such a wonderful voice.~

Flyleaf, Fireflight. Pretty sure there's one more that's escaping me that hasn't been mentioned yet... but I drawing a blank.

Kittie, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Crucified Barbara, Lacuna Coil, Amanda Fucking Palmer to name but a few.

Oh Talena.

Tarja Terunin

It's Turunen. *Death glare of doom, hissing, and all that*

As far as Nightwish goes, the new girl isn't bad, she's still leagues better than your average female modern music star, but, uhh...Tarja left some shoes behind that Anette could never fill. It's plain impossible.

Captcha: evil genius *rubs hands, twirls mutache, snickers like Dick Dastardly*

Very, very cool person.

I've seen them 3 times, will be seeing them again in May.

After the first time I saw them(2009 I think), I saw her walking by me and said "great set". She thanked me, then asked me if I wanted a shirt and a CD. I didn't refuse, and we spent the next 45 minutes talking and enjoying the next band.

The next time I saw them, almost a year later, she recognized me and stopped to talk with me for a bit before they got on their bus. I've got pictures of us from both times.

Super cool people.

Oh hell for a real(ly shitty) blast from the past, look up Sugar Coma.

Nightwish, Rasputina, Heart, Lacuna Coil, Evanescence, Avril Lavigne.

That's just off the top of my head. I'm sure there's more on my ipod if I dredge back far enough.

Sure enough they're not as common as male vocalists. But I tend to be a sucker for female vocals in songs, especially rock/alt.

The top two that come to my mind at the moment are Bif Naked and Flyleaf.

The female voice really does suit some genres of Rock, especially the Shoegazing/Dream Pop side of things. The light vocal range style really benefits female singers in that regard.

Also, Punk to some degree too. Most of the best all-female bands are punk based. The Riot Grrrl scene being a huge feminist punk movement in the early 90's, which gave birth to bands such as Bikini Kill, L7 and Sleater-Kinney.

I do agree with you though to some extent, women with Metal (which is not Gothic) does seem kinda wrong in some respects, but there are a few rare bands that make it work like Kitty, and Halestorm.

Still I do think more female artists should branch out more like these bands, and don't stick to the tried and true female genres, like mainstream pop, R&B or soul. It's the main reason why their isn't much strong female music around, and it's becoming more about the booty and less about the music (aka the Britney Spears school of trashy throwaway shit). That's why Bands such as the incredible Warpaint for example are so precious to a guy like me. They have the looks, backed by the huge amount of talent to make their music amazing, and I find that sexy, dead sexy, even more so than any Jesse J, or Lady Gaga song would ever make me.

Well except for Paramore I can't really think of anything else than Ayreon and Avantasia, but those are mostly guest vocalists, seeing as both Ayreon and Avantasia are metal opera bands consisting of a lot of guest vocalists...
If I remembered how to embed I video I would have

Gonna see Arkona and Huntress (and Turisas and Alestorm... Paganfest!!!) this Saturday :D

I am quite surprised you could not think of at least 1. Although, funnily I can't think of another one to add the list.

Awhile ago I found a band called Era for a Moment that I quite like.

Hey, you didn't ask for good examples.

Also Avril is far... far worse than Amy.

Simone Simmons and Floor Jansen.

Here's kind of an obscure one.

That'll do for now. Might come back with some more tomorrow if I remember.

EDIT: whoa I forgot something important:

Damn, ninja'd on all but one (off the top of my head, that is).

what about nightwish? or lucina coil..female vocals at least which seems to fit that "symphonic metal" genre
